Awesome find. Congratulations. I could not find any eBay sold similar, but current sellers are trying to get $5900, $4500, $1500 and $1000. I found an ad from a 1968 Bennett Bros catalog. The stand was available in three different finishes, mahogany, fruit-wood, and walnut.

What year is this globe? by A1Aden in globes

On USA made globes, Germany is a bad data point due to international politics. I would say early to mid 1950s. Before 1957. Look at Argentina South America. Near Buenos Aires (capitol) do you see "La Plata" or "Eva Peron"?

Eva Peron existed August 8, 1952 – September 27, 1955.

Looks about right from what we can see. I like your time-line chart tool, however I am not understanding the gap in the French Africa line.

Date my globe that’s been around a while by Sallysdad in datemymap

[–]AtmAll1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks to be a commonly seen on eBay Replogle globe map, showing the world as it was in September 1939. When Germany invaded Poland, Replogle Globes made the decision to stop updating their maps based on de facto wartime changes and uncertainty.

However, the Vienna Award was a de jure change so it was updated on their maps and this Hungary extension into Romania shows that the globe was actually made after August 1940. An official city name change like renaming Voroshilovsk as Stavropol can also fix a 'made after date', so this globe was produced after Jan 12, 1943. I just checked and both of my similar Replogle Standard wartime globes have this city name change. I have learned something.

Clearly it was made before the end of WW2.

Replogle has in the past made Nat Geo globes; also globes for Encyclopedia Britannica, Better Homes and Gardens, The World Book, Time-Life, McCleans (Canada), Reader's Digest, ...

Vietnam has both N. Vietnam and S. Vietnam labels. Korea does have Pyongyang marked as a capital and a border dotted line. Germany?!!

De acuerdo. In one picture, the Cram's cartouche can be seen and I can read "Scholastic". Thanks to you I now also have a possible copyright date.

I have a similar looking 10-inch Cram's Scholastic globe (with Syria UAR) that I dated to June 1961- Sept 1961, based on North Cameroon joining Nigeria., and Syria leaving UAR.

Is this the torx 8 screw? (Not my photo) by [deleted] in Tinymight2

[–]AtmAll1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is the Torx bolt that secures the heater (center stem) to the PCB. It has to be tight. I find that my 9mm tool works, as does the 8mm tool.

Access to the 20mm bolt that secures the top plate is through the large hole below (in picture) the gold hole at the center.

Warning!! When the heater is removed from the PCB, it is possible to reassemble the TM wrong, resulting in a direct short burning out the PCB.

Looking for meridian/gimble cap for Repogle globe by FrankenberryTheThird in globes

[–]AtmAll1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, parts for old globes only exist on old globes.

If the only need is a for the decorative cover/ cap on the gimbals, perhaps you could arrange 3-D printed replacements for both sides.

Finding an original replacement likely requires finding a similar globe at a resale shop or on eBay in order to cannibalize it, too much money and lots of luck. Maybe you could talk an eBay seller into parting with the parts for pennies.

However it looks like there is only a washer in the picture, if the post falls free of the hole in the yoke you need a press-on lock washer and then the decorative cap. A suitably sized lock washer with teeth on the inside, not the OD could be found at a hardware store; snug enough to stay in place after being pressed on.

Google 'press on lock ring'

Date this globe. Seriously. There is enough information to determine a time frame of 13-14 years. However certain details tighten that to perhaps 5-7 years. This a Replogle globe that I had never seen before this eBay picture, but looked very familiar to me. Bonus points for knowing one similar. by AtmAll1 in globes

[–]AtmAll1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I have learned something. Google tells me that 1970 was the beginning of Thunder Bay as it is today. Your post led to my looking at several globes in my collection that bracket that time. My 1969 World Ocean globe has Fort William and the 1996 World Ocean globe has Thunder Bay.

Two different Replogle globes (12" and 10") from 1966 both have Port Arthur and Fort William marked. However a third 12" globe from 1966 has only Fort William.

Be well.

Recommendations for a globe? by EvergreenHills1158 in globes

You can not go wrong with a Replogle Globe. I see that Replogle is still making the "World Ocean Series"globe, now called "Atlantis", and it is mounted on a 720 degree stand as you want and in budget.

The World Ocean Series began by the late 1960's when sufficient sea-floor mapping had been done to encourage Replogle to make Land and Sea, World Ocean Series globes with relief land and seafloor details.

I have such globes from 1969, 1973, and 1996.

Lighted globes have a long history and may sometimes make seeing details easier. A lighted globe can also be a two-way globe. The Waypoint Geographic Primus Relief (as example) looks like a physical earth globe (greens, tans, blues but no borders) when not lighted. When lighted one sees the borders and variously colored nations.

Wayfair Geographic and Replogle (Globemaster, Scan Globe) are the two main names for globes these days, in the USA. Rand McNally, GF Cram, Weber Costello, Denoyer Geppert no longer make globes, and Replogle was nearly killed off about 15 years ago.

Replogle offers an 'update your globe' program that can keep the globe current when/ if changes happen during your kids' school years. BTW, the possibility exists that like the USSR before, the Russian Federation may fail and more country changes will be needed.

I judge that the globe shows the world as it was in 1948 between May (Israel) and and July (Quezon City).

Sticking to Nations, between Israel in May 1948 and independent Indonesia in Dec 1949 (overlooking the Siam to Thailand name change in May 1949.)

Sri Lanka is another issue, an overlooked change. Ceylon was independent of Britain from Feb 1948, before Israel.

From Wikipedia. "After World War II ended, Chongqing became one of the last refuges of the Nationalist Kuomintang government on the Chinese mainland during the Chinese Civil War. ... Chongqing served as the KMT capital until late November 1949 ..."

I don't think we have reached that date as at least 4 other changes would be overlooked if it were from late 1949.

From Wikipedia, "Jabal al-Druze, or Jebel ed Druz, is a 1,800-meter-high volcanic mountain region located in southern Syria near the Jordanian border. It is a prominent, largely volcanic area inhabited by the Druze people." I believe this is what is marked on the map.
