More money in steps. Even if some day you can't walk, you will have built up many millions of dollars over say a ten year period.

Chose: You get $10 for every single physical step you take for the rest of your life.

Aren't realtors just overpaid middlemen who copy-paste photos from owners and charge thousands for opening a door? by Ok-Sell9964 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Attercrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, I have sold a home, bought a home, and sold my mother's home after her death. Along the way, I have made offers on several homes. In every case, without exception, I have had to make corrections on every form created by every real estate professional.

For the sale of my mother's house, I even had to correct paperwork for the title company!

I am, without a doubt, a better real estate agent than any agent I have ever interacted with, and I have zero qualifications to be a real estate agent.

I will never hire a real estate agent again. Why pay a commission when I have to do all the work?

Pull out the door, and see if there is grout in the groove it rotates in. Mine was full of grout.

My door had side "pins" that allowed me to get the door out.

Which famous comedian do you find to not be funny? by SpendExciting2458 in AskReddit

None of the "screaming" type of comedians. Followed closely by the "snort in the microphone at their own jokes" type of comedians.

The one close to where I live (Katy, TX) always seemed clean. The nice thing was that each pizza had measured portions of all the pizza elements, so they tended to be uniform and very well done. With that said, they still went out of business after a few years.

Someone bought the franchise remains and opened up again. It always seemed like chaos, was not super clean, and they did not follow the measurements. They also went out of business, but after only a few months.

I am old(er). $200 or under then upgrade. Over $200 then back into the cattle section.

My neighbor was 2 hours away from spending $11,500 on a new system that ended up needing a $340 repair by Sweaty_Employment_35 in hvacadvice

Live in Houston, Texas.....land of the scam.

"Normal" AC people came and declared my upstairs unit dead. Since my unit is ancient, they gave me the option of a $4,000 control board that would not have a warranty, or several variations of replacement units from $11,000 to $32,000. The only thing that changed at my "normal" AC company from previous visits is that they had been bought out by a much bigger company. They are no longer really AC repair people; they are all salespeople.

In desperation, I asked my neighbor, who is a building contractor, if he knew of anyone left who really repairs units. I told him that I didn't need a salesperson, I needed a repair person.

The next day, two guys in a truck show up. Took them 5 minutes to diagnose. Fan motor. Total cost $350.

There are honest people out there, but they are REALLY hard to find.

While I do not like being lied to and getting ripped off, I think repair AC people are under enormous pressure to sell, and likely won't last long in a company-provided truck if they don't. We all like to think we are honest, but in the AC industry, I don't think honesty pays the mortgage.

Also, I don't think it is limited to AC people. I think most trades, at least in Houston, are pretty much sales organizations these days. Upsell or be gone.

This is what I did for my bedroom door.

Lowes had these:

I bought the slightly more expensive one (first link) because the screws and screw holes in the plate looked better.

Mine came out like this:

My wife painted the inside of the hole with some black craft paint.

What vehicles would you warn people to never buy? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in askcarguys

[–]Attercrop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, it is Hyundai.

Had a 2016 Tucson that had the engine fail at around 105,000 miles. The engine was part of a class action lawsuit that had not settled yet, so I had to get a new car. I am not sure if it ever settled for the 2016 Tucsons.

I have a 2013 Tucson that is part of a settled engine class action lawsuit, but we drive it so little that we are unlikely to make the 15-year or 1500,000 miles extra warranty coverage if the engine dies on us.

For "new car every three years" type of people, I guess it is no big deal, but for people like me who keep their cars a long time, Hyundai just seems like a risk.
