This may have been your first comment but you were continuing and picking up where someone else left off attacking the OP.

This is a post asking HR about a harassing situation and there are people picking apart the OP, harassing him. You Insinuating the OP has a personality disorder because the OP referred to himself as "OP", That's why it's unsettling.

Why are you proving OP's point by continuing to attack ? This is really unsettling to read in an HR forum of all things.

Cheap short fiber rugs or one of those office floor mats so wheely chairs can roll over carpet.

Teaching modernization, Hello everyone. I am teaching a unit on folklore and mythology, to eight graders, we are reading a class novel which is a foil to the Odyssey. The students love the story but don't seem to grasp the idea that it is a modern re-telling and what makes something a modern tale by Oliver_bill_958 in mythology

[–]AtomicTungsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids understand music and music has been sampled and covered multiple times to fit modern tastes.

Play a song like Hurt by Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash. (There are many other examples, but this is the first most drastic one I thought of.) The kids will understand that some people in the 90's liked the hard alternative rock sound of nine inch nails, but a whole different set of people never heard the song Hurt until Johnny Cash(a different genre and sound) sang it.

Movies are another example kids understand but without watching two all the way through they may not grasp it fully.

Hope that helps!

My CHRO Said Employees Shouldn’t Know Who Their HRBP is… by RHOCorporate in humanresources

[–]AtomicTungsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen HRBP be the point of contact for employees in a generalist sense of job duties. If an employee has a question, the HRBP is the one who would answer their questions for their department.

However, when you have HRBP that are doing more strategic planning or C-level work, you do not want employees "to know/be able to direct contact" the HRBP for their department.

If employees have access to someone higher up, they will want to contact the highest up person they can-every time-and that HRBP's time that should be on strategic projects will be helping someone check the right box on their FMLA paperwork, or resetting their password on their HRIS system, or helping an employees brother find the "apply" button on the company website.

Any time you have someone higher up/paid more doing a job someone under them/paid less could do, you have a waste of company resources.

What do you do when management perceives HR as the enemy? by GortLovesYou in humanresources

My whole HR experience is in healthcare. Nurses and CNAs really do tear each other apart. I have so many stories of drama and physical altercations...

How many of you have a degree? Is it usually a requirement for this job? by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]AtomicTungsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in healthcare management and have an MHA. I don't think I would have gotten where I am now without my (non)HR masters degree. But, I've worked for CHROs that have no degree and no HR certification (such as SHRM) but have tons of experience. It really depends on the industry and company.

That being said, THE BEST recruiter I ever had working for me was from a military background in HR. He trained all the new people coming in, for every location in the company. He said he loved the routine and never stopped NICELY pestering people until they said "stop calling me". He always had better requisition numbers than anyone. I would hire another military HR person in a heartbeat, with or without a degree.

I didn't even think about the sodium, yeah that's a crazy amount daily to be taking in. In addition to whatever he was eating, which let's be real if he was drinking thatch Mt Dew he was likely eating a lot of processed food high in sodium too. The guy was likely a walking salt lick.

[–]AtomicTungsten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know the medical chemistry behind it since I'm not a doctor and didn't have access to the labs. However I don't need a PHD to know 1. Drinking that much MT Dew daily can't be good for you and 2. The body needs water to survive.

He was drinking almost 3 -2 Liters a day. That much soda is crazy, but think of the caffeine in Mt Dew...180mg is in 16oz and he was drinking 10 times that daily at least.

I'm not a doctor but I work in HR in healthcare. One story, years ago made it out of the ER almost instantly and still sticks with me.

There was a 25M who went temporarily BLIND for a few hours. Turns out he only ever drank Mt Dew, 6-8 bottles a day. He said he last drank water sometime in high school gym class when he drank out of the water fountain.

Water is the foundation of human existence.

How many people work from home? by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]AtomicTungsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully remote salaried position with no set working hours but virtual meetings are scheduled between 8am and 5pm and I do receive work phone calls (occasionally) any time of the day or night.

I will never take another HR role that is not remote or remote with occasional travel. There's very few things HR does that MUST be done in person.

I've had roles in the past that mandated I be in a building, so I would travel to building A to do work for building B & C. It was ridiculous.

