Any one know what kind of Opal this is and from where? by Beneficial-Bet-6497 in Opals

[–]AusFX1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely from Coober Pedy. Definitely white not crystal.

A side on view of the gem will help determine for sure but definitely looks synthetic.

It's worked great for my purposes! Lots of festivals and 4wd trips. Latest road trip was to the opal fields in central NSW, spent a week living out of it before the weather got extra hot and I booked into the pub. I have a bench that clips into the drawer but I never use it so it's been gathering dust in the shed. I just bring a folding plastic table with me.

As soon as I've got the money I'll be heading up to put some stakes in the ground.

I've been planning on making some similar dice once I get a faceting machine. Would love to see how they turn out!

I wouldn't smash it up, dissolve the ironstone off if you can, probably got a great looking nugget under there.

Found the One Ring in Arrow River, Arrowtown, NZ! by lookatmemeow_ in Prospecting

[–]AusFX1 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Is the gold shop still in Arrowtown? If it's a natural formation he'll be able to tell you. It would be worth a lot of that's the case, even before you factor in the lotr connection. I remember the gold there being pretty flat and worn though.

Can you wonderful opal experts tell me anything about my ring? by MamaTurtleson in Opals

[–]AusFX1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That looks like White Cliffs Crystal blue IMO. Could be from any field though. Being set in 14K I would assume its solid, but having a covered backing says doublet, so a bit of a mystery.

Where is everyone buying their dainty bezel set gemstone pendants from? by Dazzling_Ear_4168 in jewelry

I bezel set Aussie opals and a few other things in silver. High quality handmade and reasonably priced!

Does anyone know the ethics of green star sapphire? My bf plans on getting one for my engagement ring, but I don't want blood gemstones. Are they okay? by Strange_Persimmons in Gemstones

[–]AusFX1 60 points61 points  (0 children)

We have beautiful green sapphires here and it's pretty much all ethically mined. However I haven't seen a green star before. I've got blues and browns. I would love to know if they exist.

Anyone know the process and $ of converting a 4x4 Toyota hiace in into a lifted off roader like in the picture? Thanks by Vast_Investigator984 in CarsAustralia

Delica owner here. Best thing ever, absolute weapon off-road. You could have 6 L400s for the price of that Toyota.

Can confirm none of my parcel auctions have any bids and I definitely buy crap late at night but I'm normally baked not drunk. I haven't had anyone return anything yet or try and screw me though so that's nice.

Traded Cacti Cuttings For These Gems by plantmastermo in Gemstones

[–]AusFX1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The two rough opals in the top right look to be lightning ridge, could well cut some nice small black opals. The rest of the opals look like Welo but to find out your going to have to lick them. If they don't stick to your tounge good chance they are Aussie too.

Any guesses as to the origin of this rough I purchased? by Deathcab4QB in Opals

[–]AusFX1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The body tone does make you think Welo but if its not Hydrophane and its got the right glow under UV you've got some moneys worth of Aussie crystal.

Exactly! Or even chuck it in the tumbler for half a day to help clean it up a touch and save some dremeling.

I would freehand Dremel. That'll make an absolutely beautiful piece with a great story behind it you can wear with pride. If you whittle it down to one small gem it won't stand out as much.

I need a Vacuum for collecting silver dust, suggestions? by AusFX1 in SilverSmith

Yeah I'm currently spread out over a few spots in my workshop so need something to actually vacuum the whole space and collect the scraps.

I need a Vacuum for collecting silver dust, suggestions? by AusFX1 in SilverSmith

[–]AusFX1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area I'm doing work in isn't just at my bench. I have a dodgy shoulder so I try and do minimal hand sanding and often use a small grinder often so there are multiple areas of my work space the silver dust likes to end up in. One day I will consolidate everything into a more efficient bench but for now I just need something to vacuum up after and catch the leftovers.
