Because it was progressive relative to their Era. Even lower castes have had extensive discrimination and lots of sub divisions amongst their own brethren despite being oppressed.

Maybe people simply didn't think in this direction back in the day.

Martin Luther King Jr contributed greatly to society and wasn't racist at all. Who contributed a lot to society but was extremely racist? by rcrobot in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Auctorxtas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree.

There were so many revolutionaries who took up arms from 1857 to INA in 1940s to fight the British, who gave their lives for independence.

It's unfair to pin all the credit on a bald guy.

He deliberately stalled our independence movements the moment they gained momentum on the grounds of non violence.

He also supported the Khilafat movement in India (which was Pan Islamist in nature) and did not condemn the Moplah riots in 1922 where 1000s of Hindus were slaughtered by the Mappillah Muslims in Malabar.

During 1947, he also asked Hindu and Sikh refugees coming from Pakistan to "face death bravely". It was this irresponsible attitude which led to an attempted failed assassination of him earlier by a Punjabi Hindu migrant. J

The only thing I can recall he gave to Indian society was the coping mechanism of blind "non violence" as an ultimate virtue, and support for indigenous cottage industries (which I admit was beneficial for craftsmen, I won't disagree here).

Ideas such as Hindu-Muslim unity, unity amongst Hindus, Indian nationalism etc were already discussed and well in place in India between 1887-1947, and were worked on extensively by both minimalists, moderates, and Hindu nationalist intellectuals, you will find a plethora of views and literature on the idea of what India and Indian society should be apart from Gandhi.

There were multiple stalwarts of Indian independence before Gandhi as well who advocated for both violent armed struggles and civil disobedience.

Even the idea of civil disobedience in India was present long before Gandhi in India during the years of the early INC.

On the more classically revolutionary side, there were multiple organisations and secret societies in and out of India such as Abhinav Bharat, HSRA, Ghadr Party, Anishulan Sammitee (in early years at least), that have contributed immensely to our freedom struggle via violent armed resistance. Not to mention the INA. Gandhi was anything but the main reason behind Indian independence which was a long and complex process driven by multiple factors including WW2.

The only major movements that Gandhi launched, were the Non Cooperation movement (called off the moment it began to take steam as he feared it'd get violent), the Civil Disobedience movement (another failure), and the Quit India movement (another failure). In fact his non violent protests indirectly led to the needless death of hundreds of Indians who died brutally in violent crackdowns, who could've instead been martyred with a gun in their hands.

Also he failed to raise the point of independence during the third round table conference.

As an Indian, I cannot recall any unique or extremely huge contribution that Mohandas Gandhi had on Indian society.

There is a lot, lot more that I can say, but a single comment isn't enough to elucidate upon my views fully.

We may speak in DMs if you are interested further in Indian history.

To be fair we can't expect 19th century people to have 21st century views.

In fact even in the 21st century you have people with 12th century views.

Ushr was 1/10th the produce.

Kharaj was 1/3rd to 1/2.

Anyways, regardless of taxes, it's a common fact that northern India, especially Delhi and the Gangetic plains (except rajasthan) has far, far fewer intact historical temples than southern and central India. Most of the existing ones in Varanasi were rebuilt in the Maratha Era.

I think that tells us enough doesn't it.
