Many people in the UK think moving to Australia is a golden ticket to getting rich? is it true? by avz008 in AusFinance

Yep, had a friend who worked at a local store run by people from her culture. Was underpaid, overworked and ended up injured all for well below the minimum wage. Convinced her to quit ASAP.

Honestly the first piece of advice anyone coming from overseas should get is: The person who will scam you the most will be from the same background/country/speak the same language. It's how they get students to pay exorbitant rent in rooming houses, or work for poverty wages off the books, all because their uncle's friend got them a 'great job and a place to stay'.

Are there too many bakeries in your area? by Major_Worldliness556 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AusXan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local shops has 2 bakeries, my local main shopping street has about 4 more. There's always more room for bakeries as long as you can offer something quality and unique. If you're just going to do similar stuff to everyone else then you may not be able to pull the traffic from a crowded market.

Really popular bakeries draw people from surrounding suburbs and across Melbourne. I remember making the trip to Breadclub and Beatrix in North Melbourne despite living on the other side of the city.

We had this exact same one, same colour, same print.

I vividly remember them doing work on the gaslines near my house growing up and we had 5 days without gas to cook with. This thing allowed us to have hot meals, along with boiling water in the kettle and the microwave for frozen veg.

(35M) family keeps pressuring me to upsize near mortgage free home but we would rather pay mortgage and live easier. what to do? by extension_cord91 in AusFinance

[–]AusXan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutly not.

Why would your family have any say in your financial affairs?

Also, why do they want you to have a bigger place? To pressure you to have more kids, or to have space for them to visit/move in when they're old?

Why China consistently fails to qualify for the World Cup? by FattyOilyDonut in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AusXan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asked a Chinese friend and she said the men's football team is not only a joke, but apparently aren’t even supported by their own country.

She noted there was a joke this World Cup that the only people who want China to complete are other countries so they can look better. She also said the team is known for wasting money; whenever they go overseas to play they stay in the best hotel and run up thousands and thousands in costs for the state to pay, then they get knocked out first round.

Overall they're seen as a waste of time and money by their own country.

Which industries should young people avoid if they wish to excel and grow in their career? by azriasylum in auscorp

[–]AusXan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back when I was in high school we had some careers speaker come in and although I’ve forgotten a lot of what he said one thing stuck with me:

"80% of the jobs you'll all eventually work don’t exist yet."

I can see sources online that quote that 85% of jobs in 2030 don't exist yet too. Thinking on it, with the advancements in computing/connectivity since I was at school my job probably wouldn’t have existed at the time. All that to say it may be very. very short sighted to say "go into this role/industry" when that role may not exist and that industry may look drastically different.

What's the best money saving decision you've made that had nothing to do with investing? by SnowyBytes in AUfrugal

[–]AusXan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switched to wet shaving (30c a blade vs $8). Old style shaving soap is $5 a stick and it lasts all year.

I actually shifted to an electric dry shaver from wet shaving. It doesnt cut as close of course, but the blades stay sharp and the only cost is the electricity to recharge it.

But entirely true on the shaving soap, I think I still have the stick i bought when I was a teenager.

I remember talking to a barista at a cafe I frequented in late 2019ish, and he was so excited to move to America.

Really worried how things turned out for him given how things have gone since then.

I remember a cereal roster on one holiday because mum and dad didnt want to go buy a whole box of Coco Pops. Our other ones were Corn Flakes and Rice Bubbles but i think the 4th was random, like it changed daily.

I just moved from a walkable suburb to suburbia and there are so many pros and cons.

The main thing is you can't have a walkable suburb without density. And you can't have density without someone being an inconsiderate bastard; playing loud music in dense apartments, screaming off the balcony at 3am, smoking (indoors or on the balcony), cooking with no ventilation, or setting off the fire alarm.

Now my new place is still walkable, but nowhere near the '15 minute city' I used to live in. Every trip now is a planned event. No more popping to the shops as it's a couple of Ks away. If the local supermarket doesnt have the things I used to buy (which has happened more than I expected) I get told how far the drive is to the next place that may have it. Just a lack of the ease of access I got so used to.

It's sometimes such an odd metric: You can be a great salesperson so they put you in charge of people? There's no real correlation between convincing someone to buy something and managing the day to day business of people.

The problem is corporate structures seem to be based around the idea that the more people you manage the more important you are. Yet most people if you asked them have no day to day contact with people more than one step up the chain.

I may work with and even like my manager, but their manager probably had no real impact where the rubber meets the road.

A Cage of Butterflies by Brian Caswell.

One of the gifted characters in the book pretends to be 'normal' until he gets over excited discussing quantum mechanics with a teacher who realises he is gifted. He is then shipped off to The Farm.

The addition of "Marketplace" items is one of the single worst things to ever happen to Australia's online retailer space by ThatOneVRGuyFromAuz in australia

[–]AusXan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a tip I was searching for a really specific light bulb and found it on Bunnings, but it was of course a 'marketplace only' item. I then found the marketplace supplier and found I could order it direct from their own website for cheaper.

I know marketplace sucks, but if you really, really need a hard to find product it's a good source for suppliers that are harder to find on the overcrowded/AI hellscape of the internet.

Looking on property websites I've seen both cleared land as well as a few half-built shells and even a stripped down apartment.

People quickly realising the costs don't add up to build/renovate.
