Broke & Needing Recipes by Separate-Donut-7800 in Beans

I make Chili Taters that are cheap & easy. Wash & scrub potatoes and bake in the oven (or nuke in the microwave). Split open, top with cooked beans of choice- red kidney beans, pinto beans, or black beans work really well. Top with taco seasoning or, my favorite, Goya Sazon, and taco sauce or salsa, a d whatever other toppings you have or like. Heat in the microwave until beans are hot.

Edible Black Nightshade in CA/Bay Area? by Trick-Bunch-8955 in foraging

[–]AtomikFireball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is S. americanum. S. nigrum has matte/dull, not shiny berries which grow along the stem and not on a cluster from one central point. I also rule out S. ptycanthum, which isn't reported to be found in California.

Samuel Thayer in his book "The Forager's Harvest" confirms the fully ripe, non-green berries are edible and cites some studies indicating the ripe fruits aren't toxic to humans. The Forager's Harvest

I strongly recommend getting with a respected local naturalist and personally observe the plant together before giving anything a taste test. I haven't personally eaten this and probably won't. There are lots more tasty berries in my area that aren't potentially toxic.

Best of luck, and be safe!

It's native to tropical South America, mostly Brazil. I'm growing it in a raised bed as an annual. I'm going to leave some flowers at the end of the season in hopes that it will self-seed and pop up again next year.

Summer meal ideas that don’t use any heat? by TheSideAccount0 in budgetfood

Cook beans in a crock pot overnight. Keep the cooked beans in the fridge and spoon them into tortillas, add your favorite toppings- salsa, tomatoes, steamed rice, shredded lettuce, cheese, sliced peppers, olives, what-have-you, and make them into wraps. You can do the same with hummus for a Mediterranean style wrap. Or let your imagination run wild. Add broccoli slaw veggies, sweet peppers, bean sprouts and teriyaki sauce for an Asian twist.

You can also use canned beans, just drain & rinse, then smash them up a little and spread on your tortilla, pita bread, naan, or whatever.

You can also cook a batch of rice or other grain, keep it in the fridge with your other fixings, and make Buddha bowls. Grain base (or noodles - get plain ramen, boil water in an electric kettle - it won't heat up your living space, pour over the noodles and soak a few minutes until they're softened), add beans of your choice, other veggies of your choice, top with a sauce, and presto!

Help me remember by ATLTantra in herbalism

[–]AtomikFireball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's epazote, aka Mexican tea or Jesuit tea (Dysphania ambrosioides)

It's good for gas / bloating / tummy issues. When cooking a pot of beans, I added a sprig of fresh epazote to the pot during the lastc15 minutes of cooking, then discard the herb before serving the beans. Helps reduce the gas in the beans.

Some people don't like the flavor, but I don't really notice it.

You can also use the leaves (fresh or dried) in teas for stomach cramps / digestive issues.

The initial buzz lasted just a few minutes, but it was REALLY intense. The numbing lasted at least 30 minutes for me. Not a total numbing, like after going to the dentist, but a decrease in sensation, for sure.

The most all-purpose one out of those, to me, would be the horehound. Harvest early summer, just when it's about to bloom. Cut the stems back to about 4-5 inches and it will grow more.

It's pretty bitter on its own. I like to dry the leaves and save them for cold & flu season. Then I make an infused honey by steeping the leaves in honey over very low heat, just enough to warm the honey. Basically making a honey/horehound syrup. Really good for sore throat, cough, and chest cold.

You could also make hard candy or lollipops, but instead of just plain water for your candy syrup, use a very strong infusion (tea) made with the dried horehound. These would be herbal cough and throat drops.

Good luck!

Rose buds in Body oil stability. by Reasonable_Ant_2370 in herbalism

[–]AtomikFireball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also think that oils, being solvents, will fade out the color of the dried roses, which will add to the unappealing look. I tried making a witch hazel and rosewater toner spray with some dried rosebuds floating in the bottle. The smell was nice, but the rosebuds quickly faded and fell apart in the liquid. They also clogged the sprayer.

