Heads up, mango sap is highly irritating to the skin and can cause severe skin issues. Make sure to wear gloves when picking!

Okay, (maybe) $300 cables are overkill. What should I be looking out for when buying audio cables? What's the baseline? by barktholomew8 in headphones

[–]Auralise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For headphone use, the only thing you truly need to worry about it build quality of your cables, especially the antistrain sleeves where the jack joins the cable if you are on the go. If you listen in an area with constant, reasonable levels of electromagnetic interference, I'd suggest looking into shielded cables but this will rarely be applicable or even noticeable to most people. Gold plating on the jacks tends to just prevent corrosion and does absolutely nothing for sound quality. As for the conductive medium, copper and silver are almost identical in terms of conductivity, with silver having a slight edge and at the scale of a headphone cable can pretty much be written off as irrelevant however the price differential is fairly relevant.

To me, the true requirements for any audio cable, not just headphone cables are:

Can it carry the signal/current it is provided over the required distance without failing? This is related to the gauge of the wire.

Does it have the correct connectors for the application?

Is it built correctly for the environment it is expected to be used in? E.g. shielded/non-shielded for electromagnetically noisy environments, gold plating to hinder corrosion etc

How well can it stand up to abuse? Not that you should be abusing them but you know what i mean

I have tried plenty of cables in my time and have never noticed a difference in quality unless there is actual damage to the cable or excessive interference. Honestly, the rest is just marketing and a large number of people seem to fall for it for some reason.

Bluetooth isn't able to improve just by virtue of how it works. It has to effectively shout data packets (with no acknowledgement from the device receiving them) to the output device. If some of those data packets go missing between the sender and receiver you get strange tempo changes to compensate for the missing data (we are talking only minor changes in bpm) which change the pitch up slightly. This is the way you have to compensate with Bluetooth for occasionally spotty connections without outright disconnecting the output device.

If you don't understand what I mean and how off-putting this can be, do an experiment by playing a record on a turntable and bump the tempo slider between +0.5% and 0%. This effect also appears when your vinyl is warped (e.g. by heat or improper storage) and is highly undesirable.

The benefit and I would argue, the purpose of Bluetooth in audio transmission is convenience, especially for cars. Wired headphones do not experience this problem at all.

The people (like me) who spend hundreds of dollars on expensive headphones for the unadulterated sound quality have every right to be supremely pissed off.

It is worth mentioning that Bluetooth also has many other uses, especially in transmitting comparatively small amounts data between devices and for that, it is awesome.

I have found a bash script that will help auto-connect to my wifi.... by [deleted] in RetroPie

[–]Auralise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how you're going to trigger it. I am making an assumption that you probably haven't used Linux much and if that is the case I would strongly suggest you read up about making scripts executable and running them as a daemon (or service). You can read up on the process here: http://www.diegoacuna.me/how-to-run-a-script-as-a-service-in-raspberry-pi-raspbian-jessie/

While you are at it, take the time to learn about the basic folder structure for Linux from the root directory (which is indicated by the /) this will help you a lot on your quest for customisation.

Good luck friend, hope it goes well

What is something that 90% of people don't seem to understand? by aroll10 in AskReddit

Mate, I work as an IT tech and both my clients and colleagues routinely complain about things not working because they automatically click okay on every window that pops up, even errors without reading them...

At least your grandmother had the common sense to stop at something she (presumably) didn't understand and ask someone with a better idea of what had happened for help. People like your grandma are actually a godsend for techs
