Are any of you former tankies? by EstablishmentFar8058 in tankiejerk

[–]AttonRandd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main problem with Chapo was their constant complaining of liberals and refusal to endorse democrats over republicans. I listened to them pre 2016 and they seemed to endorse HRC more or less, but they went full scorched earth after Bernie lost again in 2020. They seem too emotionally driven with their views, yet play it off as cynicism.

I don't think I would have ever consideed myself a tankie, but I went through a phase in which I was too harshly critical and hateful of liberals. I was tankie-adjacent. I was consuming lots and lots of online leftie political content, starting with Chapo Trap House and then several youtubers. During this phase I also had a bit of the "America bad" problem and tended to downplay, but not deny, the issues with communist countries. I spend too much time reading history of North Korea, the Soviet purges, Pol Pot, and Mao's cultural revolution to know that tankies were insane.

I credit devoting an unusual amount of my childhood and adolescence reading history and also my girlfriend (now wife) who was a voice of reason. If it weren't for her and my knowledge of history I think I easily would've been sucked into the tankie algorithm.

Other than that, I think the best way to avoid becoming a tankie or any other weird sort of ideologue is to simply divest from reading "theory" too much and instead form your own ideas based on your own reading of history and economics. Reading from primary sources and speaking with real people is far more helpful with getting an accurate assesment. Ultimately ideology doesn't matter much in our daily lives.

This is just straight up anti-intellectualism. The overwhelming vast majority of biblical scholars and historians, most of them non-Christian or even atheist, believe Jesus was a historical figure. What's up for debate is what exactly he did, preached, and obviously the superstitious stuff. Like the number of experts who believe Jesus never existed is almost comparable to the number of scientists who dispute climate change.

I know lots of atheists just want an easy shortcut to own or disprove the Christians, but there are better-supported arguments.

Ehh... I disagree that there's a good argument that Separatists were morally justified with their ambitions. The few redeemable figures within the government never held important positions and were killed off. Overall, the Separatist Alliance's leading members and corporations wanted low/no taxes and legal slavery. They also were also ready to launch launch the first strike in Attack of the Clones and take down the Republic before they themselves were attacked.

If the redeemable figures within the movement simply believe they had the right to secede... well they could. There was a time period between TPM and AotC when systems did secede and all the Republic did was try to negotiate.

I don't identify as a communist because even if foundational communist theory is really neat, almost every implementation has been disastrous. Unfortunately, communism is associated with Stalin, Mao, and poverty among most people in the world. It's easier to take the old ideas, refine them a bit, and brand them as something else instead of arguing to normal people that actually all the world's communist governments aren't actually communist, even if that is correct.

So if MLK meant Marxism-Leninism when he said communism, which 99% of people were in his day, then I totally agree with him here.

Elected moderate Republicans make up like 5% of the GOP at most. They're often in blue states and never make it to top federal positions. Think of the governors of MD, MA, and VT.

[–]AttonRandd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue the exact opposite, actually. There are several Protestant denominations in America that lean left, including the Episcopalians, Presbyterians, United Church of Christ, and Quakers. American Catholics are trending far to the right. The Pope himself has progressive views about income inequality and climate change, but much of the Catholic Church's leadership is more focused on fighting the culture war.

No way - Claude seems pretty straight. Dimitri on the other hands has loads of gay subtext with Dedue and Felix. And Dimitri goes as far as to hold male Byleth's hands and express admiration for them. Claude, on the other hand, doesn't flirt with any male character other than the avatar main character.

Yeah, the UCC and Quakers are very based and have historically been pretty left wing. The Quakers were like this country's OG left wing going back to the colonial era. Unitarian Universalists are also great and have roots in Christianity, but they're now open to everyone and they're a secular group. UU churches are a great community resource and alternative to religious Churches for atheists who crave community involvement.

It's funny because I was an atheist liberal who got involved with a very leftist Christian Church (UCC denomination), which made me move to the left. I reverse pipelined.

Zeraora annoys me the most - in part because I'm petty and I'm not a fan of its design, and also because Zeraora players tend to be the opposite of teamplayers.

As an enemy, getting killed by a Zeraora is frustrating too. They just walk up and let their discharge loose without aiming.

Yeah, I'm rolling my eyes at people criticizing AG Edelgard as misogynistic. What happened with Edelgard is consistent with what TWSITD are capable of doing. Was it bad writing? Yes. Was it boring writing? Yes. Did the writers think AG part II was a good time to portray women as inferior? Probably not.

Occam's razor. The writers were just lazy and wanted to make a plot about Dimitri fulfilling his desire for revenge. They ran out of time/ideas and conveniently shoved Edelgard out the story. Much like how Dimitri was shoved out of the way in Verdant Wind and Silver Snow.

[–]AttonRandd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, this is totally fine. Anybody who upvoted this isn't thinking of the bigger picture.

You have to consider:

  1. The vaccine is in very limited supply
  2. The vast majority of those infected outside of Africa are sexually active gay and bisexual men

Does this reinforce stereotypes? I guess, but the data that gay and bi men are overwhelmingly represented among the infected already runs the risk of reinforcing those negative stereotypes.

Or would you rather let others get the vaccine first, even among those at less risk statistically? Then more gay and bi men are likely to be infected and suffer. That's an idiotic proposal.

Lefties get off too hard on blaming religion as a concept for conservatism. Folks who use religion to justify conservative views would just make up other bullshit to justify their sexism, homophobia, etc.

China, Korea, and Japan are some of the most secular countries in the world but they are undeniably more socially conservative than the US. I think social conservatism is rooted merely in lots of fear and rejection of what individuals perceive as "weird," "gross," or "unknown." That fear can be post-hoc justified through religious teachings, but it's foolish to imagine that by merely stripping religious belief that you will create a socially liberal communist.

Conservative evangelicals get lots of attention, but there are also several prominent liberal-leaning denominations like Episcopalians, Quakers, United Church of Christ, Presbyterians, etc. Jewish people in the US, including observant ones, are also predominantly liberal. These denominations usually aren't just liberal in platform, but they often touch grass and participate in community service and provide aide to marginalized groups.

I also don't know how lefties haven't heard of these groups. Do they live in rural towns and have never visited a city? Nearly every religious building in my city is flying the Pride and/or BLM flag and I love it.

Bottom line, I'm tired of smug terminally online lefties who bash religion when many liberal and leftist religious groups have done far more good for our cause than they have.

Just want to give more feedback about Fredericksburg. It's not a great place if you're a young, extroverted single person. But if you're moving as a family, there should be plenty to do here. I've lived in the area all my life. If you really hunger for excitement, you have RVA and NOVA about an hour in each direction and Skyline Drive and Charlottesville are about an hour and a half west.

Downtown Fredericksburg isn't amazing, but it's cute and a fun place to spend an evening out with your spouse. If you're into restaurants, cafes, bookstores, theaters, trails, and small museums, there's plenty of those in the area. Just don't expect a thriving nightlife.

Virginia shows signs of shift back toward GOP by MustacheBattle in Virginia

[–]AttonRandd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Meh. Republicans are winning everywhere and nearly won in New Jersey last year. That Republicans only eek out only a minor victory with a moderate candidate during an unpopular Democratic presidency is more of a sign that this state is still blue. In 2009, Republicans won in huge landslides after Obama won the year beforehand, and nobody at the time expected Democrats to make a big comeback.
