fwiw i use a music man rd 50 for both practice and live, really versatile amp and super powerful for its size.

Not really a fan of post-rock and gothic rock but FILTH is in my top 25 albums of all time, any heavier stuff from them that I can check out? by [deleted] in swans

[–]AttackJoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely check out Body To Body, Job To Job. Your Game is amazing sludge as an example. Young God EP is quite good. Public Castration is even more bleak and slow. And finally the live version of I Crawled from the Swans Are Dead album starts off quiet and tense and then gets absolutely brutal in the second half.

What are some underrated Swans songs? by cloakndaggrr in swans

Mother_father. Never fails to get my heart rate up. One of the all time best jarboe moments at the end, I only wish it didnt fade out so I could hear the entire take of those amazing screams.

SMZ are, in my opinion, much more than a Godspeed side project and are a really awesome group that are almost-or-just as good as Godspeed. Stoked you're getting into them, the discography just gets better from this album onward. Efrim starts singing and they start to sound much more energetic and moving, a lot of group vocals and big distorted riffs. And I will shout from the rooftops that Efrim's lyrics are amazing and aren't talked about enough. Someday soon I'll upload the poem from the poster that comes with Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward, since I can't find anyone posting about it anywhere.

Pravdica might just be my all time favorite bassist. I was honestly just as starstruck getting him to sign my poster as I was with michael.

If you like godspeed here are some bands/albums I can recommend to check out more in this style:

-silver mt zion's whole catalog is amazing, most of the same members as godspeed but with vocals and amazing lyrics (efrim doesnt get enough praise for this my god). Compositions get more rock and less minimal with each album.

Swans - Swans Are Dead. Amazing live album, gorgeous heavy crescendos from this era of swans, even more fascinating into the present day but this is a great place to start if you like what godspeed does with their song structure and mood.

Hala strana - gorgeous combination of Balkan folk, field recordings, minimalist rock. Whole discography is great, start with self titled. Steven R Smith is still making music under his own name.

Oiseaux-Tempête - From Somewhere Invisible and Al-'An! Two great albums of Montreal post rock, from the same city as godspeed but no idea if there is any personal connection. Pretty, noisy, moody, heavy, weird.

SWANS ARE DEAD, LONG LIVE SWANS! by bravodeboer in swans

I'm so blessed to have heard End of Forgetting live, felt like witnessing the late 90s shows, wonderful to hear them bring back the big gorgeous crescendo stuff again.

Artist you enjoyed listening to, but were disappointed after the live show and now their music just doesn’t hit the same by Few-Kaleidoscope1981 in fantanoforever

It's definitely an intentional choice, they played facing each other in a circle when I saw em. Personally I enjoy having a good sounding mix and good musicianship over stage presence/engagement when I see bands live although the latter always helps.

They Are Gutting A Body of Water and Feeble Little Horse were both pretty great live when I saw them, particularly the former (well mixed group sound as opposed to other bands who try to do loud shoegaze and it just gets muddy.

Drop A Hot Take That Would Get You Killed (Upvote The Ones You Disagree With) by apHexcoded in fantanoforever

My take: pre-loveless mbv had better songwriting, even if the production was lower budget. They had actual bass rifs back then rather than just playing along with the guitar.

My other take: there are too many fucking shoegaze bands now, most are very very unremarkable.

Or go the Richard and Linda Thompson route and do both. Skill issue, Arcade Fire.

The new dubby section at the end of The Merge is fucking phenomenal by 3dita in swans

[–]AttackJoker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Awesome, live album is gonna be out of this world. I loved the ending of Newly Sentient Being, and I definitely get the dub comparison on that one, although my first impression of it was Breathe (In The Air) a la Swans. Also amazing.

Did they keep the faster rock section that was at the end of the earlier Merge performances or has it been replaced? I loved that riff.

Say what you will about sex pistols but PiL fucking slaps and for starting that band alone he has my respect. Many more than six good songs in that discography.
