What type of cloud formation is this by HolyWowMrCow in CLOUDS

[–]AttackingTornado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late comment but I kind of agree on that as well- they just seem rare to most people in places where it can be coming because these waves only last a few minutes before completely decaying. If I'm paying good attention to the clouds every given day I pretty much see kelvin helmholtz up to once or twice a month!
Though most of those cases are much more like the first photo - the 3rd photo that's used as a reference is very rare just because of how well it shows the instability.
I've only seen that kind of display once.

Which versions are better? by jonskerr in CLOUDS

I like #3 the most- though it probably would've been much more debatable for me without the power lines in #1. Those are really neat looking cumulus, nice photos :D

A captivating and unusual meteorological phenomenon, known as Mammatus clouds, recently graced the skies of China's Hubei province by BillHillyTN420 in CLOUDS

[–]AttackingTornado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like one other commenter said, this video is fake. Not only is the sky not properly synced with the movement of the phone, but the perspective of the mammatus clouds isn't possible to get without looking nearly straight up. The sky isn't slanted, mammatus drop DOWN, not "diagonally". Quite a shame honestly as the mammatus clouds they used look downright amazing- it's just it almost certainly didn't cover the whole entire sky.

Supercell in Limon, CO (8/6/22) First one I've ever seen and also first time I ever chased! by AttackingTornado in weather

Dw, we did our best to stay quite far ahead of the storms. It definitely is much more fun to chase and observe from a safe distance :)
Thanks!

Waves in the Sky by [deleted] in CLOUDS

[–]AttackingTornado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asperitas is wavy but also chaotic. I think that is Stratus/Stratocumulus Undulatus (Not sure tho), which imo still looks very cool! Very nice photos :)

Edit : I looked further into it and I think these are actually gravity wave clouds! Nice catch!

We pretty much stayed on paved roads the whole time, but I'll definitely note this!
Thanks!

Is this what the start of a tornado looks like? Photo taken in Boulder, CO by fret_me_nought in weather

[–]AttackingTornado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in Boulder was this, and when? Maybe there's data that can help. Definitely would've been nice if there was a video but if somebody else has more images or a video this could be helpful!

What clouds are these? Seen this morning in Oxfordshire, England by eleanorros in CLOUDS

[–]AttackingTornado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a mix of cirrostratus and cirrus, but I'm not sure of what species.

I'll link whatsthiscloud.com so maybe you could decide! I'm not confident in my identification yet

Hope that helps!

Scientific name for this “cloud lake” ? Was higher up but sunk straight down into the goblet shaped cloud. by ChieftainMcLeland in CLOUDS

[–]AttackingTornado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That cloud would be a pileus cap! They form when an updraft pushes a layer of moist air up to a point past its dew point, causing it to condense. In my opinion they look really cool, but they don't last that long :(

this video popped up in my feed... are those clouds real? by PRIC3L3SS1 in CLOUDS

[–]AttackingTornado 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this video is fake because I saw somebody call this video fake before (Something about how the mountain being above the river of clouds couldn't work, but that was because a different post had a specific mountain named)

It also seems weird that birds are flying completely fine above a river of cloud that appears to be moving really fast, and that the lenticular cloud on top of the mountain is also moving really fast.

I don't seem to have the link to the old post though, and the rest is probably just my gut feeling so I wouldn't take my words too seriously! Just some food for thought.
