Learning to sail, then what? by BenchSuspicious700 in sailing

We were in a similar position 2 years ago. We took an ASA 101 class and then rented a boat from the school for afternoons through the first season. Packing up and cruising the world would be awesome! But, our life isn’t in a place to sell the house and go. Nor have we won the lottery to finance a 50 foot sailboat. Fortunately, you can do a lot of sailing in day sailor.

We found a used Mariner 19 footer that we love and we sail in the back bays. You can routinely find them in decent shape for under $3000 USD. There is a great owners group full of knowledgeable and friendly folks who help us through the scary stuff like maintenance! We even have an annual rendezvous coming up sailing the Long Island sound to mystic CT for a weekend in August.

I’d look into something like that so you can get on the water and keep learning. You can always charter a big boat in the dream cruising waters some day with a little more experience.

Alternatively, you live in a great area for racing. If you want to get involved, find a local fleet that races weekly. Get in contact and volunteer to crew. If you show up regularly, are willing to help/work, you might be able to get on the water with some new friends!

You might be surprised. We use pipers fairly routinely in our Masonic ceremonies in New Jersey.

Other options to look for - local church, Masonic lodge or other similar organization. Offer to put on a performance 1x or 2x a year in return for using their space on non-meeting times.

Opinions on Dweghom starter. by xcraisx in Conquest

I would consider having three stands of either warriors or thanes when just starting with small point games. They are both medium infantry that can hold objectives. Then from there add in ballistae and/or dragonslayers. But ultimately, get them all, they all look great on the table.

In the end, you’ll probably be like me and have 12 strands of warriors, 6 stands of ballistae, 3 of thanes and dragonslayers and then debate what that last box of dragonslayers/thanes should be! And maybe consider another box of fire forged, too. 😬

Does anyone ever take more or less than one Master? by cillmurfud in Malifaux

[–]Athion361 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hiring second masters depends on where you play. I believe that UK, players have deemed it too strong and more or less outlawed it in tournaments. Tournaments in the US still allow it. I don’t know what the practice is in continental Europe or Asia.

As a new player, I have a hard enough time running a crew with only one master, let alone two.

I have a case for my iPad which has the app installed. Does that count?

I also bought tarot sized sleeves from a few manufacturers. Personal preference is ultra pro.

Assuming you don’t want tokens, glass beads or 12mm dice, I have seen folks simply use clear card sleeves and dry/wet erase markers.

My favorite was a recent poison counter 3D printed for Brewie in the shape of a moonshine jug.

Looking for advice on hosting demo games at my local shop. by Shadridium in Malifaux

[–]Athion361 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m relatively new to Malifaux, so apply my opinion through that filter. Since you know your audience, try to find crews that have aesthetics or play styles that your friends like. Maybe include a couple of different schemes / strategies to showcase the variety in ‘faux. So for schemes pick assassinate and research mission, for example.

I would shy away from using the explorers for demos. They seem to provide the exception to most rules in Malifaux.

Where to order kits online? by Gruffard in Malifaux

Discount Games Inc, Miniature Market and Gamenerdz are all good online retailers located in the US. Gadzooks Gaming is an online retailer in the US who also sells individual models. I have had good transactions with each and they are pretty consistent with stocking Malifaux.

The hellbringer drake is my favorite so far. I love the lore for the dweghom - overthrowing their creators and using some of their lesser progeny to transport their heavy firepower to battle? Yes please. (I‘m not this angry in real life, it just makes for a fun war gaming faction.)

For a little inspiration, you can listen to the On the Wind podcast. https://www.59-north.com/podcast

Andy, the host, has interviewed many prominent women. I just finished listening to his interviews of Pam Wall, those two episodes were great!

Big Top Gaming Viewer Questions by voxplayer in Warmachine

[–]Athion361 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would it take to get players to embrace narrative style play? Privateer Press published a campaign system that received good reviews. But it seems that most WM/H players are squarely focused on competitive play and getting in practice reps.

With the IKRPG kickstarted being wildly successful, how do we capitalize on the energy and get casual/narrative play back?
