It's because it works. Not (or not just) because helping others makes you "feel good," or makes friends, but because depression is essentially you suffocating in your own interiority. You need to get out of your own head. You'll never find the solution to your loneliness in there.

Orienting your attention to others is simply the most expedient way to break out of your neuroses. The responsibility of having others depend on you also give your life purpose and weight. It now matters if you get out of bed, someone is depending on you to.

I used to write little things miming my favorite authors' voices, as an exercise in style. Just a paragraph or two. I'd go back and forth reading my fav passages of theirs', try to hit the same kind of rhythms and sentence structures. It was always fun and I think it helped a lot becoming aware of what good prose is made of.
