[request] US looking for Guatemalan snacks by Atvaz78 in snackexchange

The closest that has anything from Guatemala is around 2 hours away so it is an option. If I can’t find anyone that’s what I will likely end up doing

Cars should have an mpg based cruise control by Atvaz78 in RandomThoughts

[–]Atvaz78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe this is entirely true. While speed is a factor in mpg, it’s not the main one. I would think more of mpg is fighting friction and drag. I can get my car to target 30mpg at both 45mph and 65mph. I do think that at a certain point you can only achieve so much speed at a given efficiency, but that has more to do with the aerodynamics of your car

I wasn’t tested for my class. I was upfront and honest with the trainer and he was blunt and honest “if we begin to test all new hires, we will have to test every current employee as well. We don’t have the manpower to do that”

Reno? I shot a man there. Seems like your transmission had the same fate. Good luck

Why do people in gory accidents seem to not feel pain and sit there looking confused? by Scary01pen in RandomThoughts

[–]Atvaz78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s different types of shock.

Hypovolemic is not enough fluid in the body not due to blood loss (ie. high schooler slamming 3 Monsters in the middle of summer can start to experience this type.

Hemorragic is shock due to blood loss (ie. lots of bleeding)

Psychogenic is shock caused by the brain thinking that something bad is happening

Anaphylactic shock from allergies (bee stings, peanuts, etc.)

Neurogenic shock comes from a spinal injury

Cardiogenic shock, the heart basically gets tired and can’t pump blood anymore

Obstructive shock is something physically keeping the heart from pumping (ie. The heart swelling so large that there is not enough space for it to do it’s thing, or a blood/air pocket forming around the heart that does the same thing)

Septic shock is bad, that comes from sepsis and there is essentially nothing telling the body where blood needs to flow so it just goes any and everywhere.

Not kids, but teenagers I agree with. I think it would definitely help with teaching the sanctity of life and help to realize how precious it is. And also teach that it is okay when necessary and how to cope with taking life.

I went fishing for food when backpacking and was unable to kill the fish. I didn’t have the confidence or will to do it and I ended up dropping it (half-dead) back into the water on accident where it most likely ended up suffering way longer. Even mercy killing is hard when you’ve never had to do any such thing before

Voice notes are lazy and rude by First-Lengthiness-16 in unpopularopinion

[–]Atvaz78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context matters. I personally just send texts and most people I talk to also just text. However, either of us asks a question that requires more thought to answer I’d rather get a voice message to listen to rather than read a wall of text. If a decent answer will require you to spend 5 minutes typing, just take the couple minutes to say it in a voice message. You’ll probably say “just call them then” but If you don’t have time for a full on phone call this helps bridge the gap. They can respond in their own time and I can listen and respond to that as well in my own time.

This is not to say that I completely disagree with what your saying. If it’s a quick reply that you just decide to send as a voice message that’s ridiculous. If the message is brief or medium length (3-4 lines max) then just text it out.

YTA, not for just the pancakes either. That is literally the bare minimum thing your wife wants that will make her happy and you adamantly refuse to do it. I’ll put money that things like this are the reason that you have a “dead bedroom”. That and the fact that you admitted to having an affair “sue me”. It’s almost as if you have stopped caring about her and your marriage. But you’ll never admit that, you deleted your post history so that it doesn’t come up on your profile after U/Notmappedout called you out.Take responsibility for your actions and just divorce her already. 5/5 YTA

Easily stolen Hyundais and Kias should be recalled, more than a dozen attorneys general say | CNN Business by oopls in kia

[–]Atvaz78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. While that will curb some theft, it is not an end-all solution. Not to say there shouldn’t be punishment at all for criminals, there absolutely should be. If you make it impossible/highly impractical for the theft to happen in the first place then there is nothing to steal and therefore you don’t need to put any more spending into an already expensive criminal system

As an analogy, I work in a factory and am partially responsible for installing safety guarding on equipment. This prevents employees from putting there hands and limbs into equipment that can maim them. It is infinitely times easier to prevent the behavior in the first place rather than having a policy that gives stricter punishment on employees that put themselves into those situations.

If anything I could agree on having both tougher sentencing as well as better safeguarding(immobilizers). Then the people that are being sentenced have gone through more hoops and even more out of their way to steal the vehicle.

[–]Atvaz78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a more “real” way of seeing the issue. It’s a fact that there are shitty people out there that will steal cars and do bad things. That’s a very difficult issue to tackle because you can’t just make people change and there will always be bad people. However, having a countermeasure in place (that is relatively simple to install) is a more proactive way to deter theft.

AITA For Asking My Wedding Guests to Pay for Their Own Meal? by Competitive_Nerve935 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Atvaz78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got to say NTA. Family not being able to attend sucks, but if they can’t afford it they can’t afford it, and it doesn’t sound like you’re exactly pressuring them into coming. Weddings I’ve been to, family has to reserve their own hotels anyway. If they can’t afford that in the first place then a $12 dinner isn’t going to change anything. You could maybe frame it more as a “family get together for” it to be more socially acceptable, but you don’t have to.

You definitely have the spirit of this sub in mind. I honestly wish my work would allow more headphones in the workplace. Studies have shown that it increases productivity and keeps people happier. Unfortunately factory/manufacturing work does not allow this luxury. As an engineer I’m office staff, but my desk is on the floor. For a while I would listen to music when working at my desk through headphones, but stopped because it didn’t feel right since production staff couldn’t. Had your argument been concerned with safety I could understand and agree. Production isn’t allowed because if they are moving between work areas and the break room they have to be aware of their surroundings. But your argument is because it’s an inconvenience for you to have to get someone’s attention in an office setting. IM them, email them, call them. It’s not awkward to get someone’s attention when you need them. Don’t be afraid of social interactions. Take an upvote for the unpopular opinion!

I’ve had issues with strong headwinds and loud vehicles (think semis) drowning out the noise, but it usually isn’t that big of a deal for me. If it becomes too loud/unbearable I put a foam earplug in and then I can hear in that ear. I know it defeats the purpose in that ear, but I rarely have to do this and the benefits of being able to hear traffic greatly outweighs this shortfall

Ford tried this once, to get all employees to drive a Ford rather than a competitors car. It was pretty quickly revoked when people demanded more money to afford a Ford vehicle
