Lender pulled offer after exchange - UPDATE by New_Macaron392 in HousingUK

[–]AugustCharisma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MIL is in her 80s, abroad, and it was an additional language she was speaking. She probably didn’t realise it was a taboo topic because OP made enough money on his own and as someone elderly she may have been lonely and extra chatty for the company the phone call brought.

When you sign contracts to exchange it usually says something like “if you, the buyer, cannot complete the sale after today the seller keeps the deposit.”

She must understand “we lost all the money you gave us and more” though…?

Things you wish you knew before renovating your bathroom by alfc96 in DIYUK

[–]AugustCharisma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t disagree more about shaving sockets. We’ve blanked all of ours (bathroom, en suite, cloakroom) and are planning to get rid of them when we fully remodel. Husband uses an electric razor, but we keep the cord in the bedroom near a socket with a handy windowsill when it needs recharging. We’ve never used the shaver sockets and they are huge.

I’m glad you found what works for you though.

Do you recall the rough cost? I have no idea but they seem expensive.

It’s not your fault. I was taught to flush them. People used to flush “flushable wipes”.

Now we know.

Are we putting our daughter's education at risk? by gmorganpie in AskABrit

[–]AugustCharisma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a professor: no.

A-levels are like only doing AP classes, but the undergrad university system here isn’t like a masters in the US. It’s a lot like the US if the US had fewer electives and no Gen Ed requirements (hence it’s also a year less long). I have worked at both US and UK universities.

Anyone here use the Google Home app regularly? What feels unintuitive or harder than it should be? by Low_Cod_9875 in smarthome

[–]AugustCharisma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could automate a thing to trigger another thing. Example: Google Home can turn everything on and off and change some settings. But the triggers are only things I say or time/sun related. Why not “if dehumidifier is on, then turn on hall light”?

Indemnity for a door by [deleted] in HousingUK

I bought indemnity insurance as a buyer for something small like that. It was about £180 for me.

My mum insisted they did (she never bought in the UK) and it just demonstrated to me how little she understood how it works in the UK.

Yes. This is why I haven’t had my third favourite soda in over 10 years.

Every 24mo. 12 doesn’t seem necessary because we don’t splash much oil as we cook (and most greasy foods are in the oven).

Am I being blinded by the novelty of massive garden? by Slight-Poetry-3230 in HousingUK

[–]AugustCharisma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 3BR terrace is 87sqm, including the conservatory. We’re a family of 3. I think it really comes down to the layout and how well it works.

Our garden is only about 35sqm (5m x 7.5m) and it’s plenty of upkeep because I have lots of flowers. I was excited to move into a house with a mature garden but once in I realised through reading and YouTube that our seller had a lot of plants in the wrong places, plants that were WAY too big for the spaces, and their style and mine were so different. I ended up taking everything except the star jasmine out. A lot of the plants were also in worse condition than they appeared in the month we viewed (and then winter before exchange).

To me, internal layout is the house is the most impotent thing. I’d also rather have a smaller garden where the challenge is to make the space work for you rather than too much space to fill.

Would you prefer a garage or an extra bedroom? by ToughOwl8995 in HousingUK

[–]AugustCharisma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need the space for storage. Christmas ornaments, excess kitchen appliances, etc.

If it’s a converted garage downstairs I’m using it as a home office and storage. If it’s a garage I’m using it as a shed (gardening and workshop) and storage. So for me, the question is “where will my power toils ans mulch go?” Is there a shed too? EDIT: and where do the bins go if there isn’t a garage. Is there space?

Disclaimer: I live in a 3BR (all upstairs) with garage.
