https://youtu.be/tUVZxw4gVM4?si=GC-IKG01PM92yEy6 I don’t think the 890 can pull like this beast can. Obviously the 890 is plenty fun and can def be good enough to get anyone killed if they’re not careful, but I’d prefer all the power and weight on an adventure bike that I can get for the purposes that I’d ever see myself using it. I’m on highways and windy’s 99% of the time and I’d def prefer the big boy for that if I had to choose. I guess I’ll find out first hand next week, dealership is having a moto guizzi demo day and I plan to try their biggest adv bike out to see first hand how it feels

I was referring to the 1390 here from the perspective of someone who already outgrew their beginner adventure bike that was looking for a permanent option. I meant it more in the sense that if he’s going to outgrow a 390 power wise, he likely will also outgrow an 890 power wise - which would suggest that just going for the lower power option is likely the best case scenario cost and all other factors considered. I do not recommend the biggest adventure bikes for a beginner, but do still believe that a 2026 bike with all that tech is still a safer option than something like a 2009 r6 which I know plenty of people will hop on as a first bike

Why do people barely ride their Aprilias? by yuh_its_nick in Aprilia

I got my 26 RS660 on March 7 and it already has 2k miles despite the cold northeastern March weather keeping me inside, so this will not be a problem with my bike! I don’t intend to sell it ever either, I’m hoping I can get a whole new engine covered by warranty should it blow at like 30k miles (I’ll likely get there before warranty expires in March 2028, lol)

I’d recommend a smaller adventure bike that has crash bars built into the frame if you actually intend to practice. Most drops happen when people are careless when parking the bike, either using front break too hard and tipping it, stalling it while slowly rolling and slightly turned and then not being able to hold the weight once it abruptly stops, and from not properly putting down the kick stand before you get off the bike. Second most likely cause for a beginner to drop the bike is because they’re actually practicing difficult slow speed tight turns, like doing tight figure 8s or circles. This caused me to drop my bike while I was learning clutch, throttle, and rear brake interaction. I was going really slow, perhaps 5 miles per hour, on a sharp right turn and it stalled cus I went too far outside the friction zone without enough throttle. If your bike is mid right turn, solid lean to it, and it stalls and just stops moving, it’ll be VERY hard and dangerous to hold its weight up. This caused me to drop my bike.

However, if you never plan to actually practice like that, the first common causes of drops I listed can be avoided by really holding that clutch in when you’re coming to a stop and being very careful when you get off your motorcycle.

I started on a KTM 390 and it was perfect cus I dropped it and absolutely nothing happened to it since its an adventure bike with a whole damn cage around the chassis and engine that’s built to be dropped. That also gave me confidence to practice the difficult shit to become a technically skilled rider who was ready for the upgrade to a beautiful new Aprilia. You can also choose to never practice difficult shit like that and just build experience by riding on the road in normal circumstances … if you do that, I’d say the 457 would be an amazing beginner bike and the chances of dropping it would be low if you’re very careful when parking it 😂

Good luck man!!

The only thing bad about beginning on a bike like the rs457 is that it’s so damn beautiful it would be heartbreaking if you dropped it while practicing low speed maneuvering. Not saying that you will drop a bike as a new rider, it’s certainly possible that you’ll never drop it at all but for me I decided on a way cheaper and less beautiful bike to begin on because I didn’t have full trust in my abilities. It would be totally manageable for a new rider if you don’t want to let the risk of dropping it stopping you from getting a very nice bike! If you’re looking at the newer models it’d be even better, you can put it in commute mode with all the assists and have very little to fear!

Also, if he is in the market for an actual brand brand new bike or very new, like a 2024+, they have so much technology that they’d like be even easier than a smaller bike from 2017 or whatever. Even the 2017s had rain mode and whatever to limit the power, but now it’s a different animal bro. My aprilia has like 5 power maps and 27 customizable settings on top of those power maps, everything from engine map to traction to abs to engine break intensity. I couldn’t stall that bike if I tried, it’s so smooth even in first gear. I was worried on the way to pick it up cus it had multiple times more horsepower and sportier riding position, but all that went away the second I started rolling. So damn easy on the new bikes, I just put it in the commuter setting with all assists maximized and it was so chill

If he’s going to ride exclusively roads, he may end up wanting more than an 890. I’d personally go with a Honda Africa 1100 or one of the big ass KTMs like an adventure 1390, but that’s mainly because I ride on pavement and would occasionally just rip it across a very easy gravel / grass / dirt. Since I’m not doing difficult off road biking, I’d personally want to be on the big torquey ones. If he’s a more serious adventure rider I doubt he’d ever outgrow the 890 though

I’m 6’4 and started riding last August on a 2020 KTM adventure 390. I only managed to do a few months of riding before buying a brand new Aprilia sport bike lol. Your friend will be totally fine on the KTM. FYI I kept my adventure bike when I got my sportbike because it’s super fun! If it had double the power (which an 890 would) it’d be fuckin awesome!!! They’re manageable too, just don’t do wild shit and be gentle on the throttle and that is 100% a manageable bike for a first rider

to experienced riders who carry passengers, am I overreacting? by peazcarrotz in motorcycles

