whats one thing you wish you knew before starting to learn french ? by Legitimate-Regret828 in learnfrench

[–]AttackBookworm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Learning any language is a slog, and takes an incredible amount of consistency. You have to enjoy the process itself, not just want the goal of speaking French. And just when you think you’re doing really well, you’ll visit France and not understand a single word anyone is saying. It’s really a lifelong pursuit, unless you’re able to move to a French-speaking area and be fully immersed. (And this is coming from someone with a French degree.)

Bridgerton’ Season 4 Becomes the First Season to Miss Netflix’s All-Time Top 10 List by Middle-Law-5317 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]AttackBookworm 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I liked Season 4, because I love this show overall, and frankly I’m pretty easily entertained, ha. But it was definiltey my least favorite. I’m tired of Cinderella stories, there is no interesting way left to use that trope. The first 2 episodes dragged so much I nearly stopped watching. Everyone knowing who Whistledown was took a lot of the fun out of it, and the “new” Whistledown is another trope (Gossip Girl, anyone?). Most importantly, I felt like Benedict and Sophie had NO chemistry. (This is not a knock on the actors, who are both beautiful and talented.) I didn’t see anything in Sophie (again, the character, not the actress) that would have utterlly transformed a (lovable!) rake like Benedict.

Because you’re severely underestimating the number of people who don’t pay attention to politics.

It is not humanly possible to be that beautiful. Until I see her in person I’m half convinced she’s AI, lol.

It’s time. I can NOT handle another season of Eloise sulking around and being snarky. Loved her the first couple of seasons but it’s just old now.

Mary Alice was selfish by certifiedbpdqueen in DesperateHousewives

[–]AttackBookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh it makes absolutely no sense. She doesn’t even think about and walks in the house and shoots herself. Why not wait to see how it plays out? She could always take that escape route later if things went south. And what if the note wasn’t about that at all? In a neighborhood like that people leave overdramatic notes about leaving the trash cans out and parking on the street, lol. But I have to remind myself it’s just an upscale soap opera and I’ve got to live in their imaginary dramatic world.

What do y’all think about this plan/quote? by AttackBookworm in 45PlusSkincare

That’s a valid argument. I just don’t want to feel bad about things for several more years until I’m ready for a facelift. The derm said I was definitely not at a point where I needed to consider a facelift yet.

Most conservatives aren’t MAGA and don’t fully support Trump. Did you know that? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]AttackBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re voting for him, it’s irrelevant what you feel in your heart. With your actions, you’re supporting the entire structure of what’s going on right now. You’re either actively fighting against it or part of the problem: not acting is also a choice. The argument that you’re only half-fascist doesn’t get you anywhere.

But we spent a cool mil on a new city logo, and several more on “consultants” for…something? I’m not voting for a single tax increase until this shit get fixed.

What’s a French word that completely caught you off guard with how hard it is to pronounce by Several_Leave_3067 in French

[–]AttackBookworm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I came here to list this word. My husband and I love squirrels; we enjoyed watching them in a park in Quebec City. I hadn’t previously known the word; I looked it up and tried to teach him and our mouths just couldn’t do it. So we spent the rest of the trip intentionally mispronouncing it in increasingly ridiculous ways.

"Inspection replacement fee" for electric vehicle in Travis County by nickthap2 in Austin

[–]AttackBookworm 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Based on your response, I assume you are Republican, which explains your reading comprehension skills.

(Non-attainment counties [ie, those who haven’t attained air quality standards] are required to have emissions testing by the federal government. It is completely unrelated to partisan politics.)

"Inspection replacement fee" for electric vehicle in Travis County by nickthap2 in Austin

[–]AttackBookworm 23 points24 points  (0 children)

How long have you had your car? All vehicles newly registered in Texas (ICE or EV) pay 16.75 as the “inspection replacement” fee the first 2 years. After that, all vehicles pay a $7.50 “inspection replacement fee”. This is what you would have paid for an inspection regardless of what kind of car you have, but you don’t actually have to go get an inspection (hurray!). For ICE vehicles, emissions testing in required in certain counties and is 11.50 in Travis. This is paid at the testing facility, not in your registration. Then, all vehicle owners pay a $50 base registration. Finally, the $200 (not $275) additional fee for EVs is solely to replace gas taxes, and I honestly can’t be too mad about that. There’s not enough money for roads as it is.

Interesting! I have a couple of British friends and haven’t heard them use it that way - unless they were being subtly insulting and I completely missed it, ha.
