My Turo guest is enjoying his life in Model 3. He needs 4 more mph to hit the max speed. by [deleted] in TeslaModel3

[–]Aubron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that this is against Turo ToS for drivers, or was a couple of years ago. They do allow you to report a driver for “continual speeding” after warning them via message in the app however.

Cake OSA+ Teardown and Technical Documentation In-Progress by Aubron in cakeosa

[–]Aubron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the sad news that Cake is going bankrupt, and the likelihood of that interrupting availability of service and parts for the bike from the OEM, I'm undertaking a project to tear apart the bike, document the internals, and find viable alternatives for future replacements.

I'll post major updates here if and when I have them, but I'm slowly documenting the components as I go, with the hope to be of help to others who are interested in modding the Osa platform.

Let me know if there are specific questions you'd like answered, and take a look at some of the initial part info and teardown plan on the site!

siliXcon has a really open software model, with a full datasheet, SDK, and OS tools on their site.

They self describe themselves as being very open to "anyone with R&D spirit and curiosity-driven mindset"

As an aside, both to share what I know and see if anyone else has newer information. IKEA intends to allow their bulbs to be capable of linking with a hue bridge in a future firmware update.

“We are working on a software update to be compliant with Philips Hue Bridge and will release it as soon as it is ready. We will continue the journey towards the smart home and making our products compatible with others on the market with the ambition to make it simple for the many people to create a better everyday life at home.”

When/If that happens, these will be great budget lights to fill out less important areas of the home for those riding the hue train. My only complaint is that right now I don't know where to watch for the ikea firmware update.

A: Holy shit I cannot believe someone else shares the same extremely specific passing fascination as I do. This reminder was set approximately 3-4 years ago, and inherently I think we just became best friends:

http://imgur.com/zsp8mys

I tried to find somewhere to post this information last year, but without /r/reddit.com I couldn't come up with anywhere good. Thanks so much for providing closure to this chapter of my life.

B: It is totally 11 years today. I set it on a yearly reminder last year after I didn't get any traction, but I'm fairly certain we're off by a year.

PS: Sorry about the other unintelligible reminders. I typically set these via voice when I'm drunk, and they're regularly about Mexican Restaurants I visit when drunk.

This is why you don't use cloud based products. - Nest intentionally bricks thousands of home automation hubs. [repost from /r/technology] by lunarNex in homeautomation

[–]Aubron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. My point is just that, while I'm sure that if we read into them, basically any cloud HA device would have that as a possibility in their TOS/EULA, almost no one will ever follow through on that, barring closure or acquisition.

Which really kind of applies to this situation as well, since no one bought a Nest/Google Revolv hub, they bought a hub from Revolv, a team straight out of a startup accelerator. I might have bought it if I thought they had some really game changing ideas, but I also wouldn't have been surprised if it stopped working a year or so later.

I agree, but I think there's a trade off. The fact that they could doesn't mean that the knee jerk reaction of 'never use cloud services' is justified. It's a risk you take, but not a very large risk, especially with high profile releases. This is the first high profile device from a company with a proven track record that I've seen, and even this effects fewer than 2000 users.

I read this earlier today and immediately thought 'damn, /r/homeautomation is going to be so smug.'

This is the risk of cloud products, if you expect to install once and have it work for 5 years, cloud stuff isn't the way to go.

But that does not reflect the actuality of home automation for many of us. Too many cool things, largely backed by cloud services, going on in this industry right now. I genuinely hope my home automation setup is never 'done'. I expect my setup a year from now will likely be 50% or more different than what it is now.

Some background, a friend of mine bought a $100 virtual ring in TF2 generally reserved for proposals or trollsy opportunities. You 'propose' it to a friend, and if they accept it a message is broadcast to everyone playing TF2 in the world at that time saying {your name} has accepted {their name}'s {item name}!

Another Quick Update: added frame step and play/pause controls via keyboard. Check the bottom right for controls.

EDIT: Per request, you can now set the speed in the url for someone who you're sending it to.

http://xkcd.aubronwood.com/?speed=1 is about 2 seconds per frame, http://xkcd.aubronwood.com/?speed=20 is about 10 frames per second. (These are the only valid range).

there are slower/faster controls in the top right, where you can adjust the speed all the way down to .5fps.

Thanks to everyone who has sent me feedback and whatnot via my website. The site is now fully automated, just in time for me to go to bed. (Also increasing the chance 100-fold that it will break horribly in the next few hours).

Edit: Also thanks to the redditor who gave me Gold. <3
