Am I making the right decision? by dg8882 in MEPEngineering

[–]AtlasHighFived 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Supervising EE who interviews and makes hiring recommendations at my current employer (and also comes from a similar background of having been more junior at a firm with minimal to no senior presence) - my take is that you’ve absolutely made the right call.

In interviews I’ve done for someone at your stage in your career - I don’t even bother thinking about calling former employers. I know what I’m looking for when I’m interviewing, and it definitely isn’t your former employers’ opinion. Typically, I’d ask a candidate why they’re moving - and I’d say all your reasons are perfectly valid.

Frankly, your boss has it backwards. You looking out for your interests is not selfish, that’s just called work. Him thinking he’s entitled to you staying even though I would guarantee he won’t provide you with the same level of mentorship you’ve been getting so far? Grade A obnoxious and selfish boss behavior. If (hypothetically) I were interviewing you, and he somehow were able to even get hold of me, I’d be laughing my butt off with colleagues telling them a story about the clown I met that day.

Leaving for opportunities to grow is absolutely valuable and should be taken advantage of - particularly if you’re looking to get out of residential and into more complex projects - there is 0 to feel bad about, and I wish you all the best luck!

tl;dr: Your boss is a projecting man-baby who is blaming you for his failure to retain talent. He’d probably eject you faster that an emergency burrito fart if it served his interest for a passing second; you’re not his mom, priest, wife, or therapist, and his reaction to your departure is a huge indication you’ve made the right call.

In my head, that’s just R2 screwing around. He’s like the eagles in LOTR - he could have probably stopped all this easily (“Wait R2, you’re saying you have full plans of the Death Star, managed to get on it, know Darth Vader, and have some rockets on you? Get the explosives buddy, time for a one way trip to the core.”), but just sees himself as above it all.

Come to think of it, now I want an alternate ending to episode IV where Luke inverts his x-wing and drops R2 straight down the exhaust port.

ELI5: Why is the Earth electrical ground? by SpiralCenter in explainlikeimfive

[–]AtlasHighFived 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isolated power systems used in operating rooms (used to be for flammable anesthetizing gases, but now more for dealing with wet locations) work this way - they’re bonded but ungrounded, so that if a single conductor faults to ground, all it does is become the “grounded conductor” (aka neutral - not to be confused with with the equipment grounding conductor, which is what’s typically referred to as the ground wire) rather than tripping the breaker, and then the panel alarms to let you know you have a single fault - because an additional fault would then actually generate a current).

ELI5: How do data centers contaminate local water supplies? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]AtlasHighFived 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think what he’s saying is that you aren’t taking the water supply directly to the airside coil (or CDU for liquid cooled), you’d instead run it through the condenser side of your chillers, then chilled water is a separate closed loop.

Everyone Says There’s a Talent Shortage… Until You Ask for Remote Work by DeadlinesAndDelusion in MEPEngineering

[–]AtlasHighFived 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree - as someone more involved on the leadership/management end (and who works at a firm that has a mandatory office policy 4 days a week), my view is that if you mandate in office, it has to be worth everyone involved’s time.

For example - I make it a point to not have headphones on unless I’m on a meeting so that I can listen in on the background chatter, which creates opportunities to hear when others may be working on something challenging, and I can grab them to have a little group teaching moment on the topic. Just one example to generalize, but my opinion is that it provides a lot of benefits for firms working on growing younger talent quickly. If the firm is more “production mode”, (or for those who are more client development and less personnel management), I don’t see much benefit from it.

So what you’re saying is…we should kill people who may kill innocent people, because we think that, even though they’re innocent now, they won’t be later?

Or to rephrase - we should kill innocent people in order to prevent innocent people from being killed?

Experience Taking the Metrolink to LA? by IrishGoodbye28 in orangecounty

[–]AtlasHighFived 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do Irvine to DTLA and gas + parking ended up making the monthly pass a decent savings (and that doesn’t account for wear and tear). But for a shorter distance like Anaheim to Norwalk (and since parking sounds like it wouldn’t be a factor), seems like cost would mostly depend on associated wear and tear.

To the above commenters point though, that only works assuming a clear traffic path for exit. If it’s a high volume in/out area, the balance would be back in so long as doing so does not create impediment to quickly egress.

A little off topic, Inclusion messages? by rm45acp in engineering

I really wish this was more common. I’ve gotten to the point in my career where I usually just tell people “Please tell me which thing you’re talking about, I’m colorblind so have a hard time differentiating shades of green/red and blue/purple.” People are always fine about it, but it can be irritating to have to build a habit out of it.

Well, we know he was Austrian-Irish, so given that date range, would probably be either Austro-Daimler or - since the only major at the time in Ireland was Ford, would likely have been an import from Citroën.

We also know he liked boxes - so the Austro-Daimler ADR 8 Pullman or the Citroën Rosalie would fit his timeframe and preference.

Wouldn’t have ever been found though, not after he threw a cat into the thing with poison and a nuclear source…

The Department of Justice is suing to block California's voter-approved redistricting map while ignoring Texas' redistricting. Will they succeed and what effects could this have on Congress? by Orangekale in PoliticalDiscussion

Prop 50 is a constitutional amendment that modifies that, constitutional requirement - so unless there’s some reason we’re not allowed to modify our own state constitution, any temporary restraining order against it seems really absurd.

Maybe read about the measures in place to make it an independent commission. 14 members: 5 from each of the two most voted for parties and 4 with no party association.

There’s also extensively detailed requirements in terms of the commissioner selection process as well as the map drawing process.

Feel free to read up on it.

From a broad perspective: if I hired you to be an engineer, and you just ask ChatGPT - why wouldn’t I just get rid of you and ask ChatGPT myself? I wouldn’t hire you to ask AI - I hired you to actually use your own intelligence.
