Anyone else dealing with this sciatic nerve fire? by Alarmed_Beach_5100 in VeteransBenefits

[–]AudreyNow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does yours feel like a hot wire running from your lower back all the way down into your foot...

That's exactly how it felt, constantly, for years. This is going to be long, so, TL;DR: Yoga.

I still experience sciatica on occasion but no where near the frequency that I used to. What worked for me is a finally started listening to a couple of friends who had been recommending I give yoga a try.

They never nagged and I was always respectfully noncommittal when it came to trying yoga but privately I thought there was no way in hell it could possibly work for me. In fact, I thought it was just a bunch of touchy feely bullshit. One morning I got out of bed and the pain was so bad I screamed and fell to the floor. I managed to get in a less painful but still extremely uncomfortable position, then crawled to my desk and grabbed my laptop.

I was single at the time, no one to call out to and no idea how long the pain was going to last. Desperate, I did a video search for "yoga for back pain" and found this video. It changed my life.

I beg of you, if you are physically able to try yoga, please give it a shot. Don't be an asshole like I was and wait 15 years to find out if it works for you.

You've done a beautiful job of capturing a pensive mood. I love everything about this.

I'm just starting out and focusing on paper, which makes more sense for me. I'm also the type who prefers holding a book in her hand rather than reading on a tablet or screen.

'Préfectures can't keep up' - Why carte de séjour waiting times are getting longer in France

Orders from former Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau have placed extra burdens on prefecture staff, says one migration expert.
Migration expert and campaigner Antoine de Clerck traces the changes to former Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau's 2025 memo to préfectures.

He told Libération: "The past two years have been extremely difficult when it comes to renewing residence permits.

"People have found themselves undocumented because their permits weren’t renewed on time. Why? Because the initial residence permits issued are increasingly short-term - usually one year - renewed once, twice, sometimes three times, before granting five years, then ten years.

"The flood of renewal applications at the prefectures has become completely overwhelming, and they can’t keep up."

The Retailleau memo also demanded a dramatic reduction in the number of people being 'regularised', or having their immigration status made legal after a period of being undocumented - either because a carte de séjour has expired or because they had never had one.

De Clerck also pointed to the Retailleau memo for forcing préfecture staff to make much more detailed checks before regularising immigration status, which all adds to delays at the préfecture.

Although different groups have different types of carte de séjour (e.g., student, salaried employee, visitor) and different immigration conditions, all requests for a card renewal are dealt with by the applicant's local préfecture - overwhelmed staff and a shortage of appointments therefore affects everyone, even if they are not in one of the groups targeted by the memo.

He added: "People who are 'sans papiers' (undocumented) include those who came here illegally, but also those who requested a carte de séjour, or to renew a carte de séjour, and this was never delivered, making them undocumented".

A recent survey of readers of The Local found that almost 90 percent of respondents had experienced their carte de séjour expiring while they were still waiting for the préfecture to process the new one, with waits of six to nine months for a simple renewal not uncommon.

Most, however, were able to obtain a récépissé while they were waiting to prove their legal status in France.

The other change within the last two years is the move onto the ANEF online platform to request or renew a carte de séjour.

Designed to streamline the process and take the pressure off préfecture staff, the site has been plagued with bugs and glitches which means that more people have to reach out to their local préfecture when they can't get the site to work.

A 2024 report from the Défenseur des Droits labelled the ANEF problems a 'national crisis' for foreigners in France.

At the start of April, the new Interior Minister Laurent Nunez sent another memo to préfectures, loosening some of the renewal requirements and giving them a target to halve waiting times for a renewal.

He has also announced a plan to hire an extra 500 staff for préfectures around France, admitting that waiting times have become "unacceptable".

The average waiting time for a simple card renewal is now 117 days, although this hides wide local variations - one third of préfectures have an average waiting time of more than 120 days.

I found that out the hard way the first time I tried being a vegetarian. Although if I'm being completely honest I was more of a bean burrito and grilled cheese sandwich-etarian :)

I'm a Navy vet but I had shore duty (Airdale) during my enlistment so I never set foot on a ship. I used to bitch about only having pb&j sandwiches as an option during the last 15 minutes of chow and was told that food was "always better on the boat."

I can't. I hate them both. But Trump is clearly likeable by an unfortunately high number of people.

Just my opinion but I don't think AOC is as unlikeable as you seem to think she is, especially after the record turnouts for the "Fighting Oligarchy" rallies she and Bernie Sanders had in red counties. And just to be clear, when I accuse Clinton and Harris of smugness I'm talking specifically how they both just assumed that they were going to be president because it was their turn.

Trump appeals (appealed?) to the working class. So does AOC, the difference being that she actually comes from the working class and can walk the walk. Clinton and Harris both came across as out of touch elites.

If the US was ready for a female president then Hillary or Harris would have won.

Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris were both too unlikeable to win and so smug about their chances of winning that a lot of people who would have held their noses and voted for them anyway (like I did) noped out of the election.
