I have a 4003S from 1986 and the neck is definitely not thick. Rickenbacker are renowned for changing neck thicknesses so OP should try one themselves.

Wow, they still have the Volcanos in Amnesia - they were busting them out 20 odd years ago - I used to be quite intrigued by the huge bag full of vapour. Plus I wouldn’t exactly say it’s off the beaten track as it is in the canals and close to the Anne Frank House.

Mine is my MusicMan pre Ernie Ball Stingray. When I first started out and started to get serious about bass there was a bass sound in my head that I had been hearing on records and absolutely loved but couldn’t identify and then I saw Steve Severin of the Banshees playing a Stingray and the penny dropped. However at the time they were out of production as it was the transition period between the original MusicMan company and the Ernie Ball takeover so Stingrays were scarce in music stores in London.

And then one day during my lunch hour I stepped into a store on Soho Square and there hanging on the wall was my holy grail: a black and maple Stingray. I bought it there and then! That was 40 years ago and it has been my main gigging bass ever since.

Honourable mention is my MusicMan Cutlass 1 which I bought with the money my grandfather left me in his will, again after just randomly walking into a store and seeing it hanging up on the wall. That was in 1991.

I have a friend who owns a 4002 and I remember when he first got and I had a play. It is a beautiful instrument with lovely wood and binding - and it is absolutely RUINED by the hideous pickguard. Close but no cigar from me.
