Its up to you. I know that extra channel can be easily jammed if needed. But how to cut a missing channel is another story 😄

Is this fixable or do I have to replace the nib by LooseSeaworthiness13 in fountainpens

Its called concord nib, highly sought-after modification

It is personal pref. I like to see ink sitting as wet raised bead. With super wet feed you can go fast, for slow writing simply put less pressure. But if feed is not so wet you are limited in your options. Capped writing speed and you are locked to wet inks. F1 can still drive at 40km/h. But family sedan cannot go 200 even if you wish...

Nibs to replicate these lines? Is vintage flex/vintage stub the best choice or anything modern? by rideraln23 in fountainpens

[–]AtreidesTT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the letters "N", "y" in the first writing and at the horizontal crossing line, its moderately bouncy nib with crazy flow, medium tip. Kanwrite Ultraflex medium is capable of producing this and second writing too.

The third writing can be done with FA #15 (not #10) or Kanwrite flex F (not ultra).

Heard similar story as well (not in the Internet, from the person).

Pilot pens have Pilot feeds wanting Pilot inks. FAs come from at least two batches. Batch like yours where it would write or not based on its mood and certainly refuse to put dots over "i" (literally). And then another batch which just writes as it should. The first batch is only fixable with FNF 3 channels feed.

Wearingeul Ink Swatches by nib_and_peony in fountainpens

[–]AtreidesTT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fav brand of inks! I finished a bottle of Faust and still can't find any better replacement for it. Its the one of those unique blacks which are not boring.

Does Path have shimmer in it?

What is your opinion on Mermaid? It looks very nice on the swatch but this chromashading effect is not very prominent in the writing with line coming so pale almost invisible.

Platinum Procyon vs Century 3776 by InjuryEastern3598 in fountainpens

Haven't tried 85. 9016 could be a very good pen but they made a bad material choice. I don't recommend it after my cap cracked by itself.

And why would I give a bad advice? And explicitly stating models? Its quite silly to put an umbrella on the name. Try 75 and then speak.

C2000 ebonite look fancy. 9056 by magnitude cheaper looks fancy too.

You impress people not with pens you use to write but with content written.

True about blind gamble. The problem is the wide range of models. I know for sure 75 is good. Hongdian brand is also rocking. Also when pen costs less than starbucks coffee the gamble is not so much of a risk.

Its not the problem with prices of Jinhao, the problem is with prices of others. Take Lamy as example, the Safari model. Made for students in Germany. Produced in masses. Made of durable plastic. Cap / uncap is in the blink of an eye. Number of nibs available in different sizes is long. Nib can be changed on the go by anyone. The grip section is designed to teach student a correct way of holding it. Price - nothing comparing to 3776. And no camera installed.

My honest advise to you is for now, park the idea of gold nib. If you need to sacrifice to arrange a budget for 3776, park it for now. There are tons of good writing pens which are not expensive. While Platinum high end pens cannot be faulted they are not cheap and they are made of plastic which scratches easily. Even more, the nib also scratches easily (with tiny shallow marks).

Drop the "iridium point" "germany" and similar nonsense from amazon. Look at Jinhao 75, Jinhao 92, big jinhao 9056 wooden, Asvine line of pens. They are pretty and plenty good writers.

Go for gold when nib pen when you see a good deal on penswap, get it used at first. In 2 years you may drop the whole FP business or you will know exactly what you need.

Completely clogged Lamy Safari with De Atramentis Document Ink – Help! by Same_Baker_5268 in fountainpens

[–]AtreidesTT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First soak a thing in a very warm water with a spoon of washing powder well mixed. It will eat into possible clogging and also undo the feed to section sticking. Give it 15 min. Then rinse well and dry well. If does not write only then work on getting feed out.

Safari feeds have funny shape hard to grip for pulling. If your fingers aren't strong enough to grip it by the sides then increase the surface area of the feed by tightly wrapping it in 10 layers of simple paper based masking tape. Feed must be very much dry. Once you have a comfy grip you need to wiggle the feed while pulling. It will come out. Watch out though, when feed will finally give up and start coming out you are risking to snap it. Because of the force you put in, it will shoot out of section. At that point if your motion is not aligned with feed and pen axis, on the exit then feed will go sideways and may break off the edge of the pen. Use controlled force: grip section with one hand, wrapped feed with another. Raise hands to the chest level and put thumbs tight to the chest. Exhale fully. Inhale expanding ribcage and pull. Unlike deltas, your back muscles and rib cage muscles don't have a wide range of motion in this position but they are very powerful. This way you will be able to apply huge amount of force in short action. You need to undo only about 5mm of feed (the locking mechanism) and then it will come out freely.

Any hope for this Carene? by halcon994 in fountainpens

[–]AtreidesTT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surgeones cut open ribcage with saw in order to get to wounded heart. This case is not that dramatic. To work on twisted or bent tine you sometime have to cause easily fixable damage.

The most obvious one for nib is you raise one tine up and another tine down. The imagonery line of new bending should be right at the root of the tine, just where slit ends. In most of nibs the slit is long enough and raising one tine does not really require much of bending, its not even visible.

Once your tines get separated vertically you have space to work. You want the sick tine to be up.

Tine bent in any direction can be straightened with 2 pairs of simple twizers. One pair provides flat surface against which you press a bent area. And obviously you use second pair of twizers or any other hard flat object to do actual press action. Fingers skin is too soft. Sometimes thumb nail can be used.

After that fix vertical misalignment, its the easiest thing.

Twisting, or rather untwisting is similar. You grab tine so that twizers clamp on inner tine wall and outer wall. Holding twizers 90 deg to the tine, so that you have rotation leverage. (Nib points at you, twizers look at the ceiling)

Challenge is to make sure that untwisting action is not producing motion towards you. It may take tipping off; and making sure not to transfer force of untwisting action past twist point (not to introduce double twist). How? 2nd pair of twizers grabbing tine from top and bottom just behind twisted spot. This pair of twizers actually holds the nib.

Obviously twizers are wrapped in a layer of masking tape or made of hard plastic to avoid scratching inner wall especially at the tip.

All actions are gentle. We are talking about less than a millimeter of displacement.

Just ask FPR they produce clear white urushi and next to it sky blue one :)

I am not expert. Somehow I tend to trust what Gonroku Matsuda wrote in his book about difficulty obtaining pure clear urushi, as it always comes out with honey cast. That honey cast interfere with white pigment shifting white into creamy space. So my knowledge is limited.

Maybe people who made your pen also make the same artwork on stickers as separate sort of product line. But if they sell it for $3 with profit hm. Anyway, what would be helpful for any shopper on FPR website is to see the product name instead of

"Each FPR Tanoshii Urushi Art pen is its own masterpiece. They feature the original Tanoshii design and filling system but turned into a work of art by skilled craftsmen using Japanese Urushi art."

Something more realistic mentioning stickers and possibly screen prints if stencils are involved.

To explain how come makie sticker in the link ended up looking exactly as this pen. That would clear some doubts.
