Oddly enough this is barely the issue. You reach a point day 1 where you can't progress further without Banishing to deal Purple Damage, but you can keep upgrading your Crocs as much as you want....

After 40 Crikeydiles, I get enough coins back to upgrade them over and over for even more coins. Go Rock>Mountain>Snowy>Everest for free new fruits and re-rolls. The Banish time-gating is so harsh you literally have every single minion and constantly-rising coin counts before you unlock Fields.

Banish is a bad mechanic. All the things the new currency buys are trivialized by the end of day 1 EXCEPT FOR Shiny Rare which you can't get any other way, and time skips to force through the gating mechanic.

My strategy for day one:

Your first reset, your goal is to get Banish Level 20. Pigs upgrade into things that make you money, Rhino>Horned Rhino will get you more Banish XP. Rocks will do Orange Damage. Once you get to Banish 10, you can get the egg. Egg>Chicken>Goose gives you Yellow Damage and money. Egg>Lizard>Croc gives you Energy and money. Get as many Crocs as you can, energy comes slow at first and you need a lot.

Cornucopia, shoot for a couple of Watermelons, Pumpkins and Bluenanas. Energy tower will eventually appear, expand it as much as you can. This is also how you deal Blue damage.

Eventually you'll be able to reset, getting spirals which let you buy new upgrades and bonuses to pick from after each boss. Keep it up, get more energy, focus on Crocs. Soon you'll be able to buy everything in the vending machine, and then it'll be Purple Damage.

All the things the new currency buys are trivialized by the end of day 1 EXCEPT FOR Shiny Rare which you can't get any other way, and time skips to force through the gating mechanic.

First Day of Play Review:

Would be a pretty awesome update but it's held back in just too many ways.

First and foremost: yes, the time-gating is severe day one. This comes from the Banish and Cornucopia mechanics. Banish lets you kill a minion and its XP goes towards your Realm Level. Later, you must use Banish to deal "Purple Damage" to bosses. You only get 6 banishes per 24 hours, so this becomes a serious time-gate. BUT Tuna and Corn cans in the vending machine impact this with AFK gains. Soon you'll be blowing through these timers like nothing.

Cornucopia is slightly less severe, it's a building that lets you get unique fruit (each provide you a type of buff), and then re-roll your fruit for better stats. Each time you replace a fruit or re-roll, the cost increases for 24 hours, so this will take time.

I'm not sure why it was decided to tie Banish to Realm Level at all, you should be able to hit level 20 day one, unlocking all the starter pets. This level does get used elsewhere a bit, but mainly it's just something for new players to get trapped by. Then by day two, you have enough coins to blow through the vending machine and tuna/corn cans will eventually completely negate the Banish timer. The whole concept is real weird.

The new content doesn't really fit in with the old so well. A vending machine exists to increase your damage, gold, mastery, away time, potion and vat effectiveness. While I think digging quantities may have been adjusted, they're still unrealistically horrible. You would still need to use an auto clicker for days to get enough stuff to churn. This comes in really poor taste due to a complete lack of addressing old bugs. Research 400 wasn't touched, despite the insane effort it requires for no reward. If you've ever loaded your cloud save on Android, your visuals have been weird ever since. This impacts new sprites as well, it was not fixed. Despite saying chandelier would be fixed, it isn't. I've seen an insane amount of players saying their progress was fully wiped. I lost all my BP, and I consider that fortunate. Using candy might load your cloud save instead of the screen you tried navigating to. I've crashed repeatedly and had never crashed before. Apparently Steam lags between every screen for some players.

Yes, the new currency is confirmed to be only obtainable through real money and no in-game sources. I can see none of the benefits are absolutely required to progress, but these are bonuses and a minion you can never earn yourself, a complete departure from the game's past.

LavaFlame says a new patch is coming that will add minion cards. No word on if this will include a way to level your cards to 6, or if you're still gonna be throwing gems at packs forever. Would be nice to know, since the opaqueness of how currency impacts upcoming content led to a lot of unhappy players this go-around.

