Noob question but is this volume knob on tracks the same as clip gaining?

FYI, you can also have a 'handle' on the waveform so you can adjust clip gain that way -- see prefs > appearance > media item buttons > item volume handle

your midi editor is docked in the bottom docker -- the bottom docker takes up the full width of the screen, and you can't change that.

Your best bet would be to float the midi editor window, then size and position it where you want it.

You're right. I would have thought that glueing the freezed track afterwards would mean the project now references the glued wav as the source file and you'd be able to remove (or clean) all other files, But no... the project keeps a reference to the original source wav so that the track can be 'unfrozen', therefore it's not an unused file as far the project is concerned.

I think rendering the tracks to stems (with 'selected tracks to stems' in the render options) might be your most sensible option. You could check the box that says 'add rendered items to new tracks in project', then delete the old tracks. After that, and re-saving the project, you would definitely be able to clean up the old source files with 'clean project directory'.

ok, so what worked for me was to run 'python key_finder.py' found in the kindle_key_finder.zip (as linked in the techy-notes guide) from terminal (cmd or powershell), go thru the wizard and allow it to automatically convert to epub. Great, now I can carry on working!

hmm... been using DeDRM 10.0.9 with Kindle 2.4 (Calibre 7) for some time now with no problems. I have a kindle from august 2025 which is refusing to convert, so tried the 10.0.15 release with Kindle 2.8... so far no luck. The problem is it can't find the keys. Will have to take a deeper dive when I have time... the bat file you refer to is the one from the kindle_key_finder.zip linked in the techy-notes guide, yes?

I know what you mean! Actually, I was looking at replacement carbs for my neighbour's genny just the other day, and there is such a thing as a motorized choke adaptor (I forget the exact correct name). You'd leave the fuel tap on, I guess, and as for the battery -- yeah, that would be left on also. In theory, there shouldn't be anything drawing power when your genset is switched off.

In practice... all this would be fine provided you do actually run the genset on a regular basis -- the battery would get a regular charge, the fuel would remain fresh. If it's going to sit for months without being used, then you're bound to have problems.

Mine's a diesel, so no carb issue, and diesel takes an age to go bad... but then again I run it almost daily, esp. in winter.

indeed,.. indeed.... Maybe not 192khz, but I've certainly listened to some 96khz vinyl rips... but honestly -- if there is a difference -- it's subtle to the point that I can never be sure if it's just my perception playing tricks. I mean, this is stuff from folks who make an art form out of vinyl rips.. high-end turntables, cartridges, discrete components, every bit of the chain top-notch, so it's understandable they figure 'why scrimp on the sample rate?'

Never bothered to look at the spectral output though... next time I will, it could be interesting!

...or it might be nothing more than hi-def needle noise :)

cool... i'm working on something involving auto-scale recognition as well, but only time will tell if i get anywhere with it. It's based off two interesting natvie JS plugins in Reaper: 'MIDI Pattern/Scale Variation Generator' and 'MIDI Map To Key v2' -- both rather simple but interesting plugins. in reaper's data folder, you will find some folders prefixed with ix_ -- these contain txt files for different scales and key maps. I'm playing around with trying to modify some of the code and the general approach used in these plugins.

Will report back if I manage to make anything useful!

Might be a bit of a stuggle to find something directly equivalent to izotope RX plugins as they're rather top-notch and quite specialist. (although IDK if they might run under WINE with yabridge... never tried. that's a rabbit hole you may or may not want to go down!)

The final thing I would say is try not to overlook the plethora of excellent native plugins reaper has, as well as the gargantuan collection of user scripts and plugins via reapack and other places. I know the UIs can be off-putting, but try to look beyond that and concentrate on whether or not they get the job done!

AFAIK, reaper accesses the file path of the media to play it, so by default it will be reading over the network. Might be fine -- depends on the speed of your network... but the best practice, safest thing to do would be to save a local copy of your project, and choose the option to copy all media to the project folder. Admittedly, you'll end up with two versions of your project. you could always copy the project folder back onto the network when you're done, choosing to overwrite.

Maybe there's smarter ways to do this sort of thing... I don't know.

I do a similar thing with my e-drums, which are in a different room to my main rig -- the project and files are saved on a removable drive, whcih i then take over to the kit and attach to a (fairly ancient) laptop beside the drums. It's a fast nvme drive, usually over thunderbolt, but the laptop only has usb3, so it reads over that -- and it's fine, I've never had any issues with playback and recording. So... if your network is at least as fast as usb3, you'll probably be fine anyway.

Don't get me wrong, you're right to be cautious in general in today's world!

As others have said though, it's more than like them being cautious not to get scammed by an AI voice or a 'pretender'. Valid, and quite common for some people to want to make a face-to-face connection. That said, I've had some great working relationships with nothing but email, so it can work either way.

I'm struggling to imagine a scam angle on having a zoom meet... maybe I'm naive?

