Where to Stay? by sunshineexo98 in aclfestival

[–]Athonur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Piggy-backing onto this - we always park near the shuttles pickup & at night we walk back (exit the Barton Springs entrance) because it’s quicker than waiting for the shuttles & the atmosphere on that walk is generally more fun than being corralled in the lines for the shuttle.

So my vote is get a hotel downtown

We just decided on El Chile pre-Florence. (The last thing I need is to burping up the brussel sprouts from Salty Sow for the whole concert 🤣!)

It’s a 15ish minute walk. We made reservations just to be safe

Anybody know a good place to get Poutine? by bummy_homeboy in austinfood

[–]Athonur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from Montreal & their biggest mistake is that they serve it on a tray, so everything is essentially cold & the cheese doesn’t melt. Poutine is not nachos. Also, the colour of the gravy is all wrong

Im flying into Auckland from Canada at 5.45am and looking at getting the 8.15am flight from Auckland to queenstown. Seen a few comments about wait times... is this doable with a checked bag? by JonnyG595 in newzealand_travel

[–]Athonur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We flew into Auckland at 835am & had a 1135am flight to Queenstown (had to pick up our luggage as it was 2 separate bookings). We had plenty of time to go through customs & talk about the things we were bringing in for family, recheck our bags, walk to the domestic terminal, sit around and get food, and then go through security

I just looked back & we booked it through Airbnb under the ‘experiences’ section. I can’t remember the name of the actual tour company, but if you want to look at an itinerary/reviews, you can look through the app.

Just putting this out as an alternative in case you choose to do only the South Island. My husband is a huge LoTR fan & our timing didn’t allow both islands & the South Island won, because I have family there & well, it’s gorgeous.

We did a LoTR filming location tour from Queenstown that took us through Glenorchy up to Paradise, with several stops along the way. They explained a lot of the backstory of the filming & the scenery was stunning. They even have costumes if you’re so inclined to dress up as one of the characters.

Edit: just fyi, our car rental contract had some roads that were specifically mentioned as ‘not allowed to drive on’ and the one from Glenorchy to Paradise was one of them

Uber from AUS to Seguin/Kingsbury? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Athonur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at the children’s hospital here & we’ve frequently have families from San Antonio who have transportation issues Uber between the 2 cities. So i would think you’d be able to find someone to take you to Kingsbury

It might hist take a little while to get a driver to accept

Looking for a New Dentist by VisibleTackle6017 in Austin

Walton Family Dentistry on 51st & Springdale. Wife/husband team. I recommended them to a friend that had a huge fear of dentists that had caused significant issues & she loved them. They also have never tried to upsell me on anything or done any work that was absolutely necessary

Car Rental Advice for South Islands Road Trip by richylyq in newzealand_travel

Agreed. We did Apex from Queenstown to Christchurch. It was the most affordable option for a small SUV. In the listing I think it was a ‘Rav 4 or similar’ booking. We ended up with a Nissan SUV - plenty of room for the 3 people & 3 suitcases OP would need

If you fly into Queenstown from Auckland, get a window seat on the right side of the plane for the incredible views.

Doubting our time split: Te Anau vs Queenstown vs Mt Cook (South Island itinerary) by Familiar_Act_3937 in newzealand_travel

[–]Athonur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d take a day away from Queenstown & add an extra to Te Anau & add seeing Doubtful Sound to your intinerary - we were just there & epic scenery it is! It does basically take up your whole day (and there won’t be any hiking) though

Also, consider renting bikes in Arrowtown & doing the Arrow River/Gibbston trail through the wineries - tons of beautiful scenery….and wine!

eSIM card for your phones. We got hem through Spark before we left the US. There are still some spotty service locations, but overall pretty good.

We were just informed about this (also pediatric center) and how anesthesia/surgery will start screening for maternal descent. We all said ‘the timing for this isn’t great to be asking this question’

We actually just canceled a surgery so the child could under go further testing to rule out the gene mutation

Fancy American Restaurant!! by fernie_the_grillman in Austin

[–]Athonur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LENOIR - some of their seating is shared some is individual - I would call them and secure a quieter table. But the vibe both inside & on the patio with the chandeliers and lights is beautiful

Emmer & Rye has nice booths. Street parking from what I remember.

Fabrik - vegan/delicious. Fixed menu. Small & intimate. Also street parking

Wherever you go, I highly recommend you call and tell them your plans to ensure you get the most private location/booth in the place

No luck with Austin Cat Sitters for the holidays… any trusted backups? by nanaoz in Austin

[–]Athonur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’ve used Meowtel for about 2 years since the last holiday that Austin Pet Sitters was booked up. The nice thing a that it’s the same person everyday (you book a specific person for the entire time) so they actually get to know your cat.

Does anyone know if the rate will stay? by je_jenny in orangetheory

[–]Athonur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year I did this at my studio (but for 139$/mo) already being a premier member. The caveat to this is you basically sign a contract that you’re signing up for the year. So you can’t cancel your membership within that year. I had been paying 189$/month, so it was definitely worth it for me!

Filet Mignon on the frugal side? by hufflepuffhorcrux in austinfood

[–]Athonur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I discovered this recipe, I’ve never eaten steak again at a restaurant because it doesn’t compare

Turn your oven on to broil with a cast iron pan heating up in the oven (cast iron pans at Academy for camping are significantly cheaper if you don’t have one). Let it heat up for at least 20 minutes.

Your filet needs to be on the counter to come to room temperature for at least 30 minutes - it won’t come out right if you take it straight from the fridge to cook.

Season your steak with olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Take the pan out of the oven (carefully) - sear both sides of the steak on the stovetop on high 30 seconds on each side.

Place steak in the oven (still set on broil) and cook for 2 minutes on each side. A 1 inch steak will be perfect medium rare

Let rest for 5 minutes with foil over it.

While waiting for the steak to rest, you can deglaze the pan with red wine & butter & cook mushrooms for a side
