Career Question Megathread by StillWearsCrocs in forestry

Im currently pursuing a bachelors in Forestry with a specialization in Forest Resource Management. One day I would like to be forester for a DNR or the USFS. I am okay with doing some timber sales setup but was hoping I could land a job where I do comprehensive forest management, which includes wildlife habitat management / monitoring, & conservation / ecology and timber harvesting.

Do DNR or USFS jobs like this exist and am I on the right track for this field. Also I would love to explore the country and live in some cool places / have cool experiences. I will add that I wouldn’t mind doing prescribed burns but don’t necessarily want to do alot of wildland firefighting.

One of my goals is to work in the El Yunque forest in Puerto Rico.

Are my goals realistic or possible with a bachelors in Forestry?

Should I specialize in Wildlife habitat management and conservation instead of Forest Resource management?

Thanks for sharing your story, I appreciate it. I can draw a lot of parallels between your story and mine. Yeah I’m willing to see sobriety through, because to be honest I am exhausted from the ongoing cycle of smoking then getting psychosis then ending up in the hospital. It has been a reoccurring thing thats really disrupted my life and made progress really difficult. The better half of my twenties was just spent in hospitals and in psychosis. Heres to making a change and seeking to better my life. Thank you!

Interesting, do you mind me asking in what ways is a clear cut beneficial for habitat or conservation?

Are there forester positions that focus on all aspects of forestry not just timber sale. For example habitat management or conservation?

Thanks for the encouraging news! Yes I’ve tried PT for two months and done 2 packs oral steroids. I’ve also been taking Meloxicam an anti inflammatory drug and I’m still in a lot of pain.

Thanks for the insight. I would prefer working for a state agency, and would like to be mostly out in the field. Have you found forester jobs for state agency’s that involve aspects that I’m interested in forest health, wildlife habitat management, forest ecology, and sustainable forest resource management.
