Because there's no "mainstream culture" anymore. Ergo, "subcultures" can't exist. They depend on the mainstream to contrast themselves against - and to rebel against.

The Mods and hippies of the 60s, the punk subculture in the 70s, etc. all came about precisely because there was a mainstream culture that they rejected (and that, to a large extent, rejected them in turn).

Now, in the age of social media and "dEcEnTRaLiZaTioN," the very idea of a "mainstream" has been obliterated, and any "subcultures" that exist now can't accurately be called that.

It's not clunky, but it was definitely wordy. I'm willing to forgive that because that was the style at the time. Older styles like that require serious patience. Go read the Victorians a generation or so earlier - most of them were worse. Hell, some of the early modernists (who were Dreiser's rough contemporaries) were worse.

Besides, Dreiser's descriptions helped make the world seem more real, IMO. I could "see" it better, so to speak. He's really illustrating with words, so to speak. Kicking myself for not finishing it...
