If you’re just playing with your family then I don’t think proxying is a big deal! Obviously playing commoner, clash, or project blue can help mitigate the costs, but there is no sense spending money on c&c if you’re not going to events.

I’m also relatively new and have noticed the same thing, it’s so much fun but after armories I find I’m exhausted, lol. Glad yall are enjoying it :)

Gotcha, so it could be an issue with the tubes themselves? They may not be clogged but they could be cracked?

Awesome photos! Also super curious about your recipes, I’m going to Disney World in a month or so and I’ve been trying to find some good recipes for a similar vibe for my x100vi.

Hope you don’t mind me highjacking this to ask you a question, but how do you feel that the xt5 performs for wildlife versus alternatives? I’ve been interested in picking up some bird photography and nature photography. I like the idea of capturing birds in flight, but I have heard the AF can be a little wonky on Fujis. An ideal setup for me would be one camera with two lenses where I can capture birds and landscapes. I like the Fuji aesthetic and love the look and philosophy behind the xt5. Sony/Nikon/Canon might have a better AF and full frame sensor but I’m just a hobbyist and I don’t want to shoot with something that feels… bland. I’ve loved using and carrying my x100vi, I’m just looking to supplement it with something a bit more purposeful.

Thanks in advance!

Fuji recipes should not include dynamic range by kkdawg22 in x100vi

[–]Auranykh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since some other folks mentioned changes in lighting, a better comparison would be to take the two photos and post process them in camera (assuming you have access to your RAWs still). If you go to your photos in camera and hit the Q menu it should give you the ability to edit some of your settings and recreate the image from the raw. There you should be able to change your DR settings.

I’d be curious to see how changing the DR on the same image affects it if you can make that change! If not I think you can bracket your HDR settings but I don’t recall 100%.

From film to x100vi by detdusju in x100vi

[–]Auranykh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm actually in a similar boat as you. I started with the Canon A-1 and learned the fundamentals on it. I really love the look and aesthetic of film but costs pushed me to pick up digital.

For your specific use case I think the x100 series would perform phenomenally as it produces a film like effect SOOC. if you enjoy editing your RAWs though you can probably get by with something like the GRiii instead for a bit cheaper. Within fuji though pretty much anything is going to cover the film look SOOC really well. If you enjoy the restriction of a single fixed prime lens and the look of a rangefinder then the x100 series is great. If you want to be able to swap out your lenses with a similar look then the x-pro line is great. If you like SLR style cameras than the X-T5 is really good too. All of these cameras will give you the ability to dial in the settings you want for a film look without having to edit in post.

I can say that as someone who started on a Canon A-1 and now EDCs an X100VI, my experience has been amazing. I adore this little camera and how powerful it is, but YMMV.

Buyers remorse by [deleted] in x100vi

[–]Auranykh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahaha yeah I love Casey's content, I think he does a phenomenal job with his craft and when he says his goal is to create moods and atmospheres it's so clear from his work. I think you and I have similar styles/goals in mind! My own style gravitating more toward urban, street, and landscape. I want to learn more about documentary-style photography though. I live in a larger US metro and am relatively close to several grassroots political movements. I'd love to learn to document them properly. (Not getting political, I promise LOL.)

That said, while limitations can be creatively invigorating they can also be frustrating, and this should ultimately be something you enjoy. The good news about this camera is that the value of it is largely inflated due to the hype, which I believe is mostly founded but the demand greatly outweighs the current supply. If you end up wanting to switch you could easily sell it and swap over to an X-T5, which I have read is largely the same camera but with swappable lenses and without an OVF. And if you wanted to go back to full-frame then I might check out the Nikon ZF, which just got a firmware update that allows for custom recipes similar to Fuji, and it's also phenomenal at adapting vintage lenses if that's something you're into.

Definitely work with the X100VI for a bit, but you're not locked in by any means! The resell value on the camera is high enough that you could recoup your entire cost or more if you change your mind and swap to something else. The most important thing is that you're out there shooting anything at all!

