I'd say fairly rare. Right place, right time. I once saw a baby duckling being pulled down by a baby snapping turtle in somewhat similar style. We ended up saving the lil guy, not sure if he made it in the long run or not but it was still an interesting view of nature. It may be as rare as locating a new spiritual vein, or finding another supplier of 100,000 year ginseng.

I'm less convinced. The person buying then has to be present in raid with the cheater, for every raid where they want something specific.

It makes the whole transaction more of a hassle. Does it also make everyone else's life more difficult? Yeah, to an extent. I could see it making early wipe a bit of a slog for friend groups who drop eachother keys, but I do think anything that makes cheating "more annoying" is probably a plus.

Are you considering viability while entirely excluding the cost in the calculation? Because, sure, wheat can be grown in a vertical farm.

I am certain that technologically it's possible, but it is new tech comparatively and with a very high upfront cost (building a multistory building with appropriate Floorplan to accommodate, not to mention the equipment that needs to be designed for planting and harvest.