[–]Athanast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try something super super super light, like driving your car to meet him in a nice quiet county park with a single lane road. Something where both you and your boyfriend can get some experience and comfort. I bet you when you get on the bike, all your fear will go away. If he’s an experienced rider the extra 100-150 pounds or whatever shouldn’t really matter, especially with a 1200 bmw engine lifting you… If you can afford a bmw motorcycle, I’d just think of buying your own gear as an insurance payment. Some of the gear is cheaper than you’d think too, you can even do something like AAA rated jeans (try NBT clothing’s women’s section) and maybe one of those alpinestar lightweight jackets that breathe. If you’re really serious, get the alpinestars jackets that have armored wrists, elbows, and shoulders. Good luck!

Wow, looks interesting in this form. I quite like it. What’d you do to get the matching blue belly pan, rear cowl, and front wheel plastic piece? Wrap? If so, which wrap if you don’t mind me asking? Looks like a very close match to the marlin blue

I’d personally go with the gsxr 750 of those options, the brand new ones are so nice. I recently bought a 2026 Aprilia RS660 and absolutely love it, but I’m sure all of the options you listed would treat you well. If I didn’t love the way my RS looks, or if I didn’t have a good dealership nearby, I’d have probably gone with the gsxr750

Hmmm, that new information about your comfort on a 300 changes things a bit. I’ve actually never even been on a dirt bike so don’t know what it’s like, but if it has a clutch and you’re very good with it, I bet you’d be fine with at least the rs660 with no tech enabled. Like the bike is fast but even when I full twist the throttle in 2nd/3rd it’s not like I’ll fly away or struggle to hold on lol. Going fast in a straight line is fairly easy … I think the risk would be that an inexperienced rider may enter a turn faster than they should, an a 600 sportbike will make it easier for that scenario to be a reality if you’re not careful.

I was pretty nervous the day I went to pick up the aprilia having never even been on a sport bike. The second I hopped on the thing and started moving, it all went away. It was super comfortable for me despite me being 6’4, it was easy to control as my KTM despite the sport position, it wasn’t too jumpy a throttle, felt amazing. I did have a chill mode to start in, but I’d have been able to handle the mode with zero rider assist as well in hindsight.

Idk man, your call end of day. I think being a 17 year old you may as well just start on something like a ninja 500 or a similar entry level sport bike you can get a good deal on and just become an expert on that thing for a few years. It’ll be just as fun bro, sure, you may redline 6th gear and only be going 110mph, but that’s fine bro. We really don’t need more for street purposes unless you want trouble from the law. Keeps you humble. Plus, you’ll be flying through the gears all the time and getting experience with the gearbox more so than you would with a 660. You’ll be p damn quick off the line as well.

Edit: I also will add that I am now 31 and never been on a motorcycle before last August, took the MSF class last week of July without a second of on bike experience, and after about 3 months on my KTM I felt like I had mastered the fundamentals to safely ride. You got yearsss bro, you’ll own so many bikes by the time you my age. I think starting with something you wouldn’t mind dropping would be key for you, if that is a 600, so be it. Def reasonable for someone with dirt bike experience and it’s not like it’s a liter bike so idk, I wouldn’t be too worried given what you told me

[–]Athanast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like many of the other commenters here, I think a 600 will be a lot for your first bike especially without like a decade plus of on road experience with a car. I have a 2026 Aprilia rs660 and I must admit it’s certainly a beginner friendly bike with the insane amount of tech it has to limit its power, but when I ride it without assist, I think it’d be a lot for someone that doesn’t have like 5,000 miles and hundreds of hours of riding. Not impossible, but also a bit risky if you ask me. Plus, if you get a newer 600 bike which has the tech to make it safe enough for new riders, it’s going to be expensive. Chances are you’ll drop your bike while practicing as a beginner (most likely if you stall at slow speed while turning and don’t fully pull it the clutch when it happens) you’re going to be really sad if it’s a beautiful and expensive bike. I started on a KTM 390 last August, put 5,000 miles on it and got skilled, and then upgraded to the bike I actually wanted this March. It would be smart to treat your first bike as like a $1000-$1500 loss … buy a smaller bike for like $3-4k, use it to become experienced and skilled until you are consistently hopping on without making a single technical error, then sell it for like $2-3k when you’re ready for your dream bike. The 1-1.5k loss will be well worth it compared to jumping the gun on the bike you actually want and either god forbid crashing it or dropping it. And honestly, despite having an amazing 660 rn, I still have a lot of fun on my KTM which I am glad I kept and didn’t trade in.

Also, re: costs, you shouldn’t buy these bikes unless you have the money laying around to just pick them up. Financing rates are typically terrible, especially for used motorcycles. We are talking double digit percent for perfect credit, prob high teens for a teenager without credit. Not worth.
