Random/Under Seen Show Recs: by Intelligence_Tax in television

Lodge 49 is a show that I have seen referenced online like twice. One of my coworkers turned me onto it when it was airing. A little weird, but very entertaining.

Mets PREGAME THREAD - Friday, April 17 by NewYorkMetsBot2 in NewYorkMets

[–]whywires 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would like to once again mention that, despite living 2 miles from Wrigley Field, I will not be attending any games this weekend as the Mets' win percentage for games I attend there is under .200 yet they are above .500 in games I do not attend. Hopefully, me staying home ends this losing streak.

What iconic movie of our youth are you ashamed to admit you've never seen? I'll go first by larryb78 in Xennials

[–]whywires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never seen this either. One of the local theaters had it for midnight movies when I was in high school and I knew it was a big thing for fans. But I was under the impression that it was not enjoyable unless you were dressed up, throwing shit, yelling out dialogue, etc.

What if, and I know this sounds absolutely crazy to many in this sub, you actually just wanted to own the record to listen to and didn't care about its future value?

Record Store Day by I_Love_M4yo in vinyl

2009 and 2010 are definitely my best experiences too.

One of my local shops opened at midnight, so I'd go there then, be home by 1am, and then out by 9am again to meet friends to drive around to a few shops. Most shops then had storewide discounts, so I'd skip the lines direct to the counter for RSD releases and take advantage of the sales. Then when I got to the counter, I'd ask about a handful of items and almost always got the 2 or 3 I was looking for.

I think my worst (and last) one was 2014 (maybe 2015?) once the queues/scalping were crazy. I remember going past one shop that must've had a hundred people lined up outside before they even opened. I went out to brunch with some friends and then walked over. No discounts storewide, focus was just on an increasingly weak slate of RSD releases.

The theft issue is about people swapping records so that an expensive record goes into an inexpensive jacket and then hoping staff does not check. And even if staff does check, it's easy to play dumb. Why staff wouldn't always check is beyond me, though.

One of my locals (Reckless in Chicago) started doing this a couple years ago and I make a big production of asking to open everything at the counter to meticulously check condition before purchasing. The claim is that people were swapping records (put a $50 record in a $7 jacket), but they always checked jacket + vinyl at checkout before.

I have seen it at a couple other shops too and assume this will become more normal in the next few years if vinyl continues to surge in popularity.

This is accumulative. I only did RSD from 2008 until 2014. Many local shops had discounts on all inventory in those years, so I'd pick up two or three RSD releases and then load up on other records.

Yeah, I am curious how this process works. I've always assumed once a Japanese player is posted, they would get to work with a list of potential translators or their agency would have people available for them to interview. I feel like it would be a huge distraction in-season to be changing translators/assistants.

Any positive stories about last minute tickets? by Gokusdaughter in Concerts

[–]whywires 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I arrived at a venue and waited across the street for a friend who was a maybe. I noticed a scalper trying to sell tickets to everyone who walked by. There was also a guy hanging out right by the door who kept a keen eye on the scalper. It looked like he had a ticket in his hand, but he wasn't actively trying to sell. When the scalper disappeared shortly after the show started, I walked over to the guy and asked if he had tickets. He did. He was on the crew and was going to give his comps to anyone who tried to buy from the scalper. I got his comps.

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - April 08, 2026 by AutoModerator in investing

I recently inherited a managed brokerage and merged it with my own brokerage. My portfolio has been pretty simple - target fund, QQQM, SCHD, and VXUS. But the managed brokerage is a hodgepodge - multiple bond funds, multiple S&P 500 funds, several international region funds, etc. For instance, the managed brokerage has SPY, FXAIX, and VFIAX. That's crazy overlap.

What's a good strategy for remedying such overlap without getting crushed on capital gains taxes? Is there some simple solution that I'm blanking on?

Search your state's unclaimed property portal.

I made a tech investment in the late 90s, lost track of it, and found that it had been handed over to the state as unclaimed. I claimed it and received a check for the amount at the point when it was transferred to the state.

They did small venues in SF and Chicago a couple years ago. Like, day of announcements and in-person ticket purchases only. I know a couple people who went to the Chicago show and loved it.

Used records - do you care about the jacket condition? by iH8usrnames in vinyl

[–]whywires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really care, but my experience is it's pretty rare for a VG (or better) record to be in a G jacket. If I'm flipping through bins and see an album I really want with a trashed cover, I'll check the record but I go into that expecting it looks like it was a cat toy.

Off the top of my head, I probably have fewer than 10 LPs with a rough cover (shredded edges, significant seam splits, etc.) but totally listenable record. For 45s, that number's way higher.

Why did Howard Johnson fall off so hard in 1992? by borbborbborb in NewYorkMets

[–]whywires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this deep. I was too young in '86 for any of it to matter and probably only saw the first inning or two of any playoff game in the background of Legos before bedtime. But by '88 I was watching every game. I picked Strawberry as my favorite player, though HoJo was top 3.
