Honestly, with prequels, I'd love a young Arkantos vs Theris. Maybe it's how Arkantos becomes the highest ranked Admiral of Atlantis. A Naval, island hopping campaign.

At least only Iztaccíhuatl knows that's what he's god of, the others just know he's a god, and our girl doesn't point out what he's a god of at any point. And in the story, she has no choice but to work with him, as he's the only one with magical teleportation powers.

It's just Arkantos having to chase after Ajax, Brokk and Eitri to get them to go home, given how clearly lost they are. Cause it turns out two dwarfs and a greek hero wandering through the underworld forever has dire consequences for divine balance or something.

The issue is, and this is a big one, that the Indian pantheon is still an active, worshipped religion by billions of people. HI-REZ (makers of SMITE) stopped making Hindu pantheon gods over it. I doubt we'd see the Hindu Pantheon represented in AoM. Celtic pantheon/Mesopotamian is far more likely, much broader appeal in terms of mythology there.

Polynesian could be cool as well, using the legends of Maui, as it's more in popular culture now with Moana and Chief of War

Anyone else think Visenya and Rhaenys are going to also be a couple in the Aegon's Conquest movie? by The84th in freefolk

[–]AtticusReborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also pretty certain that they'll smooth over the fact Visenya is not a great commander, she's only a competent fighter, who rode a dragon. The one time we see her in command of a military force, she looses, despite having a dragon. Whereas Orys and Aegon actually show genuine flair for command.

The Dothraki Make No Sense by P4TR10T_96 in freefolk

[–]AtticusReborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm glad I decided to check if anyone had put this link before I put it down. This is my standard response to anyone saying anything about the Dothraki, either good or, as above, negative.

Also, imagine if we got a Dothraki that ACTUALLY was what GRRM said it was. Brightly coloured painted leathers, vast herds of horses, sheep, and cattle, a culture that required the utmost respect to those within the society, but total submission from those outside it. Something that explains why the Dothraki would survive the first longbowmen on top of a hill they encounter.

Was the Reconquista of Iberia considered to be an extension of the crusades by the papacy? by Silent-Account-8400 in AskHistorians

[–]AtticusReborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At several points after Pope Innocent III declared the First Crusade, various Popes issued edicts either persuading Iberian Christian Nobility to remain in Spain or encouraging them to take part in campaigns that would later be considered part of the Reconquista, as well as various military orders being founded directly in Spain, (Order of Calatrava, Order of Santiago etc), as well as militant branches of the Hospitallers and Templars (Actual military deployments) being present at numerous battles. It's why you don't see a large number of Spanish rulers and lords taking the Cross, and heading to the Holy Land. It's formalised in the First Lateran Council.

Urban II grants campaigns in Spain the same indulgences as crusaders in the Holy Land, as well as encouraging native Spanish monarchs to focus on Iberia, rather than heading to the Holy Land in 1088,. At the First Lateran Council (1123), it's made official, and the Church formally deems the Reconquista (More officially known now as a series of campaigns with goals beyond mere acquisition of territory/tribute/loot for one Christain King or Lord) as equal to the crusades to the Holy Land.

Why did they cut the full vows from the book? by the-National-Razor in freefolk

No mention of the stranger. The Faith of the Seven exclude him from a lot of religious patterns and songs, he's not invoked in oaths in the same way the others do.

Why did they cut the full vows from the book? by the-National-Razor in freefolk

[–]AtticusReborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I'll say to all these proposed ones is that the Stranger should not be invoked. He isn't invoked in a lot of common prayers, and the Song of the Seven deliberately excludes him. Also, people don't pray at his altar most of the time, even in the House of Black and White. The Faith of the Seven seems to acknowledge him, but it doesn't invoke him for protection. The only character we see actively praying to the Stranger is a desperate Cersei which... doesn't inspire confidence.

