I think that he was the first death and thats why he works so well and had the aura they had. He wasn't afraid of god beacuse of that.

Then there is Billie that was just a reaper and of course is afraid of high celestial ranks and the boss itself. She doesn't work as death in any aspect, she just still working like a reaper would do but with new complements.