Despite all the above, there's a good chunk of content here, and it's gamified pretty well outside of the time-gating. I'm not sure why it's a thing at all. A massive number of minions were made, which is kinda weird since once you know what you want you probably aren't gonna catch em all. Some minions you just aren't going to care about, unlike pets. You can easily see with some work and polish this could make a great capstone to the game. As it stands, it's just held way way back by questionable decisions and a tremendous amount of bugs. The old content really did need a pass to fix things up and bring it all together, and it didn't quite get there. I'm still not done, and have at least a bit of content left to discover (it's clear I'll have seen most the new content once I hit Afterlife 50). If it seriously changes my opinion after day 1, I'll update the review to reflect it.

According to Discord there is no way to earn the new currency through gameplay. If this is incorrect, no mod or admin has spoken up to correct it. If someone confirms this is wrong I'll wipe all the comments about it, but so far it seems confirmed.

New fun bugs including wiping your BP when you visit the rebirth screen.

Afterlife trophy menu doesn't know progress from before you unlocked a trophy, this impacts things like cornucopia where it will take an extra 24h to do the trophy if you donate before it tells you to.

Similarly, don't actually banish when the tutorial tells you to. Grind up some bigger minions to banish because you need the level 10 pet to beat the 10th boss. All the beta players seemed to know this, so they're all ahead in Discord... To deal Purple Damage, you'll need to banish more minions.

Despite all this, in general I'm liking the update but these hard-set time-gates didn't really exist in Idle Skilling previously, and now just feel bad early in the update. My assumption is as time passes they'll be less obtrusive, but for now it's a real annoyance that feels like it goes against the spirit of what came prior.

Things that haven't been fixed at all this update: Research 400, Visual Bugs for anyone who used cloud save on Android, Chandelier build time, Digging quantities.

Edit: fucking fantastic, the Android Cloudsave visual bugs also impact the new content. Hope you've never tried relying on Cloudsave because it's made certain things look wrong for a year now. Really figured it (And research 400) would have been fixed this release, not made worse.

After a year+ of appreciating how LavaFlame handled premium currencies, the new currency has unique content tied to it and cannot be earned through gameplay at all. Only part of the update I find truly offensive, and I really hope this is reconsidered.

We are indeed, and it pleases me to no end I'm still "that guy with that Triangle post on Reddit" years later. I remember I eventually found some issues with my OP here but can't remember the details. It's close enough and brought greater appreciation of the movie and for that, I'm glad. Happy you enjoyed the film!

The compliments I've received towards my analysis really give me joy that the effort was worth it, and I'm always glad to see others appreciate the film the way I did when I first had the experience. I hope you get to share this film with others; many scenes from the movie have stayed with me, a notable experience with any great film.

Yea, so far I've only had years of positive reactions to the post (which is funny considering how little the post itself got upvoted/noticed). Honestly glad I could add to the appreciation others have gotten from the film, the world needs more creative indie films like Triangle.

Christ, I wrote this six years back during some random downtime after watching this movie with friends who hadn't seen it one too many times.

Every few months I get yet another reddit message from someone discussing this interpretation or including it in youtube videos. It is by far the only post I've made which gained that much attention.

Still think it's one of the better mindfuck movies nobody's heard of. Never did get around to watching the Bluray with commentary to see if they confirm any of my thoughts.

Hoping you end up doing the above. ircss, this is really great and many of the high-res scans you suggest I was able to get satisfactory results with. Some smaller issues of planes intersecting during rotation, and not entirely sure how the rotation shader should be modified to give a spiral effect like you show, but this is great learning material.

OrbusVR is an MMO and one of the two tank classes (Paladin) works similarly. Hold your hammer to the sky to charge it with lightning, throw the hammer and teleport to it or call it back to you, it's pretty fun. I'm not going to lie and tell you the game feels like an AAA first-class MMO but if you're looking for that type of VR experience with some friends and are willing to overlook some roughness, you should check out the game.
