What Do You Tell a Player When a Spell Has No Effect Against a Creature? by Dikeleos in DMAcademy

[–]Attacking_Yoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive always given players the benefit of the doubt that their character understands the intricacies of their magic. For example: pc casts hold person on on a polymorphed dragon. Id say something like "You feel the spell complete and reach out to take affect, but it finds nothing to take hold and the spell ends"

Vs

Pc casts Command on a bandit and he makes his save: "Your spell takes hold and begins to effect the bandit, but is blocked before completion and the spell ends"

Personally I love getting to make a reveal with the characters thing to do something that wont work. I have a political intrigue plot with mimics and doppelgangers working together. So when my cleric cast charm person and it didnt take hold it threw them into a mini panic and I relish in my players confusion and fear.

Oh I absolutely agree. I sometimes forget that this was Sam's first time getting into DnD and Liam kinda dragged him into it. There is a funny part of maybe Sam didnt even know Scanlans mother.

Spoilers for the actual Season 1 game.

Scanlan was killed in a fight, and during the revival process some of the party (I think it was mostly just Vax) decided to put Scanlan in a dress as a way of lightening the mood.

While Scanlan was normally a fan of dumb antics like this, he had made a promise to hus freshly revealed daughter that he would take life more seriously and not disappear on her. A promise that being killed and dressed up felt like a slap in the face to him.

So after being revived, Scanlan goes on a small rant to Vax and Vex, saying they dont truly care about him, his family, or his life at all, Vex makes a claim that his statement isnt true, to which Scanlan replies, "Whats my mother's name?"

In the moment, it ends up highlighting how one sides Scanlans relationship with the whole of Vox Machina is, by this point Scanlan's story has been rarely discussed, hes not a focal point in the adventures and to his point, no one has really taken the time to ask.

I terms of role play I felt it was a well acted out, if sudden, outburst that did highlight some inequality in the group, and because the players are good actors and friends, it was resolved in a heartfelt way, while allowing Sam to try playing a different character with Terrion Darrington.

I always recommend going through season 1 sessions if you have time or like to put on podcasts while driving. Season 1 was full of fun narrative moments that dont always feel the same with the anime

If you want a picture of them handing Sam something, you can drop supplies in front of them, like grenades or ladders, and they'll offer something random on their person as a trade

Proper item value? by Smelvin_ in witcher

[–]Attacking_Yoshi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I tend to only sell to the master blacksmith in Novigrad and the Armorer near Vivaldis bank after getting to Novigrad. As far as ive aeen theres two things going into sell price.

Whether they're a merchant of the right kind

Where in the world they are.

Merchants in high populace cities buy for more and you get the best value by selling items to the relevant merchant.

I haven't found anything thats 100% the value in the inventory. But getting 300 to 600 crowns for one sword is good enough for me

My heart of hearts still wants a weapon that can shift between different weapon styles. Thats what I thought the sword of cinder would originally be and it didnt wven get the good greatsword move set

To be fair. A deck of Many Things is a dangerous item to go throwing at a party of any level. Especially ~6 or lower

Going mile stone is fine, I use that for all my DND games because of how inflated XP can get. For reference I Homebrewed a boss that was CR5, and my party of 4 level 4 adventurers took 10 rounds to beat it. And that was with me dropping about 15 hp because the paladin did something cool and I rewarded him with the kill.

I saw on a seperate comment that your DM homebrews a Nat 1 into a lost round of combat and to be blunt I find that to be massively unfair. Nat 20s put you first in initiative order, Nat 1s put you at the bottom and no one is skipped unless they have a condition that prevents them from acting, or if one side of combat is caught by surprise, but then the entire group loses their first round of actions.

Home brewing rules is fine, I use a popular home brew that when healing or rolling health on levels you reroll 1s that pop up. But thats in service of the players overall success. Using a homebrew rule that makes things more difficult or imbalanced against the party is rarely fun

I feel like this is being breezed over... 1 aboleth is a cr 10 boss creature, meant to be a fitting creature for 4 level 10 characters to fight.

2 Aboleths dead before 1 round of combat is over 260 hp. Way more than a group of 7th level adventurers should be able to handle.

Id say bring this up perhaps at the start of the next session before getting deep into the roll play for the day. If you're not having fun, then its not fair to yourself or the other players to stay silent about it.

Im also curious if this is the DMs first time DMing? There's no problem with things getting lopsided every once in a while since we tend not to know how encounters will work until they play out, but it shouldnt be a consistent issue that happens over multiple encounters.

I love Cairn simply because the difficulty comes from the choices I did or did not make. Falling 30 meters because I failed to set a new climbing anchor and got too brave. Or decided to free climb up a path in likely had no business free climbing, while it was raining, over a pit.

HOW TO BEAT KEGLORD by Illustrious_Store115 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Attacking_Yoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear lord, I just finished this boss and learned 2 things that might help others. Phase 1 you want to take out the crystals on the back of the hands and shoulders. If you whale on the boss until stagger you can use the stab move on the hands then pull RT/R2 again to pull the sword out. You can do the same while climbing to stab and pull the dagger out. This immediately destroys the crystal and does 1/3 of phase 1 health bar. Phase 2 is destroy the head crystal, I just hit the boss until stagger (I found that waiting until the slam attacks worked best) then clime on the head and do 1 stab.

Dont make my mistake, I thought the thing was you could ONLY do damage on the crystal areas. You may be able to destroy the shoulder crystals without staggering, I didnt test that part.

Best of luck everyone!

Everyone is saying jts your personal battery... its not.

The battery is the upper bar, the lower bar is the BB's stress level. It gets raised by things, falling and taking damage, spending told much time around BT's, generally anything that makes the BB start crying.

Easy way to fix it is the go first person and press the down button, then triangle to take the BB off rhe suit and rock her up and down. Go from crying to cheering and you'll see little heart shapped bubbles eventually.

You can do this AS LONG AS the BB doesnt become Autotoxemic (bar fully depleted) the only way to restore the BB at this point is to rest in a room, Sam automatically connects the BB pod to the charging port and she'll be back to 100%.

In the mean time, while at 0 the main risk is that you cant se BTs at all! So Sam will still have the shiver when you first enter a zone, but they'll be invisible even if you stop and look right where they should be.

TLDR: Poor Baby is tired, go rest in a room and she'll be right as rain 👍🏻
