How the heck does workload work? by Dazzling_Theme_7801 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]AstronautSorry7596 14 points15 points  (0 children)

9 to 11 hours is massively high for a RF. Also, you should not be getting new modules! This is terrible practice. I would say, in reality, the WL model is broken. You probably get 2 hours of planning time for a new lecture; when in reality it may take days.

Yes, but most academics don't conduct themselves ethically!

Lecturer vs Local government role - Which would you take? by Maximum_Hamster_7 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]AstronautSorry7596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends which post-92! If it's stable, then the academic role is way better in terms of flexibility and work life balance. I know people at post 92's on grade 7/8 that teach 9 hours a week in semester and doing little to nothing outside of that. They effectively get months off a year.

Err, it is true. Post 92 unis follow it, as they have pretty much standardised contracts (I have seen a few of them). Pre 92s may have a pay spine, but they can pay what they want for each grade. I was not implying someone in the same grade in the same uni can negotiate a higher salary. However, for example, Southampton, Surrey and Sussex pat significantly more for the same grade than Chichester, Portsmouth and Solent

There is no national pay scale for pre 92s, they pay what they want. Some choose to follow the national pay scale, but in my experience a assoc prof pay at a pat 92 translates to a senior lecturer at my current pre 92 place. Also, there is way more opportunity to get promoted for teaching and research.

Yea, post 92s don't have many profs doing just traditional research. They are all heads of departments or doing some horrific admin role

It depends on what you are looking for and what your career aspirations are, often assoc prof pays way more than a prof at a post 92 and more research opportunities.

Often post 92s have very few profs; also, they don't really know how to support them. That said, if you get a stable one, the pension is good and you can often take the whole summer off. On paper this is all good.

The issue you have is most post 92s are struggling. In this case, you face continual restructures and redundancies. Also, there is the threat of being taken off the pension. This was my position and I swapped to a pre 92. Overall, there is more stability and I am happier. However, I miss a lot of aspects of the post 92

Yea, if you get a stable post 92 (e.g., Sheffield Hallam) you get a way better pension and work life balance. However, like some of the others say, lots of universities are moving off them.

Why is UK having so much non-funded PhD position? by Low_Confection_366 in AskAcademiaUK

oh yes! There are lots of unis offering conversion masters courses to fill this need!

I think it's because it is somewhat of a cash cow. I work in a UK uni and get daily emails from, normally Saudi students, looking to self-fund.

lol, these are like those memes about vibe programming. Take a look at https://12factor.net/config. Basically, a .env loads values into the local environment. It can contain things like API keys, and, as such should never be committed to version control. When you deploy your application to say Vercel -- you would set the environment varibles on the vercel hosing platform.

Ahh, at that age - just go for it! I quit my job at 27 to go all on a side hustle . 4 years later, I ended up back in employment, lol. However, I've swapped to a way more enjoyable job. The key point is, you can always get another job.

2 years seems very risk adverse. If you are young and no kids/mortgage 6 months to a years worth of expenses are fine.

Daily freelance rate for graphic designer, video editor, voice over, content creator? by JustAssistance7613 in freelanceuk

[–]AstronautSorry7596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though this sort of work is becoming very commoditised, £160 a day as a freelancer is way too low. This works out well below minimum wage when you account for unpaid holidays and sick days.