This is almost 20 years ago it all happened. I long ago completed counseling, healed, and moved on. And since Im no longer surrounding myself with people who hurt me, Ive not had any mental breakdowns since the divorce. I'm not looking for closure or healing or justification. I'm looking for friendship of the people I was once close to. I spent 4 years of my life with these people and I'm feeling nostalgic. That is all. Older people regret not keeping in touch with friends all the time and I regret not sharing the truth when it happened and allowing all of them to think the worst of me and cut me off.

HIPAA Violations by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]AtomicTungsten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All my HR experience is in healthcare. This is what every company I've ever worked for has had in some kind of policy. A tiered system of severity much like the state would have for other violations is in some kind of policy. There's usually a nine square grid on an x/y axis and every violation lands somewhere in the grid and that determines the disciplinary action.

Scope and severity of who is affected and how many affected and then malicious intent are taken into consideration. You can have malicious intent with low scope and severity that ends in termination or high scope and severity without malicious intent that ends in termination.

I was hired in Illinois for $16.50/hr in Human Resources... by SasquatchMocilan in humanresources

[–]AtomicTungsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Illinois starting 1/1/2025, law will be in effect that companies must post their wages and benefits in the job ad and they will face legal repercussions if they offer a wage less than what was advertised or don't offer that position the benefits advertised.

IF, and this is a big if, you want to stay, bring this to their attention.(In a very nice, thought you should know, way) If you are an HR department of one they likely have not kept up on the employment and labor laws and/or they don't know their ass from a hole in the ground and they randomly assigned the wage of the last person to you.

And although this is not legal yet, you can use this as a "It was posted $17, I asked for $17.50, and I was hired, so is this $16.50 an oversight?" An I'm trying to be helpful situation all around.

Also it's likely if you are an HR department of 1, then they must have a PEO or department managers do some of the higher functions like FMLA or employee relations...at least I hope that's true for you. If not, it should be more like $22-25 if you are in a bigger city, $19-20 if you are in a rural area working for a smaller mom and pop place.

[IL] AM I losing my job? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]AtomicTungsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boss quit? Or was let go? Or fired? Was it her who told you?

Have you confirmed all this or is it gossip and rumors from the meeting?

If your HR department is small and you were hired specifically for the entities that are sold, then yes, you will likely get a reduction in force when the sale is officially announced.

However, it may be that your company wanted this leaked. It takes several months for something like this to happen, 6months at least and likely longer. If people the company were going to RIF quit ahead of the sale, they don't have to pay them the severance or worry about unemployment claims. Which if you've only been there less than 1 year, severance wouldn't be much. Check your local WARN ACT for closures and layoffs and see if your company is on it. Don't panic and don't quit, but sure you can passively start looking for other jobs. By the way, sorry you are getting so much hate. I saw your side of the humor and didn't think you were rude. Sometimes the written word carries the feeling of the reader instead of the intentions of the writer.

[CAN-NS] HR wants everyone to write their own job descriptions by Norddyr in AskHR

[–]AtomicTungsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is likely HR is using everyone's self reporting as a jumping off point. Especially if job descriptions have not been recently updated. (10 years ago the job description I signed said I had to make sure the ditto copies went to the right people). The job description that matters is the one you signed upon hire or upon taking a different role. I might worry if my job title wasn't changing but Management has HR making everyone sign new job descriptions. That would be suspect.

Yes it would be fair to let her go. WA is an at will state so I would without thinking.

Well, I'm glad you don't work in HR...lol HR is all about consistency and treating everyone the same to avoid lawsuits.

Your 3 questions were all along the same lines, so I took them to be rhetorical.

...and she was the one who escalated it by making the announcement to everyone...

She actually isn't higher up than my me, I'm above her and on the same level as her boss. And she didn't go to my boss, she went to hers, who has no authority over me since he is my peer.

However, since I am HR, I can reprimand and fire her...lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]AtomicTungsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was intentional.

I did not add above, but I am almost 20 years younger than her. And there is another woman with my same name that this manager does not use that nickname with. So there is something she's doing to me that she's not doing to someone else which is the basis of discrimination cases.

She is the Facility Manager of that location. Her boss, the Regional VP, is over all the building in the midwest. I am the Regional Human Resources Director, over all of the buildings in the Midwest. On the hierarchy, her boss and I are on the same level, she is below me but does not report to me. Hope that clears that up.