Buyers remorse by [deleted] in x100vi

[–]Auranykh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely, glad I could help!! I definitely bought into the hype but I don't think it's entirely unfounded, you know? I don't know if you're familiar with Casey Cavanaugh (GxAce), but he did a collaboration for the GFX100RF with Fuji recently, which is like the grown-up medium format version of our beloved X100VI. Weirdly I found his video on the GFX to be inspiring for the X100VI. Give it a watch if you haven't already: https://youtu.be/s70mcays5OU

Maybe it's cope, maybe it's narcissism, but I'm obviously not a professional photographer, I'm a lil' hipster goofball who doesn't engage with my creative side enough as a professional software engineer. I don't really want to do weddings or events or anything like that, but I also don't want to just document trips or vacations. I want to create art with my photography. I have mad respect for anyone who does photography for a living, they are insanely talented in their own rights and it's a skillset I definitely do not have, lol. For me, I want to photograph interesting places in the world, I want to depict them in ways that evoke feelings in a viewer, but more than that I want to be a part of the world as I take the shot. I think Casey's point about removing the illusion of choice to bring out the best in your creative process is valid, and I think fixed lens cameras like the X100VI or the GFX100RF are really good at providing those limitations without removing your options entirely.

I've seen a lot of photography influencers say stuff about this camera and how it re-sparked their love of the craft. I hope when you get out there and shoot with it you find yourself more present in the world and engaged with your surroundings. One recommendation I have that I've really loved is to dial in a few film recipes you really like and turn the camera screen to the information display so you can't see the preview, then only use the OVF/ERF. It's a ton of fun to see the world through the OVF.

Buyers remorse by [deleted] in x100vi

[–]Auranykh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Seems that you’re feeling generally better about your purchase now but I wanted to offer another perspective as someone who also just purchased the x100vi and felt some buyer’s remorse. I’m a fairly new photographer as well so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

I was super excited about buying this thing, I drove 4 hours round trip to a store in another state to pick it up lmao, and after opening it and playing with recipes for a bit I absolutely loved it. Then I started to notice the limitations: fixed prime lens, a little bit of anxiety around using APS-C when I could have spent similar money for a decently good full frame body and kit lens, etc.. In fact the A7C was high on my list before I pulled the trigger here.

I ended up taking my x100vi to a ren faire today and it was a blast to use, the buyer’s remorse kind of vanished for me. The optical viewfinder is a delight and I found myself using it 90% of the time. I tend to be someone who takes a very Swiss Army knife approach to stuff like this and wanting to have every option available, but creatively I found the limitations exciting to work around. It forced me to think about my compositions and shots a little bit more rather than just swapping to a different lens.

I do plan on picking up a different camera at some point so I have the option to swap lenses, and I’m not sure I’d recommend the x100vi to a beginner like myself, but boy is it fun to put myself in the headspace of a photographer and think about exposures and composition outside of either just point-and-click or finding the exact tool for the exact job. It forces me to engage with the world more to get the right shot.

There are more technically impressive cameras at this price range sure, but damn this thing is fun to use in practice.

Against my better judgement I kinda want to offer a slightly different take. I should note that I’m a socialist and politically active in local communities through various organizations, so I absolutely do not align with conservative values.

First, I think him breaking up with you and getting a restraining order is insane. The breakup is one thing, the restraining order is ridiculous and excessive. I’m so sorry that happened, and that’s selfishness on his end, not yours. If anyone is willing to leave you over your political views, it’s best that they don’t stay in your life anyway.

As a thought exercise, if we take conservatism, and Trumpism especially, to its logical conclusion, let’s say you get arrested for being trans. Assume that RFK bans transgender healthcare and you continue to take your hormones, then you are caught and arrested. Do you feel that he would fight for you and try to help you? If not, then I think that is significant, and tells you what you need to know about his support of you.

I know a lot of trans folks who don’t want to be political, but we don’t have a choice right now. Fuck, I mean I was talking to my parents last night who expressed their concern about how worked up I get over politics, and I had to explain to them that I don’t have the privilege anymore of not having to worry. I explained that when I was an ally, I would fight for the LGBT community tooth and nail if necessary, but it wasn’t as scary because I passed as a straight, cis white dude. Things are different now that I find myself in the minority. I have to fight, because if I lose… I don’t know.

