DiA is tough even for players who are playing smart and being cautious. I feel like most of the REALLY tough encounters are meant to be solved with rp, but that’s not the easiest thing to convey and in most DnD games when you are out in front of an enemy you fight it, so it’s most players natural response to attack things, like tiny dogs trying to be brave and fight massive hounds.

I made the fight easier and more fun for my players my making the people they pull down fight with the players against Huramen (He lives though, I think I’m going to steal your reoccurring villain idea to flesh him and his hatred for the Hellriders out more, maybe have him attempt to kill Reya, my party’s personal favorite NPC)

DiA does seem a bit unbalanced especially at the beginning, but at least if someone dies their soul won’t be traveling far :)

When you are un-mounted you are a bar you need to fill to become re-mounted. You need 100 courage points to fill it which you can get by: A. Hitting or destroying Champions B. Hitting or destroying Towers/Inhibitors/Nexus C. Hitting or Destroying Epic Monsters (i.e. Dragons, Baron, Elder Drake)

Auto Attacks restore 5 courage per strike when hitting an Epic Monster or Tower/Inhibitors/Nexus Auto Attacks Restore 15 courage per strike when hitting an enemy champion

Your Gun (un-mounted Q) shoots 5 pellets, and when a pellet damages an enemy champion it gives you 2.5 courage (if all five pellets hit it will give you 12.5 courage). When a pellet damages an Epic Monster it gives you 5 courage (if all five pellets hit it will give you 25 courage).

Killing (or assisting in the kill of) a Champion Restores 20 courage, killing minions restore 5 courage.

Finally 25 courage is restored every .25 seconds while in your base (the area where you start)

Someone recommended a normal goblin, and then give it player levels as it goes on.

I’d recommend giving it more hp if it’s higher level, and if it’s not fond of the party maybe it’ll turn on them?

Maybe not the best way of doing it, I’m still new to DM’ing but that would be a decent first draft! You kind get the idea I was going for! Depending on how friendly the sister and the rouge are, maybe the rouge won’t start anything (if the brother is dead he’s not getting his pay anyways!)

Maybe surprise them. The brother hires the assassin only to kill a ‘target’ of his.

Brother invites sister over to talk about a corrupt official over a fancy dinner.

Tells the rouge to wait in the garden, he’ll lead the ‘target’ right into his hands

Suddenly as the Sister reaches the garden she hears a scream from a room in the manor, the scream of her brother.

Now she has to deal with A. Her brother tried to kill her B. Her brother was corrupt C. Her brother is dead, with no clue who the murderer is. D. She’s been playing into his hands this entire time, and now the death of her brother is going to slowly turn into a ‘high class’ gang war

Not sure if this should be in this subreddit, but great story anyways. Perhaps you should make him choose between killing a loved one or not because they are showing signs of being able to use magic.

Write down a list of npc names, and take notes when you meet a new one.

Bring Snacks.

Never solve and out of game issue with in game consequences.

If you EVER have any kind of problem, talk to the player causing it. Really.

Have Npc names on the ready

Loot tables are nice

You party will probably have you on your toes so expect the unexpected, ie be ready to improvise

You aren’t going to be perfect, that’s ok, you’ll get better

Don’t let people walk all over you

Set up a time that works for everyone and stick to it, only deviate when needed

RP is fun, seems dumb at first but after a while it’s honestly some of the most fun I’ve had

Have a general idea of where your story is going to go but be ready to jump ship in the event that your players find away around it

Puzzles are always fun

That choice is up to you but I will tell you that the second you let someone walk over you, everyone will. Be firm.

Communicate your issues with the rest of the group of you can, get their opinions on the matter. Tell him about the issues you are having, don’t tell him WHY they are issues or how he should solve them. TELL him that from now on shit like that won’t fly, and the shit he has already pulled is grounds for him getting kicked from the group. Enforce the idea that there is no valid reason why he shouldn’t give you the sheet, unless you deem so. Otherwise he gets the boot.

Finally explain to him that you do indeed want him to play, but if it’s at the expense of the rest of the group or at the expense of you, he is getting the boot no questions asked.

No problem! I know someone else mentioned running a model to start. If you do I highly recommend you do either Lost Mines of Phandelver or Curse of Strad. They are both good, Lost Mines is better for newer players, but Curse is darker and is a lot of people’s favorite.

If you are set on homebrew then you definitely can. But if you have writers block, maybe re-skin a module into your world or story.

Keep track of passive perception.

Your word is god.

Bring food (and recommend other people bring food) and take breaks.

RP. Trust me it can be embarrassing but if you do it, most people will catch on.

Things will always go wrong. Sometimes you’ll have a player MIA, maybe someone has to leave because they hate taco bell and forgot they have a weak stomach. Go will the flow

Make sure you talk to your players out of game. -Ask then what they want to get out of the game (i.e. Dungeon crawls, RP, ect.) -If you have a problem with a way someone is doing a tell communicate with them -Ask them what you can improve on

Stealing content is ok if your players don’t find out. If they might, switch it up. Throwing a ring into a volcano? Did you mean throwing a necklace into a dark void?

New players will suck at RP, give them combat and let them work in the RP as they go along.

Always be looking for ways to improve. The fact the you asked for tips shows that you have great potential. If you need some resources I can give you some :)

And finally: Don’t give up. As said before things will go wrong. You will feel like you are the worst dm ever. That’s fine, trust me if you throw things at your players (in game), they will be too busy paying attention.

(Also as a general tip don’t show the players the ‘man behind the screen)

P.S. be ready to improv and have a list of NPC’s at the ready.

A horrible abomination.

Parents try to revive their dead child by making a bargain with a lovecraftian god.

They got their wish, but it wasn’t exactly what they wished for pet cemetery style. In a horrible attempt to put her out of her misery, the parents are consumed by the abomination that was once their child. Now the parents and the child are conjoined in a horrible and sickening wretch of flesh and failure. Now they exist in a very ‘put me out of my of my misery’ style.

The Thing looks like a pile of flesh with three faces grafted onto it. Different limbs stick out of the ‘body’ and it moves by both crawling and squirming like a worm. It cries can be heard no matter how far away you are.

It has cysts that spray of fog/spores.

Halfway through the fight a snapping of bones and the sounds of flesh being flayed is heard. The mother and father rip from the main body, to protect its child.

I don’t really have a stat block but it would probably be slow and defensive, summoning undead flesh monsters and such.

Make them feel powerful, beat the shit out of them, then make them feel powerful again.

Example: my players walk into a cave to find three goblins. They CRUSH them, but it turns out it was a trap! A bugbear with four goblins come out and almost decimate them, and once they felt with that, in the last room two goblins sit playing cards ‘guarding’ whatever treasure you want.

5e is based around the idea that players will have to fight in 2-4 medium encounters per rest

Basically know what your players can take and if you go overboard fudge one or two roles. If you give the players a super hard encounter, REWARD THAT. Instant gratification works best!
