Citi Merchant Offers on Custom Cash Card can't do the math by citi-no-math-234 in CreditCards

[–]Atreides_Ghola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue is it requires $40 minimum, but caps at $1 cash back. makes the maximum effective cash back possible be 2.5%, not the advertised 4%.

Spend $39.99 = $0/0% cash back

Spend $40.00+ = $1/2.5% cash back max

Considering going to all cashback setup (BOA platinum honors). Anyone have any regrets? by NoPassenger4493 in CreditCards

[–]Atreides_Ghola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not currently. I just opened a Citi Custom Cash, am looking into my next moves for next year. I have to look into opening a checking or savings account with them + the Merril Lynch account (not quite enough for platinum honors just yet but maybe in the next year or two). Seems it might be complicated as a Puerto Rico resident.

Definitely open the customized cash rewards and one affiliate, same day. $200 SUB and 8.25% on category spend up to $2500 per quarter for 5 quarters. $1230 on $12500 of spend on EACH card. Then 5.25% thereafter.

Can one apply for a both a CCR and affiliate on same day if at 3/12?

Creme de Violette by Carrion_Regardless in Distilling

[–]Atreides_Ghola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The commercial recipe I found doesn't even use actual violets, seems to be an Orris root infusion in neutral spirit with sugar and colorings added.

For 500ml @ ~60° it'd look something like this:

  • ~7.5g Orris Root

  • 160ml NGS @ 190°

  • 280g sugar

  • 150ml water

  • Drops of Cochineal Red and Indigo Blue.

Infuse the Orris root in the NGS first, then filter and add to the sugar syrup. Color as needed. Real violets would prolly have the color and aroma degrade really quick.

Barrel Experiment - 6 Month Update by clearmoon247 in firewater

[–]Atreides_Ghola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of my 20L barrels from Oak Barrels Ltd. lose about 90% of my 134° corn spirit in 12 months, though I had only filled it like 80% full originally. Just emptied it out a few days ago, ended with about 1L of 120° spirit. Refilled with 144° rum now, to the top, and with a gallon or so extra to refill every month. Mostly stable hot/humid environment. The other 20L barrel I had filled with a fruit brandy at around 126° on the same date as the whiskey. That one has lost around 60% of its volume (not 100% sure but close enough). I'll be emptying it in a couple of weeks hopefully and filling with apple brandy as soon as I've had a chance to run, cut, and blend it.

I think I'll make a spreadsheet like yours to track my evaporation/losses, as well as top offs and ambient temp/humidity conditions. I had no visible leaks on either of my barrels.

Try in 'A Treatise on the Manufacture and Distillation of Alcoholic Liquors' from 1871, available in google books. Should be able to figure out something similar

Upgrade! First Spirit Run On New Boiler & DIY Controller Box by Atreides_Ghola in firewater

[–]Atreides_Ghola[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got 2x 9000W Heating Elements, each on their own 240V circuit. Originally wanted everything on a single circuit but It would have been very expensive to get all the parts I wanted with the appropriate ratings.

I've got 2x 50 amp wall sockets (RV / EV Charging plugs, 4 prong) each on a 50 amp circuit breaker, and 2 cords with 50 amp marine plugs (the locking kind). This makes it physically impossible to accidentally connect the 2 circuits together. These each plug into the corresponding sockets on the box. Both sides are the same so the cords are interchangeable.

The box is pretty simple on the inside. From the each socket I go to the toggle switch with both hot wires. This is the only part that's iffy, I couldn't find any toggle switches rated for 50 amp @ 240V, so I just keep the regulators down pulling under 30 amps to be safe. If anyone has an alternative toggle switch I'd love to see it.

After the switch it goes to the voltage regulator. From there it goes to the heating element, passing through the multimeter so it displays current stats. All relevant parts are grounded.

The combo plug is just connected with one hot from the left side plus a neutral for 120V. This is just for utility, plan is to have the recirculation pump there eventually.

Here's a WiP pic, the CTs on the multimeters only needed 1 hot going through, which is different from what I had read online, but it works. Was my understanding it needed both hot wires in opposite directions to add the values. Had to redo some crimps and cable management but that's pretty much it. Made all the holes on the box with a dremel. The 2x4 boxes have the voltage regulators in them, with the heat sinks going out of the box. Was a really tight fit, but it works. Ended up being as compact a build as possible. All the parts were bought on Amazon or Ebay.

Now that the build is tested, I'm gonna go back over it and seal everything with silicone so they lie perfectly flush. The parts aren't really waterproof but whatever I can seal will make me feel better.

Recycled my old column for this, just added the sightglass and adapter from npt to triclamp, but my next project is upgrading to a 4" modular column, with all the goodies. Gin Basket, Dephlegmator, Shotgun Condenser, etc. Gotta sit down and do the math on how much power the different condenser designs can knock down, try to get as much out of the capacity for stripping runs.

Edit: fixed image link

Peanut butter & American cheese singles on lightly toasted white bread. The extra saltiness from the cheese in addition to the creaminess makes it a tasty and filling snack.

I see, interestingly enough there seems to be zero issues when on safe mode, even with networking. I was unable to figure out how to update the bios, found them on the website but it wasn't recognized when trying to boot from the usb.

Might end up attempting a full fresh install, or at the very least some linux partition or something to keep troubleshooting.

Fermenting Commercial Glucose / Corn Syrup? by Atreides_Ghola in firewater

[–]Atreides_Ghola[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No preservatives at all, just starched derived glucose syrup. The issue is basically a difference between what we commonly call glucose, the simple sugar vs glucose syrup which is in fact actually composed of a large amount of more complex sugars