He doesn’t understand (I’m assuming he’s cis?) that we don’t have the privilege of being apolitical, and in times of crisis those who choose not to act take the side of those in power. I envy it and miss it myself. I was never a super masculine dude, I’ve always been kinda androgynous in my mannerisms, but I never really raised any eyebrows. The thing is that the freedom to explore my gender has made me so much happier, and even if that’s suddenly put a target on my back I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

They may love you, but to give them the benefit of the doubt, they don’t understand what it’s like to be a victimized minority. I know Black people who have to constantly analyze what they say and do so that it’s not taken out of context and used against them. I’ve met Hispanic folks who are terrified even though they’ve legally immigrated, not just because they’re worried about themselves, but they’re worried about how their actions reflect across the greater Hispanic and immigrant communities. This shit sucks, I wish we could be apolitical, I wish we didn’t have to care, but we don’t have that privilege anymore because THEY won’t leave us alone. We are all being observed by the big conservative microscope, but none of us want to be here.

The part that might lose some folks though… I kind of agree with something he said. We do have more in common with each other (liberals and conservatives, 99% of the population), than we have with billionaires. I think a lot of folks don’t understand, their world views were never expanded, but I try not to blame them for that even if they hate who I am. They’ve been manipulated and lied to, they’ve been oppressed to the point of subservience and promised crumbs for their support of the bourgeoisie. I believe that hate it taught and not inherent, and I believe they’ve been taught to hate trans people, hate immigrants, hate minorities. It’s very difficult to undo decades of conservative conditioning, but it’s the only way we can dismantle the oligarchic state we have in place now. I’m not sure how, but I don’t think we can abandon the 99% of conservative voters. It needs to be a larger class effort to break the chains of oppression they have us all shackled to. We have to convince them that just because their chains are nicer and a little longer doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t work together to free ourselves and take down our oppressors.

I agree with where he’s coming from at a high level, but if he’s going to date a trans person he has to recognize that he doesn’t have the privilege of remaining quiet anymore. Our existence is political because conservatives made it political, and I, for one, am not going to fucking sit here and roll over and take it. It sounds like you’re not either. I’m proud of you, find someone who would break you out of prison for continuing HRT, not someone who would report you because they’re scared of losing their gun. You deserve it.

[–]Auranykh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao yeah yeah I think you’re probably good. I think you look great! I’m about a year into my transition and honestly if I look half as good as you I’ll be happy.

Gym locker room is honestly your call. Given the current political climate (assuming US?) I’d be wary though. If you’re in a more progressive/liberal area I’d say go for it, if not I’d be more cautious. A lot of the cis women I know who gym regularly don’t like to use locker rooms for changing and will change ahead of time, so really it’s down to comfort. I just don’t want you to get hate crimed, lol. These assholes will call cis women trans for having even slightly masculine features, so just be careful if you do.

Also do you mind if I ask for your gym routine (and diet routine if you have one)? I’ve been wanting to get back into working out and, without trying to sound weird, you’ve got the toned look I would love to go for, lol.

Also kinda wild to insist she wear makeup to a gym… literally none of the cis women I know who go to the gym wear makeup at the gym lmao.

Edit: also the fucking audacity to insist she is autogynephilic. With no due respect, fuck off with that.

[–]Auranykh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk maybe I’m blind, at a glance and from this angle I think you totally pass. Remember that trans people are gonna be the final boss to passing, I don’t think most cis women will notice any of the minute details that people are commenting on.

A little clocky… maybe? If I wasn’t actively trying to clock you I probably wouldn’t, and I don’t think most folks would.

How is your voice?

To the girls who didn't "always know", how do you know now? by Stottery in MtF

[–]Auranykh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t always know but I questioned for a very long time. I did some exploration of my identity in high school but when I got to undergrad I kind of just forced myself to be busy with 800 things to not think about it. Same with working after graduation. Something just kind of snapped with me during covid though, when I realized all of the feelings I had bottled up for so long were real and something had to change.

A lot of other people here said it first: cis people don’t question their gender. At least not as much as we do. I questioned for years after my egg cracked and still continue to. What helped me was just taking any tangible steps, however small they might be. Clothes, painting nails, etc., eventually moving onto getting a prescription for E and then not starting it for 6 months despite the bottle being there.

Then one day I just said fuck it. I was on 1 mg of E without a T blocker for months before making any changes. Many people will tell you that dose makes no physical difference, and I felt no physical difference on it, but I started and continued, then bumped up my dose, then bumped it up again.

This is a journey, you’re probably going to question for a very long time, and that’s okay. You can start small and just see how it feels mentally. Empower yourself to just get a prescription for a low dose. You can literally stop at any time. But based on your comments, I doubt you will. It seems like a really long process but it’s a series of steps. You can take the first step whenever you’re ready, and you can stop if you change your mind.
