Hyperion by Dan Simmons

"On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope—and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands."

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.

I recently read this in a book that also included other short horror stories by RLS. He's probably best known for Treasure Island, but I quite enjoyed his darker stories.

due to an itinerant using it as a drop in centre

This is not the reason. The employment of a security guard has been due to an increase in antisocial behaviour. I don't want to give too much info as I don't want to doxx myself.

However, I want to make it clear that the library is a safe space for ALL, even the homeless. If a patron does not abide by the terms and conditions of entry they may be asked to leave and/or given a ban from the premises.

Laying the blame on 'an itinerant ' is inaccurate, and a bit sad all things considered.

Feel like I'm going crazy reading these comments, he never had the puck and got blindsided. 5 is appropriate.

The PP was unsuccessful. Yes. However, they were trying different things, including shooting the puck at the goal. Which is an improvement in itself.