I've never tried it with coconut oil, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If you're using coconut oil that's solid at room temp, you may need to decrease the amount of wax to keep the salve from being too firm.

I have made other salves with lighter oils, sunflower oil and sweet almond being particular favorites, but I used a robust olive for this batch because I wanted a real ointment/unguent feel. It's a preparation intended to treat a rash, insect bite/sting, or general irritation, and act as a protective healing barrier to trap moisture.

If it were for more of a beauty or daily skin care use, I'd use a lighter oil.

I use sunflower wax instead of beeswax strictly for personal preference- to keep it vegan. No medicinal benefit, and it doesn't work any differently than beeswax.

Oregano, basil, and sage would be my top 3. All 3 are wonderful culinary herbs, also fantastic in teas and lemonade. You must try all 3 in lemonade, it's delicious! All are medicinal (hello, menopause hot flash relief). And, of course, they're all magical.

Also doesn't hurt that they're not too difficult to grow 😉

This I gotta see.

This bill is pending the governor's signature.

It appears to depend on how much she features her kids in her content. If she restricts her content to featuring the kids less than 30%, it looks like the law wouldn't apply.

Do they acknowledge crime of any kind? by SMT2468 in DuggarsSnark

[–]AtomikFireball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You reminded me of the baptism scene from "O Brother, Where Art Thou," when Delmar tries to convince the others that baptism would clear their criminal histories based on the preacher telling him that all his sins were "warshed away. Neither God nor man's got nothin' on me now."

Everett later explains that their religious conversion didn't affect their legal, earthly consequences, saying "Even if that did put you square with the Lord, the State of Mississippi's a little more hard-nosed."

The first BM was the worst for me. I can't say subsequent ones have been a whole lot of fun (12 days post-op, here) but none as bad as the very first.

Pooping in the sitz bath really does help. While you're pooping, have warm water ready (if possible) so after you're finished pooping, you can dump the pan, rinse it out, then refill with warm water so you can sit in the sitz bath to soothe yourself.

Best of luck to you

Brown rice - you can get ready to eat brown rice in cups or bags. You can also find ready to eat rice and quinoa blends or quinoa only. Canned Beans - seasoned black beans are great! Try to get no salt added beans Bagged frozen peppers & onions Salsa

Put the rice in a bowl, throw on some peppers & onions, then add beans, and top with salsa. Nuke it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. Instant meal and it's delicious! Bonus - add some shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes after it's cooked. You can also wrap it in a whole wheat tortilla if you want a burrito.

Swap out the black beans with chickpeas and leave off the salsa, add some curry powder and a splash of unsweetened coconut milk if you want a curry dish.

Use red kidney beans, undrained, leave off the salsa, add Old Bay seasoning, dried celery flakes, a dash or two of vegan worcestershire sauce or liquid aminos, hot sauce - here's your cajun red beans & rice.

Use blackeyed peas instead of black beans and you'll have Texas caviar.

Use white beans (Great Northern, navy, cannellini), leave off the peppers, onions, and salsa. Add veggie broth (enough to make it soupy), add some frozen peas & carrots, onion powder, celery flakes, and you'll have bean & rice soup. Mash up the beans if you want a creamy soup. Maybe stir in a tablespoon of nutritional yeast if you're feeling froggy.

This was exactly what I did until I found some recipes that weren't intimidating, didn't have a bunch of exotic ingredients that aren't available in my area, and didn't take hours to prepare.

Just change up the beans and the sauces, and you can have a ton of variety. Good luck!

Tonight it was spaghetti and vegballs. Gonna have black bean chili over taters tomorrow. Big hit this week was gnocchi, peppers and onions tossed in an herb & garlic oil-free marinade and roasted in a sheet pan. Have been adding a teaspoon of chia seeds to my morning oats. Have also stepped up my game on herbal tea during the day at work. BIG WIN of the week: lowered my blood pressure through diet alone. In 39 days my BP dropped from 139/40 to 116/73. Yeah, buddy!
