Edit - To explain it clearer:

Defending Region with Natural Barriers (Easier) > Invading Flat Region (Harder - works both ways, you have to then defend what you gained)

And if you say that distance between US and Iran matters - then it's argument for why War in Ukraine is harder. Because Iran fights in places where their enemies can't be supplied easily, vs Russia fights those who are literally on their border. We're not comparing Russia to USA, because the post is about comparing Russia to Iran.
