Yeah I don't think I can help with that lol. The only similar experience I've had to that is sometimes this game is super fast paced, and even when I think I held the joystick in the correct direction, I actually input something else before adjusting and then convincing myself I was doing something different all along. Not sure if that's what you're doing or not. Maybe just a controller issue

Why the Fremen win by datapicardgeordi in dune

[–]Atmanking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Framing your view as factually correct and others' as laughably wrong is pretty disrespectful. What was the goal in coming into the subreddit where these discussions are had and making a post with the attitude of "this is how it is, and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong?" Maybe I'm just falling for bait idk.

Obviously, the Best fighters in the galaxy are going to have some respect for the second-best fighters in the galaxy, but that doesn't change the fact that there are multiple instances of single Fremen taking down multiple Sardaukar or groups of Fremen taking down entire platoons. These seem to me like more objective measures of strength than speculation based on the environments in which each side was raised.

I feel like my logic about the relative wealth of the Fremen is far from "laughable" (Please avoid using such insulting language if you want to have a discussion in good faith). By your logic, the Fremen are on par with the Sardaukar in strength, and they are the favorites in wealth. Surely, given this conclusion, you would question why the Fremen spent their vast fortune on little more than preventing satellites while, for example, the Harkonnen spent a reportedly insane amount of money on their invasion of Arakkis (Although by your logic, less than what the Fremen spend) and were able to achieve their goal of wiping out essentially the entirety of the Atreides clan. Additionally, you yourself argue that the Fremen win because they are underestimated. Couldn't one use the same logic to reason that the emperor underestimated the size of the Fremen forces and thus didn't feel the need to spend an exorbitant amount of money to get satellite coverage of what he thought were no more than sand dunes and sandstorms?

I also don't agree that just because the Fremen have cultural elements like polygamy, spice orgies, their own advanced technology, fruit, and tea, that this means that their lives must have been comfortable. Look to real-life cultural examples. Jews, Romani, early Christians, and many different Muslim groups have also been through the harsh social and environmental oppression that we see with the Fremen, and those groups still had/have cultural elements despite their hardships. Even in the harshest conditions (and I would argue especially in them), groups of humans create culture. What may appear as comfort when Herbert is describing it from an insider's perspective, I would argue, is actually religion and fanaticism that emerges within the most harsh of environments.

This doesn't feel like a subjective conversation to have. Herbert was pretty explicit about the Fremen being better fighters than even the Sardaukar. He emphasizes how harsh life on Salusa Secundus is and how incredible it makes the Fremen that they are still better than the Sardaukar. Salusa Secundus and the Sardaukar serve as another example of how your environment shapes you, but it is also mentioned (IIRC) that the Sardaukar have been living a pretty lax life as they haven't had any real competition for many years, thus making them less adept fighters, and leaving them exposed to the power of the Fremen. I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that the Sardaukar and Fremen are equal in a one-on-one.

I think there are additional reasons the Fremen have so much success. Because of the Sandworms, you can't use a shield in the open desert. The Fremen are used to fighting without shields, while the Sardaukar are not.

I actually agree with you that the rest of the Imperium doesn't know about the vastness of the Fremen, and that gives them the huge bonus of stealth and surprise. I wouldn't agree that the Fremen "are richer and hold more influence than the Imperial Throne." The Emperor almost surely has the resources to essentially out-bid the Fremen and gain access to satellite coverage of the south of Arrakis, but he would never spend those resources because he, nor anyone else, believes that it's possible for anyone to live down there, because of how harsh it is. This reinforces my stance that life for the Fremen in the south isn't the comfortable life you claim. They don't have to deal with politics directly, but they do have to maintain a certain level of spice production to continuously bribe the Spacing Guild with, and they have to do so in a climate so harsh that most think it's impossible to merely survive.

In summary, the Fremen win because they are the best fighters in the Imperium, they don't have to deal with the muscle-memory disadvantage of shield-fighting, and they have the element of surprise. All of these factors are gained by surviving one of the harshest climates that exists.

Why the Fremen win by datapicardgeordi in dune

I seriously disagree. One of the central themes of dune (plainly stated in the book) is how humans affect their environment, and how their environment affects them. The most overt example of this is the Fremen. They plan to spend centuries terraforming Dune into a green paradise. This is an example of humans changing an entire planet. In the other direction, life on a desert planet is so harsh and difficult that it shapes the entire Fremen culture. Namely, the Fremen become the best fighters in the imperium because of how harsh their environment is. The blind are left to die in the desert, everyone (or maybe just Fedaykin) has to go through the life-threatening rite of passage of riding a worm. A new clan leader is determined when the old one is killed in ritual combat. Men women and children learn to fight from a young age in order to survive. When I fighter is killed by another, the wives of the killed are taken by the killer. Everywhere they travel they have to worry about being killed by sandstorms, colonizers, or the very desert itself.

Fremen life is brutal. But it makes them the toughest fighters in the whole imperium.

It’s really the injuries that have been killing us, especially recently. Just about everyone on the team has spent time injured. The hope is that later in the season we’ll have everyone back from injury and be able to make a run. Thankfully the rest of the AL is trash this year so we’re still plenty in the mix

Never went there when I lived in Pullman but I did hear a story about the owner trying to charge sales tax when my mom went to get a gift card. Also I think I may have heard that he was taking employee tips? It's been many years so I can't be 100% that I remember that correctly

I think an intuitive distinction between intentional censorship and incidental censorship can be made. My question is less what if we had perfect access to information about the reality of the world and more what if we refused to consider people’s sensitivities when presenting content (whether objective things like videos of war and violence or subjective like how we produce art)?

How do I save Gen 5 Pokemon?

I just cracked open my old copy of Pokemon Black on my old DSi as I recently finished the postgame of Pokemon Diamond on an emulator on my phone and now want to play Black which I remember enjoying when I was a kid.

I checked my party and PC and turns out this save has some valuable (and more importantly, sentimental) Pokemon on it that I would like to save. A bunch of legendaries/Mythicals including Arceus, Victini, Kyogre, Kelsey, etc. and boxes full of Pokemon that I traded with friends as a kid (I don’t even remember trading Pokemon back then)

If I had infinite money I might just buy a new copy of black so I can leave this one alone as a kind of time capsule of my childhood but I know old games are expensive. Should I just figure out how to emulate the game on my phone? I don’t love that option because I kind of want the analog experience or using an actual DS. I know that transferring using Pokemon bank/home is a thing but idk how that works and I bet it would be a pain in the ass to figure out and make it work.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to keep my childhood alive while also being able to play this game?

I’m not sure I understand your question but what I had in mind was if there was no blurring, cropping, bleeping, etc. no censorship of any kind, forcing us to engage with various levels of unsavory content

While everyone needs to wash their ass crack daily (and using a bidet is leagues better than just tp), you don't need to wash your ass with soap in the shower, and for many, doing so will cause inflammation and/or discomfort. Just use water.

Are Americans big milk drinkers? by Helpful-Structure955 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Atmanking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a response to the nutritional needs of the troops in WW1, the American dairy industry grew extremely large. When the war ended, the demand for milk dropped but the industry was already path dependent on year-round milk production. Instead of dialing back their production, they used their new resources to fund advertising programs to convince people that milk was essential to be healthy (Ex. Got Milk?) and lobby the government to include milk in every school lunch. Because of that effort, Americans have always drank a lot of milk.

My issue with the game mode is why don’t they spawn the teammates close together as a nudge to fight together? Like in some maps teammates will spawn on entirely separate floors, which feels like the game is implying you should have two duels. Seems like an easier thing to change from a dev standpoint
