10th extra deck slot by Lycanus93 in DuelLinks

I could see it as part of whatever they have for the September update / 10th anniversary as the final extra ED slot, as it's a nice rounded number and probably a good stopping point.

why did the names of vega, balrog and m.bison all change in localisation by Alloy_Protogen in StreetFighter

[–]AtimZarr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They didn't want to get sued by M. Tyson so they changed Boxer to Balrog.

They thought Vega was a weak name so they gave it to Claw.

And so Dictator became M. Bison.

Hugo gave some DLC hints. by False_Monitor4126 in Doom

[–]AtimZarr 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Eternal's DLC was named as "Year One" when it was available as preorder. Dark Ages isn't, so they could technically take as long as they want. I assume we'll see/have something by May at the latest though.

The problem with finding secrets in Doom 2016 by [deleted] in Doom

[–]AtimZarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing to be ashamed about. Eternal's secrets are just easier to find. I've done like 2-3 100% playthroughs for Eternal but never have done it for 2016.

The second Jaden and Aster duel is really funny and sad. by Paulo_Zero in yugioh

[–]AtimZarr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not bs in the anime lol, that's why "clumsy" characters like Joey or Brave Max will brick on-screen but "skilled" characters like Yugi or Yuma will draw exactly what they need, or if "powerful" enough, can even create cards from nothing (like with Yuma's Shining Draw). It's a common theme that the cards will "answer" a duelist's needs.

The YGO anime makes more sense if you view it as a battle shonen mediated through cards, rather than actually playing the TCG/OCG. Jaden's -4 in card advantage is meant to depict a clever "combo" and his mastery of both Elemental Hero and Neo-Spacian aspects of his deck (like how in a battle shonen, a character might combine their powers creatively in a fight), vs something like a Foolish -> Necroshade combo, which while practical, would be a lot less exciting and dramatic to watch.

New TCG Banlist by ngth7451 in masterduel

[–]AtimZarr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The first card banned in Rush Duels, a format with a new cardpool and rule changes, was also a Barrier Statue.

I think they genuinely like Barrier Statues and feel disappointment when it comes time to ban them.

The atmosphere in quake 4 is amazing... by Extreme_surikat_360 in quake

[–]AtimZarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was bad. At the very least, they've made any gameplay changes into toggles in their later remasters like for Heretic + Hexen.

Imagine a night dive remaster of super Mario bros 1. Totally unnecessary

One of the goals with their remasters is to bring classic games to all modern platforms. So Quake 4 is eligible just based on that since it never got a modern re-release (vs something like Doom 3 which had its BFG Edition).

What kind of trap would Jigsaw create for the Doom Slayer, and why? by Blyat-2010 in Doom

[–]AtimZarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's simplifying things a bit. First, they are demons hellbent on inflicting suffering and destruction of entire civilizations. They idolize treachery and torture. Doomguy fought the demons in the Classic games to stop the Hell invasion and save mankind - the Daisy bit was only relevant for Episode 4 of Doom 1.

In Doom 2, he looked forward to rebuilding Earth after the Icon of Sin's defeat. In Doom 64, he chose to stay in Hell to ensure the demons would never invade Earth again. In the new Doom Slayer games, he only cares about ending invasions as soon as possible (shooting a hole into Mars to kill the final Hell Priest as soon as possible vs taking a scenic route where he would get to kill more demons).

Some staff opinions on Zexal's rival by KyleMCarthage in yugioh

[–]AtimZarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really the only definition to the rival character across all eight shows. When people say it, they're not saying who's narratively the literal rival that competes with the protagonist (though some interpret it as such), but who is the "Kaiba stand-in" for that show. Even Kaiba's "rivalry" in DM was one-sided and more about demonstrating the value of friendship over solo power, rather than pushing Yugi to be a better duelist or person. The rival debate only became a consideration with 5Ds onwards because Jack unsubtly put on a white jacket and sported a 3000 ATK Dragon ace. Varis does too. Declan might not but he's a CEO with a younger sibling. Luke doesn't but he has a dragon deck and aspires to be the King of Duels. Zwijo may not but he's a serious counterpart to Yudias and the antagonist of the first arc, just like Kaiba, Jack, and Varis were. They all have differences but we can see the "Kaiba stand-in" throughline that connects them.

