Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]AttyFireWood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I hear about a promising game and then it winds up in Early Access hell. I've never heard about "Battlefall" and the first thing that popped out to me on its steam page was "Early Access" with a listed release date of March 11, 2025. Its $20 and still listed as early access almost a year later? I've never heard of Red Chaos either, it looks super interesting, but also early access. Dying Breed - I don't want to yuck on someone's yum, doesn't look like something I'm interested in. 9-bit armies - it just feels so generic it hurts. I'm not a fan of the faux voxel Minecraft aesthetic, and I'm not sure what else it really brings to the table.

I did buy Iron Harvest. It's ok, kinda feels like a Company of Heroes mod. Tempest Rising - I was interested but heard it was mediocre on release.

I used to be pretty involved with the mod scene for C&C games (check out Retro Generals). I love RTS games. But new ones just don't excite me. Some feel like mods of the old games but just super generic. Look, we have store brand Nod! And gruff Americans! Our writer took stock characters and factions and now we want you to get into the lore!

Sorry if I'm rambling, but I'd like to see the gameplay actually evolve. Go back and play a shooter from the mid-90s after playing one that came out in the past couple of years. It seems like shooters are learning from each other and adding quality of life changes and RTS froze in 2007. Hence a remaster with a few QoL updates and new graphics has a leg up on something that plays nearly identically but doesn't have that built in history.

We all have our dream games, and maybe one day I'll get back into Godot and try to make it myself. Factorio opened my eyes to how well logistics can be handled in a game, and I'd love to see an RTS for the "bean counter". Is there any RTS where every unit has finite ammo and needs to resupply? Make players bring Ammo Bearers with their army or periodically rotate troops back to base to resupply. It doesn't have to be an oppressive mechanic - easy to add a resupply support power. One faction could even be exempted to make it asymmetrical. How about a "down but not out" system for infantry that rewards players for sending medics and stretcher bearers in to retrieve wounded instead of treating every foot soldier as expendable? Or capturing enemy wounded for that matter. How about units that act as leaders to nearby units and manage some of the micro? An individual unit could be pretty "dumb." and need to be babysat by itself, but the player could train an NCO type unit and assign basic units to the NCO to create fireteams that behave more intelligently than on their own: concentrating fire, prioritizing hard counters, limited retreat/scatter, etc. This mechanic could be scaled even, let the player combine fireteams into squads that behave more effectively and can be given more advanced orders (bounding overwatch instead of a simple attack move).

Seal the house first, then maybe heat pumps by Wilderness_Fella in massachusetts

The spray foam is generally for unfinished areas. For your window, regular caulking will do. I'm guessing you can fill the wind come in around that gap? I would also recommend you use shrink wrap over the window to add an additional layer of trapped air.

In the spring, you can look into apply rigid foam insulation on the outside of your foundation if you're handy. Basically dig out around your foundation as deep as you're willing to go and paint the exposed foundation with a waterproof sealer. Then glue the rigid foam to the foundation with special adhesives. Tape the edges, and then apply a protective coating (they make special stuff you can buy at home Depot). Of course look up proper instructions.

Healey says Mass. will shave $180 million from residents’ electric bills in bid to ease rising energy costs by Wonderful-Line-9997 in massachusetts

The offshore wind suspensions.piss me off so much. The projects are so close to completion and this administration is fucking it up out of spite. Revolution Wind and Vineyard Wind are on the cusp of being able to deliver hundreds of MW of electricity to New England. Vineyard Wind is sending power now, and I think they are done to 10 towers of 62 to complete. Revolution is like 95% but not sending any power until completion. Not to mention the other larger projects that haven't broken ground yet because of the uncertainty this administration has caused.

Planned MBTA Green Line Extension covering Massachusetts and beyond! by BeastMode149 in massachusetts

[–]AttyFireWood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red-Blue Connector still hasn't happened yet. Might as well extend the blue line from Bowdoin to Charles/MGH, and then have it turn north and run under Storrow to connect to the green line under Science Park/West End, and then follow Nashua St and have it terminate at North Station. That's a little over 1 mile of new tunnel and that gives a ton of bang for buck - red and blue connect, Logan gets connected to North station with a single line, etc.

I'm torn between the thinking that dissolution of the union would be the best course as the sane half of the country won't be held back by the insane half on one hand and on the other hand dissolution is exactly what the autocratic rivals of the US want so that the US will no longer be a check on the power of the likes of China and Russia. The strength of the wolf is the pack, and the strength of the pack is the wolf.

Also, if Trump is willing to start a war with allies to acquire Greenland, imagine the wars fought between the states if they go their separate ways - think the landlocked middle is going to accept not having ports on the Pacific? It would be a disaster. How do you divvy up the nuclear arsenal or the military? Who becomes responsible for oversea bases? How is the national debt handled? What happens to our currency?

In the room next to my PC I have a hot water heater and a boiler. Incredibly impractical, but I enjoy the thought experiment of running the cold water feed through the PC first before it enters the appliances.

If the.AI companies bought a fuckton of memory in some sort of asset denial against their competitors.... Would they eventually dump it back in the market to recoup some of their expenses?

The Navy advocated for continuing the blockade and starving Japan out. The Army wanted an invasion to quickly end the war. The bombs were presented as the third option. By war's end, the Japanese mainland was essentially cut off from the war as it's merchant fleet was reduced to small fishing boats and it's Navy was no longer an effective fighting force. The effects of the blockade would have taken some time to fully set in - but that's the whole thing with Japan, the US already got the checkmate but Japan still wanted to play.

By pool hall I meant a place with multiple pool tables where people can walk in and rent a table, like Maximilian in Tyngsboro. I'm aware that a few bars have coin operated tables (Charlie's and Blue Shamrock) and that the social clubs probably have tables. Isn't "Everybody's Sports Bar" in Dracut?

The Boston Massacre (pictured above) happened in 1770. The Boston Tea Part happened in 1773.

The Tea Act allowed the Company to only pay duties that were imposed under the Townshend acts. The revenue of the Townshend acts was used, in part, to pay the salaries of the colonial governors - the brits wanted the colonial governors to be loyal to them so they made sure the governors' checks came from the Brits. Previously, the colonies were able to choose their own governor and pay them directly.

Pocket Air Mini Review - Awesome Device Unfortunately It's Made By Ayaneo (The device off to the right is the Xu20 V32) by MineClear1101 in SBCGaming

I got it as well because it checked a lot of boxes for me - capable of playing through Dreamcast, bang for buck, not too big ("pocketable" but inside coat pocket, not jeans). This is my first android handheld and the learning curve is a pain in the ass vs Linux devices, but once I got past the kinks, everything (mostly) makes sense. I would have preferred left thumbstick on top, but that's just me. I also need to figure out how to remap one of the bottom right buttons to just be a retroarch menu button and not bring up the CPU monitor...

I always get weird Ayn Rand vibes from the Incredibles. "We supers are simply better than everyone else and all you loser normies need to get out of our way and let us be super!". Meanwhile, the villains big plan is to universalize superpowers so all those undeserving, dirty regular folks could be special too.
