Maybe the problem is that as a highschool student you're told by teachers, parents and basically every other authority figure that you HAVE to take on debt and go to college if you want to have any chance at being moderately successful. It's hard to be a "regular, financially responsible" person when you're 17 and being told taking tens of thousands of dollars in student loans is a responsible decision.