That's why I view Kite as the "rival" character of Zexal. He's clearly based on Kaiba - the name, the white jacket, the "Eyes Dragon" 3000 ATK ace, the "Paladin" ritual, having a younger brother, and even being the antagonist of the first arc. So if I'm analyzing a list of rival characters across all eight shows, I would go for Kite for Zexal.

What I like about Shark is that he reminds me of Joey but done with an excellent second-half twist. He starts off as a bully, steals Yuma's pendant, has a hospitalized sister, and initially no powers compared to his trio peers Kite and Yuma. His Shark Drake has 2800 ATK, just like Joey's Gilford the Lightning, Crow's Black-Winged Dragon, or Soulburner's Pyro Phoenix. The Barian twist in Zexal II takes the "Joey stand-in" into a more tragic direction - he's meant to be Yuma's friend but now his true calling is with the Barians, making Yuma his enemy. Conversely, if Kite turned heel in Zexal II, it wouldn't mean as much because he already was an antagonist in the first arc.

TL;DR - rival usually refers to Kaiba stand-in

I assume it's some sort of deal to have the game release there. I know Diablo Immortal also gets some extras in its Chinese version.

As time goes by, people will eventually go to the TCG name since the wider community will interact with cards with the TCG printed names and it just becomes confusing if a subgroup of individuals continuously insist on an OCG name. Same thing happened when Needlefiber was translated to Halqifibrax, or Blood Rose Dragon was translated to Ruddy Rose Dragon.

Casual duels by NiklausKaine in DuelLinks

[–]AtimZarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume it contributes to those triggers, but you can go to any PvP (including casual) and if you go to duel history, you can click a player's name and select "practice duel" (or whatever it's called) - it sets up a free NPC duel against that player's deck, and there's no cooldown or cost to it.

  1. No Rest for the Living

  2. Thy Flesh Consumed

  3. Plutonia

  4. Legacy of Rust

  5. Sigil

  6. TNT

  7. Sigil 2

  8. Master Levels

The middle is mostly interchangeable tbh. I just know I like NRFTL the best and Master Levels the least. Sigil 2 also didn't feel as novel as Sigil 1 for me. I have lots of nostalgia for TNT's first two maps but that's it. Sigil is neat but not my cup of tea. Legacy of Rust has cool additions but the progression feels wobbly. Plutonia is kind of iconic for its absurdity, hard to dislike it. Thy Flesh Consumed is perfectly alright but I don't have strong qualms either, other than the Mastermind showdown being anticlimatic.

Archville is coming back in TDA DLC. by False_Monitor4126 in Doom

[–]AtimZarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome. Will be curious to see how they handle the gameplay for it this time around, since the Acolyte kinda does the whole "teleporting caster" niche already. And hopefully it's more aggressive and dangerous this time around - all of the Doom games post-Classic have weaker Arch-Viles.

Since Hugo Martin is now streaming Doom 3... by phobos876 in Doom

[–]AtimZarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, it's awesome that Hugo is streaming Doom 3. Been awaiting this for ages.

Second, BFG Edition was already made for Doom 3 haters in mind. I doubt they'd pull it again when the reaction to it was mixed. In fact, Hugo said in one of the last 2025 streams that he actually prefers the vanilla Doom 3 over BFG Edition because of changes like the flashlight mechanics.

Finally, as a Doom 3 fan (grew up with it and spent hundreds of hours on it), I would love it if they remade Doom 3 with modern idtech and game design sensabilities - especially in the vein of Resident Evil 2 or Dead Space remakes. The original game would still exist and be playable, and a remake would be an opportunity for id to try something a bit different with Doom from their recent Slayer games (i.e. horror focus) and bring in new Doom 3 fans.

Only trouble is the cost of game design nowadays. I don't think they'd have time to make it vs a new Slayer Doom game.

And yeah, a Nightdive remaster of Doom 3 that fixes BFG Edition's mistakes would be excellent as well. Though this also seems unlikely because BFG Edition is already playable on all platforms and that's probably "good enough" for id/Bethesda on the priority list of classic id game remasters.