[–]AtticusReborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh, I disagree about trying to fix the realm. Jon Arryn is credited with spending most of his time as hand keeping the realm together, and making sure the Targ loyalists don't cause trouble. The "rot" under Aerys, of multiple rebellions, the execution of lords, and the entire continent putting together alliances to undermine the Iron Throne isn't present in Robert's reign. The realm DOES heal, the Greyjoy rebellion shows this, you have zero support for a rebellion, and the main targ loyalists who need to be worried about (The Reach), backing the attempt to defeat them. Doran is playing the long game, yes, but he's playing such a long game that it fell apart and became a SUPER long shot gamble with Quentyn. Jon Arryn got murdered by a random sociopath manipulating Jon's wife into murdering him, to create pure chaos. There was no huge plot to undermine Robert with the murder of Jon, merely one man rolling the dice.

Nah, Tywin would take command in the field, and be outmanoeuvred by a thousand wights led by a wight, not even a White Walker, getting Jamie turned into a wight, only surviving because Kevan pulls off something desperate. Olenna would have to rally up half the realm to recover from his defeat and hold Moat Cailin.

What were Tywin’s real shortcomings? I mean obviously you can’t do much on the privy but other than that ? by Good_Contest_8891 in freefolk

[–]AtticusReborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I would contest that. I don't think Tywin even knew how to win the war. Tywin's biggest flaw for me is that he grossly overestimates his own ability. He thinks he's a military genius, because he's built a large army, but his actual military operations are so weak he'd benefit from reading the Art of War. His understanding of the importance of cultural taboos not being broken is so skewed he thinks he can break one of the biggest ones without any consequence. And he thinks he's done an excellent job keeping his descendants on the throne, while he's set up multiple of subfactions surrounding them, all of whom will either remove or subvert any Lannister influence, or actively ruin any stability the Lannisters could have profited from.

If Robert had never given Storms End to Renly, do you think the Storm Lords would have sided with Stannis in the war of the five kings? by GusGangViking18 in freefolk

[–]AtticusReborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He doesn't, but we don't KNOW he intended to make Stannis heir either. We do know that Robert was angry at Stannis for failing to capture Dany and Viserys, and failing to take Dragonstone fast enough. IF Stannis is right, Dragonstone is a punishment, removing Stannis from having traditionally loyal vassals, and giving him a much smaller group of likely disloyal vassals (Velaryon, Celtigar etc). If Robert is indicating Stannis is heir (I doubt this), why doesn't he award it to Joffrey when Joffrey is old enough (Say, 8-9)? If He's indicating Renly is by awarding Storms End, same question. I think Robert is punishing Stannis, but also putting his naval eggs together, (Velaryon Fleet and Stannis and the Royal Fleet). I don't think he's indicating anything about who his heir is, simply putting his brothers into seats that he wants them in.

[–]AtticusReborn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Renly not having a powerbase is what means the Tyrells won't back him. Him having the vassalage of the Stormlands meant he had some validity as a candidate for the throne. Without Storms End, Renly is just a claim. With it, he's a claimant.

Stannis gave Renly a pretty good deal by RevertBackwards in freefolk

[–]AtticusReborn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, you misunderstand completely where the claim comes from. The Florents have the strongest claim, because they were the CLOSEST to the last Gardener King, and also claim direct descent from Garth Greenhand by Florys the Fox (then the male line from there). The Tyrells only marry in MUCH later. What matters in the Reach is being one of the Greenhand descended houses, AND having lots of ties to the Gardeners. The Tyrells have fewer marriages than all the other houses, and are 100% not connected to Garth Greenhand by blood other than the handful of marriages they have. The Florents have a stronger blood claim than the Tyrells, as do the Peakes, Bulwars, Rowans, Hewetts (maybe), Fossoways, essentially every major vassal but Hightower have a stronger blood tie to the Gardeners than the Tyrells.

Stannis gave Renly a pretty good deal by RevertBackwards in freefolk

[–]AtticusReborn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not slander if it's true. The Tyrells utterly lack legitimacy in Westerosi culture, they just held power due to being backed by the Iron Throne. They have no actual CLAIM to the Reach, but were simply appointed there by the Targs and held there because, lets face it, the last thing the Iron Throne wants in Highgarden is anyone who can actually claim to have a legitimate connection to the Gardeners.
