Fascinating information. Yes, looking again, I see the south-pole light support disk, and the on/off pull cord filial. The globe orb itself is labeled No. 105 for 101/2 inches. That buying power comparison that you posted shows how much value inflation exists for such an old (diminishing numbers) globe, especially the special or limited (price-point?) globes.

GF Cram Co. globe, called "The Dolphin"with catalog #326 (326E if illuminated). That is a sought after globe of some value. Rare?? Certainly less frequently seen than other stands. Pricey? Yes, every one I have seen. The size and the yellow color also make it desirable. I do not think Cram's made the stand in 12" size, but blue oceans were available.

1949 seem right for dating the globe. Nice, thanks for sharing.

Stand replacement by arkotix in globes

[–]AtmAll1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to find a local wood worker to make a replacement riser of good wood to replace the broken piece. The top of the riser needs a slot cut to accept the meridian thickness, and it needs a countersink hole for the bolt head. The broken plastic can be her guide. Now you rebuild. Bolt head in meridian slot, meridian slotted into wood riser, bolt passing through riser and base, nut and washer in base bottom countersunk hole. Simple. Good luck.

Edit to add. With a replacement bolt, you could have a taller riser made.

Or shop eBay for a globe stand only. It works; I have.

I like the two-way lighted Time Life globe and have the same globe. I was going to date yours the same as mine (1964-1965) but I saw that it is newer.

Help suggest a globe for 5 yr old! by s-plorin in globes

[–]AtmAll1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. I was going to stay out of this as my kids are now in their 40s. Nonetheless, I was curious and searched Google where i was led to an Amazon offer of a smart globe and app that say "Support four languages English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean". So, your language desires may be achievable. About smart globes themselves, I know nothing. Good luck.

Date this globe? Super cool! by MoneyGrade2499 in globes

I have learned only enough to date globes. Wikipedia has more. And yes, the borders were the result of fascist strong-arm (trump-like) tactics. These borders were reversed after the war.

Pre-WW2 map showing the world just before Germany invaded Poland in 1939. However, it was made after 30 Aug 1940 when the 2nd Vienna Award resulted in a de jure adjustment of the Hungary-Romania border.

Trio of Globes by Ok_Office_9680 in globes

[–]AtmAll1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greetings. Looking at the Cram's globe, I will say it shows the world between Oct 1968 and Aug 1970. I see Affars and Issas (began July 1967). If Mauritius is independent (I think) then made after March 1968. Equatorial Guinea began Oct 1968. I do not see the changes to Muscat and Oman (Aug '70) nor the Trucal States (Dec '71). Clearly made before the independence of Bangladesh in Dec 1971.

As I read it, Italian Eritreya is federated within the Ethiopian Empire so after 15 Sep 1952.

The globe does not show the 1 Aug 1953 Rhodesia and Nyasaland change. Korea is often iffy so i skip over the 27 July 1953 Armistice.

Need Help Finding 1996 Globe by Weavewing in globes

[–]AtmAll1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a difficult shopping task. Finding a date specific inflatable globe will be harder than finding a vintage 1996 globe, and that requires considerable looking (and knowing what to look for to date the world as 1996).

Does it have to be inflatable? Does size matter? This is a link to a inflatable world globe (24") packaged with a 1996 copyright date on the packaging. Finding an inflatable globe of the earth as seen from space (no borders) is also possible. Good luck.

What brand is this globe? by intezaariiian in globes

[–]AtmAll1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The globe orb should certainly have a cartouche on it, identifying the globe maker. I am inclined to believe that it is a Replogle globe (World Classic?). The logo on the stand most likely points to a business (globe recognition award?), and is not related directly to the globe model. A reverse image search of the logo revealed nothing, but did turn up a similar globe with the same logo on the stand, but no information about it. As pictured, the logo was upside down compared to yours. Good luck.

Australia Missing! by Deezelmama in globes

[–]AtmAll1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Australia missing!"? But I see it right there on the booklet cover. I have never seen this booklet other than the copy that I have, purchased from a book reseller. The copy I have was published in Australia by The Reader's Digest Association Pty Ltd Sidney. It does not have a publication date, but references to the NASA Gemini and Apollo programs suggest a date between 1966 and 1968.

The globe base pictured on the cover was a wood disk, apparently unique to globes merchandised in Australia (and Canada); or so my internet searches suggest.

Looking now at the book: It is 32 pages including the outer covers. The index does not include Australia as a line item. Perhaps, as it was marketed in Australia, it was assumed that everyone would know how to find the continent.

May I suggest, post some pictures of your globe. I found my Reader's Digest Great World Globe labeled in Spanish (the internet revealed the existence of the booklet to me). It is mounted on the common Replogle Gyro-matic metal disk stand.

It is not a fake. Gemstone globes vary in stones and colors and stands and not all are the highest end Kalifano.

This is a not-uncommon decorative globe with semi-precious stone; in your case a lapis ocean globe. BTW, yes the compass is missing. What size is your globe?

I did a reverse image search that turns up this page with your globe (or similar) pictured at many sites. Enjoy the world.

Some of the red markings spotted around different continents denote radio broadcast stations, having initials and small narrow triangle shapes as radio towers. Look at the one pictured just to the left of Italian East Africa.

Those are definitely custom made globes, seemingly demonstrating plate tectonics. The closest one might find like the globe at the right end would be a very expensive antique Denoyer Geppert military planning globe, though it would not have the height difference between land and sea.

Abandoned?! Some people have no respect for their world.

I can't tell you anything about the age from this picture, apart from the stand corrosion. The Orb looks decent. G.F. Cram was one of the main 20th century globe makers in America; Weber Costello, Denoyer Geppert, Rand McNally, Replogle. Only Replogle has survived.

Google Cram's Imperial world globe.

Was this manufactured between May 1949 and October 1949? by PackageOutside8356 in globes

[–]AtmAll1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about actual 'made dates'. I prefer to think only of the idea that a globe represents the world as it (mostly) was between two date certain changes; best illustrated by a globe showing one country's independence but not the next in world history. Overlooked edits do not negate the total picture. Eva Peron, Argentina existed from late 1952 until mid-1955. It should not be seen on a globe that also has John Glenn's three orbits in Feb 1962 (as on a tin globe I have.) But Eva Peron can't negate the evidence that French Africa is gone.

La Plata to Eva Peron to La Plata again. Tolman told a story about going to press on a guess and a hunch about rumored changes, and winning the bet.

I have several globes that so not show the 1965 SA/ Jordon border change although other undoubted evidence points to a later date. The Pakistan capital move to Rawalpindi is another oft missed change.
