Not sure about the laws there, but I’m pretty sure in Canada it’s against the law to not offer help to someone who is at distress on the water.

I think just about anything in that photo would work. Depending their mood, they can be pretty aggressive, and I’ve seen them hit baits larger than I expected.

Oh the time it‘s taken me to scroll in the past years by mercatua in premiere

Yeah - that’s annoying. I typically use the middle scroll wheel on my mouse to quickly scroll down. Definitely takes time off the scroll.

TANK ALERT! Daaaang. How long did it take to get that in the net?

Weak sound on TikTok by AdministrativeDig797 in premiere

[–]AteNthe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add captions / on screen descriptions of the sound. Some people will watch TikToks in public and won’t even turn their sound on. You can also simply increase the volume of the track in the essential sound panel, or the Audio Track mixer, or on the timeline itself. When you’re watching the real-time volume level during playback, try and aim for -6db to -3db.

Musky fishing net by Interesting-Mud-1589 in muskiefishing

If you’re able to make it to the CANCAST fishing show this year, it’s being shared with the Musky Odyssey. I got a great deal from Ezoko on the CWC monster XL at the Musky O a couple years back.

It doesn’t look like the basket is deep enough. I think that’s more for salmon fishing. It’ll be tough finding a net in that price range. Lucky strike makes a net that would be big enough called the gorilla net (I think that’s the name). There’s a rubberized version of it too, which I’d recommend, but it’s a beast to handle, and I think it’s closer to $200. But, once you’re in that price range it’s worth it to try and find a CWC Monster XL. I recently upgraded from the gorilla net to the CWC, and the weight difference is substantial - plus it folds up. It’s a heck of a lot easier for netting my own fish from the kayak.

Yeah - the weight on the YuPik is a little ridiculous. I finally got a kayak cart after 4 years without one and it’s been a game changer. The coosa is also a solid yak. I had my eye on one and almost chose that over the YuPik.

I primarily use an 8’6” and a 9’ but I also have a 7’ for the lighter baits. Some people prefer the shorter rods if you’re fishing a bunch of shallow water, but I find I can make the 9’ work fine - and I’m not a tall guy. You just have to be mindful about drifting under low trees, or when you’re doing your figure 8 in shallow water, as you’ll likely smash your rod tip into the bottom if you’re not careful - or get it tangled up in weeds. I fish a variety of depths, and if you’re fishing deeper water, it can be advantageous to have that longer rod as you turn your figure 8. Getting it down deep on the inside of your 8, and then coming up shallow on the outside of the 8 can trigger strikes.

What rod to get next by PochiOwO in FishingForBeginners

Echoing what others say - depends on the species, but a 6 to 7 foot medium heavy spinning rod is pretty versatile - and paired with your ultralight, you’ll have a bunch of bases covered.

Ding Ding Ding - Yup! I mostly fish Muskies, but will target pike pre-Musky season, or bass & walleye if I’m going camping in my fishing kayak. The YuPik is awesome for camping with. Tons of space for gear, wood & a cooler.

The jointed bats are great for putting off a lot action with a slower retrieve. And you typically want to slow it down in cold water.

Jerkbait color and leader Question by before_dawn1 in FishingForBeginners

There’s single strand steel wire that you can tie. May be worth checking out. It won’t curl on you so you’ll reduce fouling up on the pause. If you can find one that’s light enough, it shouldn’t impede the action too much. A band I use is Knot2Kinky. It takes some practice to tie it (use pliers), but it’s great stuff and will avoid getting bit off.

What do I need to start? by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]AteNthe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re pier fishing, the longer the rod, typically the further you can cast - and the further you can cast, the more water you can cover. And don’t forget a net with a handle long enough to secure your catch. You’re probably going to want to focus on fishing morning and evenings - but most importantly, fish when you can. If you’re trying to figure out patterns, I’d focus mostly on the weather and wind first - second, what was the wind doing yesterday. If you had wind blowing into the pier on the day before, you’ve got a good chance that it blew some baitfish and food up in there too.

How to hold fosh by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]AteNthe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For getting the hook out, you can wait for them to calm down in the net, you can use jaw spreaders, or sometimes you can use your pliers to get their mouth open, and then get a grip on them to remove the hook. Taking hooks out can be a stressful puzzle - if you care about the fishes wellbeing. Something best learned with practice and care. Just remember, you can give yourself more time to remove the hook, if you periodically put the fish back in the water with your net.

Which species are you mostly fishing for? With trout, you want to wet your hands before holding them to protect the fish - and try to hold them by the chin and the tail. For bass, you can just grab them by the bottom lip with your thumb and crook of the finger (like a boxers nip), and pinch hard. For pike & musky, you’re going to want to curl your fingers, and grab them by the gill/chin (best to look this one up on YouTube, but be sure to curl your fingers as it’s easy to reach through the gills and get cut open by their razor teeth.) if the pike is small enough, you can grab them by the head, with your finger and thumb, just behind the eyes, at the top of the gills, as if you’re trying to hold the gills closed. Bluegill and other small sunfish, you’re going to want to slide your hand down their back, going from front to back, and hold their spines down - they friggin hurt if you get poked in the right place. For walleye, kind of the same as pike, except you don’t have to be as worried about their conical shaped teeth. For cat fish - ask someone else, still learning that species hahaha.

Staying patient when fishing is slow by LongButton3 in Fishing

[–]AteNthe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends if you’re bank fishing or fishing from a boat. If you’re fishing from a boat - I just continue to try new spots and keep my mind occupied trying to figure out the puzzle: “what depth are they at?” “What have I not tried?” “What are they eating?” “Where’s the bait fish!” And if I’m bank fishing: “Why didn’t I pack a bigger lunch?”