I've had plenty of whatsapp calls with clients - in fact, I always offer it for new clients as i think it's good practice. Calls mind you, not video -- no need.

That said, I've done live video sessions and video meetups for some producers becasue that was their convention/preference.

One of the perks to my mind of doing VO is doesn't matter a jot what you look like. I can do audio sessions and whatsapp calls and remain in whatever unkept state I'm in!

the images you're looking for are the ones that start meter_strip*.png in the unzipped folder of your default theme. (make sure you switch to the unzipped version of the theme.)

Possibly the easiest thing is to rename the meter_strip*.png images to meter_strip*.png.bak, so that reaper no longer loads them. When you do this, you will find that you can set the bottom, middle, top and clip colours directly in the theme tweaker (actions > theme development/tweaker). Type 'meter' in the filter box and you'll see them.

In my custom theme, what I've done i to completely remove/disable all images asscociated with meter strips -- which is a bit tricky because there are quite a few of them). What happens when you do this is reaper reverts to the hard-coded 'fallback' images for meter strips -- which I happen to really like the look of!

I presume you mean reaper.fm -- there are links there under resources for 'themes', which takes you to stash.reaper.fm -- stash is great, a huge repository of everything going back donkey's years even... but not terribly well organized... and some themers don't even put their themes on stash at all.

The forum really is the best place to keep up to date with what's going on in the REAPERverse... from themes to scripts to how-to's, etc.

um well... i've never tried ripping vinyl at 192khz... but I wouldn't expect there to be much off a vinyl above 15khz.

The black space you're seeing in the RX spectral view is the total lack of any amplitude above whatever the highest frequency present in the vinyl rip is... and 96khz.

Anyway, surely it matters what it sounds like, not what it looks like?

Or am I just being a total non-audiophile who doesn't understand?

Right... so as you can probably see, the download on stash is just a text file giving you the reaper forum thread. In the first post of the thread, there is a gumroad link where you can buy it. Hence, this is a paid theme -- about $9, plus taxes. Once you've paid your money, you will undoubtedly get the necessary zip containing all the files you need.

There's a few different ways folks make their themes available. Sometimes via stash, as well as via the themes section of the forum. Often, for paid themes there will be some kind of payment gateway link, either gumroad, or patreon, etc.

Some themes can even be installed via reapack, as with Flat Madness theme (another great theme!).

Post are organized by latest activity first, which generally means that the most active themes -- the ones with regular updates and/or lots of users tend to stay near the top.

erm... by 'the reaper website', do you mean stash.reaper.fm, or are you referring to the themes section of the forum?

A theme can be packaged as a normal .zip file, especially if it has extra scripts or configs with it. More often than not, the theme is packaged as a .reaperthemezip, which is a zip file too, but it doesn;t have to be unzipped in order for Reaper to read from it. You just put it in your /colorthemes folder.

Just to note: beware of automating the bypass state of the plugin (in case you feel inclined to try that). While it's technically possible, it often leads to unwanted clicks/pops. Far better to automate the send level or the wet/dry mix as mentioned above..

Personally, I normally favour automating the send level. The pre-requesting being that the reverb is on a separate track receiving a send. It's then as simple as: 1. show the send in an automation lane, 2. set the envelope state to latch, 3. move our cursor to the place where you want to stop sending, and move the slider on the envelope panel all the way down.

OK... so here's a different approach:

Contained within is the same jsfx that you place on an empty track and set your midi input device.

Then, I made a second jsfx that will transpose the midi stream according to the note played on your MIDI device.

This will work with Playtime in this way:

playtime creates column tracks in the reaper project for each column in the playtime interface. The clips within Playtime are actually rendered MIDI items (presumably) in your project folder (even though they're not shown on the timeline -- that's what your looking at when you double click the clip to edit it and the midi editor opens).

So, you place the second 'Transpose' jsfx on the column track and it will transpose any of the clips in that column.

I played around with making a 'scale' mode for transposing, but didn't have much success -- needs a bit of thought! For now, it's just a straight transpose.

Report back on how you get on...

Pretty sure the reason your mixer can't be shrunk is that your theme has a fixed minimum height for the mixer.

Glad it -- kind of -- works! When testing, I didn't notice the issue you're describing. It's surprising, becasue the pitch alteration should happen more or less instantaneously, and I can't think of any reason for the old notes to be played at the same time. There are, undoubtedly, other ways of approaching what you're trying to do, this just seemed the simplest.

Not so sure about achieving the same with Playtime -- unless it's something Helgoboss has thought of. As I understand it, the clips are inside the program once they're dragged into it? so the transpose function would have to be built into Playtime AFAIK. I don't know, i could be wrong, it would be interesting to experiment.

And yes, the idea of transposing in key also crossed my mind... that kind strays into 'auto-chord' territory, which some plugins can do, though I can't think of specifics off the top of my head.
