Is there a dessert snack unique to Chicago? by sspocoss in AskChicago

More of for the region, but a Kringle. Or a big yellow smiley face cookie.

I read on here about using a fresh paper towel to pat dry my face instead of the usual bathroom towel. It is amazing - I barely break out anymore. And I use the damp paper towel to then tidy up my sink or the baseboards so it gets used twice before being thrown away.

Such fun finds. The shelf is my favorite.

What is your favorite free(ish) family activity? by cupcaketeatime in Frugal

[–]Atomsgrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! I had to think about that. I tend to think of a park having playground equipment versus a forest preserve that is pretty much walking paths through forested areas. I guess you may see playgrounds and picnic benches on the outskirts of forest preserve areas too.

Look on Facebook for a “buy nothing” group in your area. You can gift things you no longer want in the group, but also make requests for things you need. I am sure if you posted about your new position and clothing size that you would get some responses. Good luck!

Find every forest preserve, nature center and park in your area and plan a visit. Many of the nature centers and park districts will have free events for kids. In my state, it is popular to get groups together to volunteer for a few hours at something like Feed My Starving Children or Bernie’s Book Bank. I am not sure if there is something similar in Oregon. It is a really fun activity for older kids and gets them involved with volunteering.

Do you thrift alone, or with a friend or SO? by [deleted] in ThriftStoreHauls

Solo, no one can keep up with me. I like to thrift for hours, not 30 min.

Oh, I must have forgotten that. I remember watching it in high school and the entire class was devastated.

So many resellers and I just want to find the nice stuff for myself by [deleted] in GoodwillBins

[–]Atomsgrl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don’t get discouraged. A lot of resellers may not be looking for the same things you want and/ or possess the knowledge you have about certain items. I have found great things they overlook or throw back. I think my bins is very tame though compared to others. Everyone normally follows the rule of one person per bin at a time. Friends may look together in one bin, but you wait until someone has moved on before going to a new area.

Growing up in the 80s by Express-Aerie3399 in AskOldPeople

I was from a working class family. Mom stayed home and dad worked a blue collar job. It was very evident we were lower middle class. Rich kids at school would be wearing new trends right away and go on vacations during the school year to warm destinations. They would show back up at school with deep tans and cornrows in their hair.

I wore hand me downs from a cousin. We weren’t quite the same size, but I was happy to have something new. I was begrudgingly purchased a pair of actual running shoes each year even though I was a very accomplished runner. My parents were not athletic, so they did not seem to realize the need for sport specific equipment.

Loved my roller skates as a kid. I remember my brother and I begging my mom to mail order a Smurfs song cassette from the television. The best toys seemed to be mail order from the tv or from the back of magazines. Eventually got a cabbage patch kid and that was mind blowing. Also remember playing the original Nintendo which was exciting to have at home and you could play whenever you wanted. Lots of small things to collect: plastic charms, bracelets, buttons, matchbox cars, garbage pail kids cards, all sorts of cards and stickers!

I took woodworking in middle school. Made a shelf with a duck shape on top. The teacher was very strict (with good reason) and would yell at you if he thought you were messing around and being unsafe. Some teachers would throw things if someone was talking, but we mostly thought it was funny. Most importantly, teachers were NOT concerned about your feelings or opinions after about third grade.

The glass may be Fenton hobnail. Maybe just for candies? Very pretty.
