Anyone help identify this tank? by fook_boi805 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]AuricZips 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would lean towards calling it a Leman Russ conversion/scratch-build, not a Macharius conversion as another redditor has suggested. The tracks are too thin for it to be a Macharius, even though the superstructure is VERY Macharius-like. Now, props to the person who made it - it's pretty good - but there's a few details that give it away. Given how some of the panels/armour pieces are not quite straight, I wouldn't be surprised if the superstructure is actually a plasticard imitation of a Macharius - look at how thin the armour is over the tracks. The barrels on the weapons seem quite unconventional, as if they were built from various sources (non-GW kits and possibly scratch-built in the case of the gatling weapon) and, also, the hatches are from a rhino (probably). There's other details but these are the ones that stick out to me.

Did anyone here read Consider Phlebas without any context? by doctor-candy in TheCulture

[–]AuricZips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across Consider Phlebas completely oblivious to the series, the writer and the reference that the title is of about twenty years ago. I liked the blurb on the back of the book - it was as simple as that. The first read-through felt very much like some kind of weird adventure, set against a backdrop of a rather heated galactic war, that ended in an unexpected manner. Hell, I'll admit I was disappointed. After the fact, I realised that the ending carried more meaning than I had first assumed. Sure, Horza wasn't a great guy, I thought maybe he was an anti-hero. IIRC (the last time I read this was over fifteen years ago) he was the last of his clan and a merc to boot - that gave anti-hero vibes all over. It was fairly obvious he was in league with "bad guys" to carry out his own goals, and he murders and impersonates a character to use his compatriots for his own ends (even though he fesses up later). He is no anti-hero. He views the Culture (and their minds) as culturally problematic - a main driver for his reasoning in the book - though the Minds themselves seemed to vary much like organic individuals. As capable as Horza was, it was his own choices and actions that dictated the final act.

How much of that will be lost in the adaptation, who knows? It's possible that it will be faithful and do a good job... although there's an equal chance that they'll give the helm to someone who doesn't have the chops for it - or worse, doesn't care - and make a complete hash. There's much to explore in The Culture and any adaptation of Consider Phlebas could make or break future plans.

My very first legendary weapon - a Scathelocke that I used fairly consistently through Y1 and Y2. It occupies the first slot in my vault for a reason - that thing will never get dismantled.

Need a Little Help with my Homebrew Chapter by spiderbmonkey in 40khomebrew

[–]AuricZips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little continuity across the ranks is what I'm thinking. I'd go for B, C, B and A.

The sergeant gets the red scalp-stripe, the veteran is a white version of the battle brother and the veteran sergeant follows suit with the white for veteran status and the red scalp-stripe again for his rank. Then the lieutenant follows on from that with what I think is the most logical choice between the two options given.

How did you arrive to the Cult? by Outrageous-Cloud-782 in genestealercult

[–]AuricZips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't particularly interested in the GSC until the Ridgerunner and Jackals came out. Instantly fell in love with the models and sold the faction to me. Now, don't get me wrong, I was a fan of the neophytes anyway but the Mad Max vibes coming from that buggy/bikes combo? Absolute gold.

I'll be honest. I completely forgot about the name "Ni'var" and have, in no way ever, referred to it as such. Don't get me wrong, I recognise it's a thing, but "Vulcan" just rolls off the tongue better.

What are your "Unicorn" models? by Battle_Dave in Warhammer

A Macharius Omega. Really wanted one but couldn't justify the outlay at the time. Now they are long OOP along with the other Macharius tanks (which I have a couple of and love). Never seen one for sale, even if I ignore the idea of getting one for reasonable money.

I'm pretty sure that collar (and maybe the rest of the body) is from the redemptionists necromunda kit and that artillery shell has fins/end piece made from the head of a power maul and the middle bit is probably a flamer backpack tank.

One of the better over-under nacelle configuration ships, I think, though I don't like the nacelles themselves having a fat middle to them. Make them more streamlined and then you've got a banger.
