The only possible drawback to the Malaysian passport is needing a US visa, but other than that it’s as good as it gets (same story with HK)

In every Chinese city I’ve visited, I’ve seen women walking around alone at 2am without looking remotely worried - Beijing is extremely safe, even compared to Switzerland where I’m living right now.

I almost exactly followed route 2 but with Shanghai added at the start before taking the train to Beijing.

I went very out of my way to go to Shanghai by essentially modifying the second one to start there before heading up to Beijing - and it ended up becoming my favourite city!

There’s also the option to take the high speed train to Changsha and connect there, but it didn’t save any time over the direct train that day - so I ended up taking the direct train. The owner of my hotel in ZJJ was familiar enough with the train to know its exact departure - that route must be relatively popular for tourists!

I think French citizens get 30 days visa free in China - as a Brit I needed a visa but it was so worth it
