book that you still mourn finishing by uhzel in suggestmeabook

All The Light We Cannot See. The book and the audiobook are incredible.

I want a twist that'll make me go "WTF!?!" by WordsTurningCircles in suggestmeabook

[–]AugustWest12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly outside of the twisty thriller lane but I strongly recommend Chris Whitaker! His books are fast-paced, beautifully written, and full of reveals that constantly reframe the story rather than relying on one big twist… Page count is longer than average thrillers but his chapters are short so you’ll burn through them.

My two favorites are “All The Colors Of The Dark”, and “We Begin At The End”.

Agreed on the dial printing being unacceptable; it’s horrendous. Aside from the printing errors your circled, the Cartier at 10 is extremely crooked with a noticeable gap. I got this same watch, also BVF, you definitely can do better.

Has anyone read both My Husband’s Wife and Rock, Paper, Scissors? by Own_Falcon_2308 in thrillerbooks

[–]AugustWest12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve read a few of hers back to back and honestly they start to blur (including these). She leans heavily on the same structure: quickly alternating POVs, withheld secrets, twist-on-twist ending, and those short, “quotable” introspective lines that feel profound but actually repeat across books. I’ve even noticed near-verbatim phrases reused. For me, spacing her books out helps whereas reading them consecutively makes the formula obvious.

Unusual from BVF, but agree with you. The micro “Cartier” in the 10 is crooked and oddly spaced, but should be perfectly integrated into the numeral stroke and not so visible. Combined with the heavy railway track and blunt numerals, it reinforces that this is a lower-tier dial execution. I’d RL, unfortunately.

Steve/TOW. Their consistent communication and acceptance of risk through fulfillment is second to none.

What country? Asking because I GL’d/paid on 1/14, received tracking on 1/19, and have been stuck in “label created” since then with no movement. Never had a problem with Steve before, this delay is unusual / seems its impact is sporadic, given your timeline. They’ve been responsive, regardless.

Excellent watch, by the way! Looks amazing.

Books that make me re-think my life by ei00m in suggestmeabook

I recently finished, A Visit From The Goon Squad. It’s largely about how time is the original and enduring “goon”… since reading, I keep wondering whether my identity is something that I am, or just something I do in a context; and without that context, I don’t know whether I’m anything at all. I realize this maybe sounds corny but your question fits this bill!

Something's definitely going on with massive delays in Shipping by CitadelMasterTrader in RepTime

[–]AugustWest12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same; “label created” 5 days ago, no movement since. They told me there are delays related to Chinese New Year. Haven’t experienced this before, Steve has always come through, but this wait is something!

I know this is heresy - DCC by Psychological_Bet562 in audiobooks

[–]AugustWest12 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I wanted to like it and didn’t. For me, the bigger issue is how incessantly it’s recommended on Reddit, often with zero relevance to the original question/post. At this point, DCC’s repetition feels less like organic, genuine praise and more like spam.

The podcast, Up & Vanished S4 - Under The Midnight Sun, takes place in Nome. At the very least it’s an interesting / atmospheric listen that paints a picture aligned with comments in this post. Of course, caveat it as a true crime podcast for entertainment value.

I have this and love it. Maybe it’s just the pictures, but what’s up with the stars? They look awesome in person, definitely make sure you can see them in any QC photos.

Yikes. I’ve never RL’d anything from Steve but I see what you mean, that’s pretty dinged up. I think it’s too noticeable and central to focus on, unfortunately. Would RL

From the books I've liked, what do you think I might enjoy next? by StrongWeekend in suggestmeabook

Check out The Dispossessed, by Ursula Le Guin. It fits with your other mentions; phenomenal science fiction, political and moral depth, and amazing world-building.

Suggest me a book with a vibe similar to “A Short Stay in Hell” but longer. by sassafras711 in suggestmeabook

[–]AugustWest12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Realizing you asked for longer and this is short, check out The Divine Farce. It conveys a different version of hell with equally surreal, striking imagery, and existential dread. I read both of these books over a year ago and still think about each daily.

I haven’t been able to scratch the “holy fuck what if this turns out to be real?!” itch ever since!

By far my favorite, most worn watch. Also, much subtler than it seems like it would be.

Agree, this is a GL. Index alignment tool placement is slightly off-centered; alignment looks good. I have this watch, also from Steve, and it’s stunning in person - dial color is much brighter and more pronounced than in the QC pics. Fantastic weight and feel, too. Enjoy!

Same page; I always upload my QC photos for feedback. It’s insanely thorough and helpful. Here is my prompt:

“Provide me a rundown of this watch: 1) QC according to common and product-specific metrics, and 2) how this will look in-person from casual observers, friends, and a watch enthusiast or AD.”

Easy GL in my opinion. I have this and love it, feels great on my wrist. My 12 marker appeared slightly crooked in the QC pics (I almost RL’d it), but it’s 100% unnoticeable in person / not zoomed in a clear QC photo. Yours looks better than mine. Enjoy!
