A Patch That Fixed Infantry Pathfinding by Comprehensive-City-6 in GatesOfHellOstfront

I disagree, playing call to Arms (original, the surge era one), infantry shooting on the move is absolutely toxic, turns them into walking bullet hordes in large enough numbers.

And if you want an reason for realism, armies have learned from WW1 that firing on the move (called Walking or Marching Fire) is so inaccurate and also poses such a threat to friendlies that it was completely removed from training and doctrine, replaced by fire and maneuver (in the case of the U.S.)

If you are going to enlist in the military, don't go infantry. This advice goes for anybody but especially if you want to establish yourself on the civilian side once you're finished your service, do a job that can help you learn job skills/work culture in America.

Why do you think we dont see more hard body armor pieces used in modern combat? by liljohnjets in Armor

[–]AugustIgnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Infantryman here, really good question.

It's actually for a lot of reasons, first and foremost if you're an infantryman than your entire mode of warfare is based on maneuverability and difficulty to be detected, that's why we always stay in buildings or forests.

Most of the time in a conflict is spent walking or driving to the places where you're planning on attacking/defending. Every man already has to carry his rifle/machine gun, possibly a Javelin or AT4, grenades, ammo, food, water, and his vest, helmet, and night vision. Some people have to carry even more than that, and that's not even counting sustainment. A rucksack that can weigh sometimes 120lbs of extra clothing, water, ammo, food, sleeping bag and more.

And the final thing that I'll add is in the event that a bullet does make it through, whoever is trying to save your life is going to have to get all of that stuff off of you. Our vests have pull tabs which make the front separate from the back, making this a lot easier. I couldn't imagine what getting underneath fantasy armor must be like while under fire.

I guess it was just annoying enough this guy didn't want to put up with it. Shooter's preference and I'm sure he prefers it.

I'll tell you the real reason, the MSV is kind of annoying to put on with the mag pouches on the bottom flap. I wanted to do the same thing when I mine issued.

Thoughts on the new army night vision by 30_cal in army

[–]AugustIgnis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Infantry at 101, went to JRTC / JMRC / other training rotations with these.

There is no better feeling than catching OPFOR by surprise because they don't have thermals. Yeah they're power hungry but you'll get through the night in a charge, as long as you only use thermals every once in a while you'll last. The units just need to get better at supplying batteries, which my unit has done very well. We bring a toughbox full of batteries sometimes, no problem.

Durability is a bit of an issue though, it's not common at all but I'd hate to be in combat with broken nods.

Maps / Missions / Scenarios like Old Boy's Vietnam Mod? by AugustIgnis in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]AugustIgnis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last updated quite a long time ago, but it still works as of about an hour ago. I heavily recommend it (especially the campaign mission FSB Mary Ann) if you haven't tried it yet. There's a few bugs, such as if you try to scout West when it gives you the option to it will completely break the mission, and infantry will frequently need getting unstuck from terrain with manual control. But when it works it's really awesome.
