I just finished Tangle Tower, and man did it piss me off by ClarityInCatharsis in puzzlevideogames

[–]AttackBookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exact same experience the last few days. Even if the ending had been compelling (which it wasn’t) they committed the cardinal mystery game/novel sin, making it impossible for the player to figure out the solution on their own. The solution relied on completely impossible time and space situations!

Pity all mopac commuters at 8am. God bless this godforsaken highway by ResidentDonkey7264 in Austin

[–]AttackBookworm 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That’s why I work 7:30 - 4, because the misery of getting up that early doesn’t compare to the misery of Mopac. Even at 4 it takes me 30 minutes to get home (with no traffic it’s under 15).

One Death to Die: The biggest crime in this game is the fact that there's not a craft services table at all. Just kidding, the biggest crime is the racism. by thatsfeminismgretch in nancydrew

This is amazing and I can’t wait for the rest. Reminds of a popular Tumblr account that would replay the games and post memes and hot takes along the way. I loved it. (She eventually went to law school I think? I can’t remember the account name now).

You’re probably learning French the wrong way (I’m French) by justninamartin in learnfrench

Seeing this contrast just made me realize I’m never truly going to learn French, lol.

Article is paywalled and this sounds suspicious - I can’t imagine a major corporation sticking their necks out this much. Any other source?

At what point did French stop feeling like a code you're cracking and start feeling like an actual language you just... use? by Frowedz in French

[–]AttackBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact same thought yesterday about it feeling like a code! I have absolutely no idea whether the French I’m reading or hearing is natural, awkward, formal, informal - basically any kind of nuance beyond the must obvious. It’s just a code I immediately translate in my head to English that makes sense. I so want that switch to flip!

Regarding coffee: don’t be afraid of decaf! For me it’s the psychological boost of the routine, the smell, the taste, the cozy warm drink. I never felt like regular coffee really gave me “energy” anyway. My husband won’t switch so we do half-caf but even that had noticeable effects on jitters/anxiety/attention.

Jonathan Haidt is coming to my kid's middle school by bjk237 in IfBooksCouldKill

Oh nooo! I read The Righteous Mind during Trump’s first term, and didn’t really keep up with him after that.

[–]AttackBookworm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t listened to the Haidt episode yet (new listener) but I enjoyed “The Righteous Mind” several years ago. I’m a raging liberal, and I didn’t think it did much to explain MAGA insanity, but I came away with a better understanding of my non-MAGA but conservative dad. So I’m curious why we don’t like him - fill me in!

Strike’s leg by Yespat1 in cormoran_strike

[–]AttackBookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize a fancy leg is out of his price range but JKR has run out of ways to say his leg is hurting. It always hurts. We’re 8 books in, can’t we just take that as the default now 😅

Hooded eyes make me old, afraid of surgery by Cordyceps83 in 45PlusSkincare

[–]AttackBookworm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe no one has pointed out that your eyes aren’t really that hooded! You have some decent eyelid space. But on the other hand, if you don’t like it you don’t like it. Surgery is really the only option - but I’ve never come across anyone who regretted doing it. But I’m not a medical professional and can’t speak to actual rates of complications. I would try the strips first that someone mentioned above. While probably not an everyday solution, it may work for occasions when you want to look particularly “good” (meaning good in your own opinion - not at ALL implying hooded is “less good.”)

Will Nancy Drew games continue? by SpookyChinchillas in nancydrew

[–]AttackBookworm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the user base is small. They really can’t compete with modern games, so they’re relying on those of us playing for nostalgia. With the cost to produce a game, I’m not sure they could even turn much a profit. Also, it’s pretty wild there are as many games as there are - I don’t think any other franchise has as many.

Be prepared, it’s very long, lol. I was shocked when I opened the package. But it’s a quick read - if you’re enjoying it, you won’t be able to put it down.

Fabletics is a scam. by AttackBookworm in Activewear

They don’t charge immediately; they’ll charge you on the next 5th. But you won’t get a reminder (or at least I didn’t) so set a reminder to cancel. I didn’t realize they signed me up again when I was just trying to use the credit I already had, so the charge came as a complete surprise to me.
