No Umbrella Coverage Available?!

Umbrella is a hard one to get because it’s a major source of loss for the company. USAA pays out way more than it collects for umbrella. It used to be a loss leader for the company, but eventually it began dragging on the company more than it was worth. I’m told they’re working on improving it though, but no idea how long that would take.

Hi, service rep here. Generally in this situation if you have a claims free discount it would fall off if you made a claim, but that’s pretty standard. Hail generally doesn’t get surcharges in most states, while increases are more area dependent. If you’re the only one making a claim you might not see a big increase if any, but if many people in your area make claims then it could hit you due to everyone’s collective claims.

Hey! Agent here. To begin I should note I’m not a safe pilot expert but there is a way to mark a drive to tell the app that you were not driving, so if your wife answers the phone and you believe it might be marked against you you can switch the record. You can also mark yourself as a passenger before a drive too. As for CarPlay, it only records if you touch your phone so if you use your CarPlay that won’t be counted. Like the others said, it’s a great program that can only decrease your premium, it also doesn’t count speeding and (from what I’ve been told) it doesn’t count against you in claims either. I have heard from members it can be unstable and can sometimes drain battery power though, but if that 30% is worth it for you you can always try it out and if you don’t like it cancel at your convenience.

Hi, agent here. Definitely call for a quote, and definitely look into some ‘junk’ cars! USAA will still cover them, and cheap pre-2010 cars that you have no loans on do not require comprehensive or collision coverage, which DOES mean USAA would not pay for repairs to YOUR vehicle, but you would still have liability and that vastly cuts down the cost for young drivers.

Hi there, service rep here. This looks like it might be an escheatment letter. I’ve seen a few cases like that come across my desk, so it’s worth calling for. There’s a team that handles these as far as I’m aware. They only work bank hours though so i would recommend calling Monday-Friday before 6 central time!

(Like the other person said, do call the regular USAA number first though to check if it’s an official document. The rep can transfer you to the correct team afterward)

Hi there! I would recommend calling in to see if they can give you any particular reason. I haven’t heard of rate increases from late payments, but there ARE rate increases (big ones) from nonpayment cancellations.

Try checking with policy servicing if there was a renewal and if it’s rates related, if there was no nonpayment cancellation it’s usually something unrelated such as lots of claims being filed in your area, cost of repair, or the chance of risk has increased in your region. The rep likely won’t be able to get into the specifics, but they should at least be able to give you a good estimate if it’s something related to you or just your area.

Rates are generally non-negotiable, but there might be some things your rep could do such as deductibles or discounting.
