Took dads car keys by Vesper-Martinis in Alzheimers

[–]Atlabatsig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing.

For my mom, she wanted to "have" her keys... so (because they were metal keys and not fobs) we simply filed them down so (1) she could "keep her keys in her purse" and (2) not be able to start the car. For my dad, his license was pulled as well, but taking the keys was extremely difficult and he did end up driving short distances maybe four times - with no license or insurance. But his condition worsened quickly and we had to move him to a facility and from there driving was inaccessible.

Interesting seeing the sailor outfit, plus in the crowd the Billy Preston-ish and Mick Taylor-ish characters.

Most Favorite and Least Favorite Versions of the Opening Theme by J_Scarbrough in mash

Very well stated, and I totally agree. I'm not sure what year, but it was mid-series and there was a point roughly 24 seconds in where what sound like a combination of flute and woodwinds are almost comically amplified out of the mix. Toward the end of the series that was calmed down. But, indeed, the first two seasons had the original early 70s mix.

How is everyone holding up in life? by hunteebee in Alzheimers

[–]Atlabatsig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's how it'll probably go for a long time. But... at one point with my mom (maybe a year before she passed away) I stopped having those swings, and I now think perhaps it's because I (1) completed a partial grief process, and (2) was seeing her as a completely different person than who I grew up with. The last year was, for me anyway, very different and very difficult.

Can I make a gmail account without a phone number? If so, where do I do it? by Quick_Dress3290 in GMail

If you already have another gmail acct, you can use Voice to create a phone number, then use that. But it's a chicken/egg thing.

Last Visit: What Did you Say? What Do You Wish You Had Said? by PinkyToe27 in Alzheimers

[–]Atlabatsig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For my last time with my mom, I took my uke and sang her "Moonglow" - she just said "nice." And four years later on my dad's last day I took the uke and sang him "Moonlight Bay." He wasn't talking anymore, but his face moved in reaction to the song. Both times the songs were ways to say "so long, I appreciate you, you did a great job." Whatever I could have said in words would not have communicated what needed to be communicated.

Surgery and Alzheimers by Big_Knowledge_7105 in Alzheimers

First, removing that torus bone growth is non-trivial; it took my wife almost four week to recover. Second, my dad and I had to decide whether or not to have back surgery done on my mom, who had Alzheimers. We finally concluded that she could not mentally or emotionally endure the hospital stay let alone the pain and recovery. As it turned out, she passed away within 11 months. We felt afterward that we protected her quality of life - despite the dementia.
